FG Captures Kuje Jailbreak Masterminds, Top Ansaru Leaders Linked to Al-Qaeda
The Federal Government has announced the arrest of two senior commanders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), an Al-Qaeda-linked terror group operating in Nigeria, following a months-long intelligence-driven crackdown.
The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, revealed this on Saturday during a media briefing at the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja.
According to Ribadu, the special operation, carried out between May and July 2025, was a collaborative effort involving security and intelligence agencies.
The arrested suspects are Mahmud Muhammad Usman, popularly known as Abu Bara’a, Abbas, or Mukhtar, identified as the self-proclaimed Emir of Ansaru, and his deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, also called Mallam Mamuda.
Ribadu disclosed that Abu Bara coordinated terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and orchestrated high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies to fund insurgency.
He further explained that Mamuda, Abu Bara’s deputy and leader of the “Mahmudawa” cell, operated in and around Kainji National Park, which stretches across Niger and Kwara States into the Benin Republic. Investigations also revealed that Mamuda received combat training in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under foreign jihadist instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specialising in weapons handling and IED production.
“The targeted counter-terrorism operation, executed over two months, led to the capture of two notorious Ansaru leaders who have been behind several terrorist attacks in Nigeria for years.
The first suspect, Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar), is the coordinator of multiple sleeper cells nationwide and the mastermind of numerous high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies used to finance terrorism.
The second suspect, Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda), is Abu Bara’s chief aide and head of the ‘Mahmudawa’ cell. He previously underwent advanced jihadist training in Libya and specialises in handling sophisticated weapons and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).”
