As a business owner, it’s pretty understandable that you’d want to know how the public perceives your brand and how much your content resonates with your target audience.

Social media metrics are simply a measure of your marketing efforts or campaigns (adverts). Doing this will provide insight into how a particular marketing strategy is helping your overall business objectives.

Below are the metrics to take note of:

✨Audience growth: It’s the speed at which your social media pages gain new followers within a certain period of time. For instance, say I started my business page with 500 followers and my followers increased by 50 in the first 2 weeks. Likewise, I had 100 new followers in the third and fourth weeks that followed. That can translate to x2 of my audience size using a 2-week interval.

✨Video views: The number of people who see your video

✨Reach Reach is the number of people that see your content. If your non-followers have the highest percentage of reach than your followers, that means you are doing something right.

✨Engagement: A measure of the likes, saves, comments, and reactions your content gets.

✨Impressions: The number of times your content was displayed on a feed or social media.

One of the many fatal mistakes you can make when starting a business is improper planning. I understand that bringing your business idea to life, into something solid and non-abstract is not an easy task, but that alone isn’t enough.

This is why you need to have a thorough understanding of the following:

✨Invest in Branding: Branding goes beyond coming up with a name for your business. Branding is the process of creating a unique identity for your business and this includes but is not limited to having a logo, brand color, brand tone of voice, mission and vision statement, your product value, and even how you price your products. All these should be solidly defined before starting your business.

✨Conduct Market Research: You need to know if what you intend to bring into the market is sellable and if yes, at what length are people willing to buy. Doing this will give you a more profound understanding of how your audience thinks and how best you can serve their needs.

✨Go with an Evolving Mindset: As a business owner, you definitely wish for your brand to thrive successfully, yes? Having this ingrained in your mind gives room for flexibility and prevents stagnation i.e. your business adapts as the market dynamics change.

For your marketing strategy to be effective, you need to set a defined goal. What exactly do you intend to achieve with a particular strategy? Having a distinct goal ranges from wanting to increase your brand engagement or brand awareness to directing more people to visit your website.

Never muddle up the purpose of your marketing strategy. For instance, putting out content with the hope of an increase in brand awareness, making more sales, and generating leads (acquiring your customers’ information). Doing this could make it difficult to accurately measure your marketing efforts.

1) The first step to creating your content pillar strategy is to know your target audience. A target audience is simply a specific set of people your product or service is meant for. This first step is essential to take note of, so as to maximize your efforts.

2) After knowing who your audience might be, you need to know what their difficulties are. Only then will you know how best you can serve their needs.

3) An insight into your audience's challenges would make this third step easier. Now that you know the likely solutions they’ll seek, your content pillars will be just about that. Ideally, 3-5 content topics are advisable to work with, although, there is no set rule about the number.

4) Use compelling titles for your pillar content; titles that will have your audience on the hook in just a single glance.

5) Create valuable content. Your content can only influence your audience if it has whatever they are looking for. Always ensure you give value to them and in return, you get to earn their trust.

Content pillars, also known as content buckets are set of themes or topics that your content will be centered around. Having content pillars enables you to post with intention and direction.

For instance, a reference to my introductory post (you can check it out for better understanding if you haven’t) revealed my intention to enlighten/educate my audience about Digital Marketing skills.

But of course, there are several fields to shed light upon, on Digital marketing. So, I decided to go with just four segments which are Content Marketing, Social Media Management, Social Media Advertising, and Search Engine Optimization. While these are my Content Pillars, my key theme is Education. This implies that every content I put out will be about either of the topics I listed.

Also, do note that your content pillars are likely to change as your business/brand evolves but ensure that they are specific to your brand i.e. If you are into skincare/beauty products, you have no business with posting about fabrics or any other non-related topics.

“Brand voice is the unique personality a brand exhibits throughout all communications.”

Just as you communicate with your friends and family, there is a specific way you communicate with your customers.

I’d like you to think of your brand as a person, what personality trait would you like to ascribe to them? Would you like the person, but in this context, your brand, to be optimistic, strict, or courageous?

Think of your brand as an emotion, what mood would you like to leave your customers in? Would you like to leave them inspired, motivated, passionate, relaxed, or refreshed? Because at the end of the day, it is less about what you say but about how you say it.

If you have chosen your brand voice to be fun or inspiring, you must be consistent with either. Staying consistent with a particular brand voice helps improve how easily your target audience tends to recognize you amidst several pools of options.

There’s this line from a song, sung by a popular Nigerian artist; “There’s a man for every woman, a woman for every man”. Likewise, there is a specific group of people for your business.

Your products or services are not and cannot be for everyone. Therefore, it is mandatory for you, as a business owner, to seek information as to who those people are.

You might want to dig a little deeper by knowing some personal information such as what’s important to them, their worries, motivations, challenges, dreams, etc.

This approach will not only help you understand them better but will ensure that you continually provide solutions to whatever their worries might be.

Also, your content and whatever you sell or offer will always be customer-centric i.e. you’ll always put your customers’ needs first and this will foster a long-term relationship with them.

I bet you’ve been to Google to make a search today, right? And it’s most likely you found whatever it was you were seeking on the first 2 pages, yeah?

The fact that you were able to get it on those first few pages doesn’t mean others do not contain the information you needed but going beyond seems like too much stress.

Aside from the website that has "sponsored" displayed over them, the only cause for those websites to be at the forefront is because they followed the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) principles by adhering to Google’s algorithm.

SEO is the process of optimizing a website’s content; using certain keywords to increase it’s visibility on Google. Google then uses its search engine bots to scan the page based on a particular keyword.

Investing in SEO content is not only for website content but your daily social media content. This enables potential customers to see your page whenever they put in a particular keyword.

A keyword is a word that is common to your niche, that people type in the search box when looking for the business that you do.
