Kwara Police Arrest 4 Suspected Robbers, Recover Stolen Motorcycle, Hunt Gang Leader

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested four suspected robbers and recovered a stolen motorcycle following a violent attack on two commuters along the Ali Weree Camp axis of Ifelodun Local Government Area.

According to Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, Public Relations Officer Kwara State Police Command, the incident occurred on 4th June 2026 at about 8:00pm when two commuters returning from a market were attacked by a group of armed men wielding sticks and cutlasses.

The assailants inflicted injuries on the victims and forcefully dispossessed them of their motorcycle before fleeing the scene.

She added that upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Command immediately launched a coordinated operation in collaboration with personnel of the National Forest Security Service operating within the area. The operation led to the recovery of the stolen motorcycle and the arrest of four suspects identified as Umaru Haruna, Habibu Kale, Kire Yelwa, and Iliyasu Gambo.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects acted in concert during the commission of the crime. The statement further revealed that one Sumo, identified as the leader of the criminal gang and believed to be in possession of the group’s weapons, remains at large.

The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, CP Ojo Adekimi commended the swift response and collaboration between the Police and the National Forest Security Service which led to the successful recovery of the stolen motorcycle and arrest of the suspects.

Investigation is ongoing, while efforts to apprehend the fleeing gang leader and recover the group’s weapons have been intensified. The arrested suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Baruten Raid: Kwara VCRU Arrests 3 Suspects, Recovers Weapons, Dismantles Bandit Network

Kwara State Police Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) has arrested suspected bandits, recovered assault weapons, and apprehended a suspected facilitator linked to a criminal network operating in Baruten Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued by Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Police Command, on Tuesday, credible intelligence led operatives of the VCRU, in close collaboration with personnel of the Okuta Divisional Police Headquarters, to conduct a tactical raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Okuta, Baruten LGA, on 6th June 2026. The operation led to the arrest of Bello Mohammed, 28, and Abubakar Mohammed, 25.

A search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, 65 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, two cutlasses, two tube tyres allegedly used in restraining victims, firearm servicing materials, criminal charms, a dagger, one mobile phone, and a power bank.

Preliminary investigation linked the suspects to a criminal network allegedly involved in kidnapping, armed attacks, and other violent crimes within the Baruten axis and adjoining communities. During interrogation, Abubakar Mohammed confessed to his involvement in the group’s activities and disclosed that he had previously sustained injuries during an encounter with security operatives, resulting in the loss of three fingers.

Further exploitation of intelligence generated during the investigation led to the arrest of one Umoru Saliu, 58, on 7th June 2026. Investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly provided accommodation and an enabling environment for members of the criminal network, including its leaders and other gang members who are currently at large.

Flooding Forces Residents to Abandon Homes in Abata Onikeke, Ilorin West LG, as Community Raises Alarm Over Decades of Neglect

Residents of Abata Onikeke in Oju Ekun/Sarumi Ward of Ilorin West have raised concerns over persistent flooding and erosion that has continued to threaten lives, destroy property, and force families to abandon their ancestral homes whenever it rains.

An on-the-spot investigation and community, reveal that the area becomes severely flooded during rainfall, leaving residents with no choice but to flee for safety.

Many houses are reportedly submerged or rendered inaccessible, while roads and access paths are cut off by rising water levels.

Several residents who spoke to Just Event Online Community Report team described the situation as a long-standing environmental challenge that has lasted for decades without any lasting intervention from relevant authorities.

According to them, repeated communal efforts to manage the situation have proven ineffective due to the absence of proper drainage infrastructure, which they say is the root cause of the recurring flooding and erosion.

“Our community is gradually becoming deserted because of persistent flooding. Whenever it rains, everyone runs for their lives,” a resident lamented.

Another community member alleged that despite several written appeals and letters sent to government authorities over the years, no meaningful response or intervention has been received.

“We have written several letters to the government, but there has been no response to our plight. We now abandon our homes whenever rainfall begins,” the source added.

The residents expressed concern that the continued neglect of the area is putting lives at serious risk, particularly during the rainy season, when flooding becomes more severe and unpredictable.

They called on relevant government agencies to urgently intervene by constructing proper drainage systems and implementing long-term erosion control measures to prevent further displacement and loss of property.

Community leaders warned that without immediate action, the area risks further environmental degradation, increased property loss, and possible permanent displacement of residents from their ancestral homes.

Kwara SWAN partners KTM foundation to deliver free medical outreach for members

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria(SWAN), Kwara State Chapter under the leadership of Ayodeji Ismail has sealed a partnership with Khadijat Toyin Musah (KTM) Foundation to organise a one-day free medical outreach for members of the association.

The medical outreach is scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 12, 2026 at the Taiwo Awoniyi Sports Media Centre, Kwara SWAN secretariat at George Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin beginning from 9am prompt.

Speaking on the development, Kwara SWAN Chairman described it as a watershed in the history of the association, noting that it will improve the health and wellbeing of the sports media professionals.

Ayodeji stated that the medical outreach is in line with the WSID-Four point agenda of the current administration which includes welfare, training and oppurtunity for members, stakeholders engagement, innovation and creativity and transformational and inclusive leadership.

"This medical outreach is a watershed in the history of our association and we are very delighted its happening at this period", stated the Chairman.

He explained that the need for the medical outreach has become imperative given the work loads and editorial targets placed on each journalists and its impact on their well being.

The Chairman said "Media professionals often forget to prioritise their health status as they seek to meet deadlines and beat editorial targets-so, this medical outreach will provide them a unique oppurtunity to know the states of their health in respect to the demands of their work"

While stressing that prevention is better than cure, Ayodeji noted that the outreach will also help media professionals to better avoid activities that are inimical to their health through the medical check-ups and advices from the medical professionals.

The Chairman however urged all the members of the association to seize the oppurtunity and be part of the exercise, noting that health is wealth.

The outreach is expected to cover several medical screenings including, blood pressure checks, blood sugar level testing, weight and height measurement to ascertain the body mass index, vision and hearing screenings with lifestyle and health discussions also to be delivered amongst other deliverables.

In her own reaction, the founder of KTM foundation, Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah, who is a Pioneer Professor of Nursing Science at the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa, descibed the partnership as groundbreaking and visionary.

The Ilorin-born distinguished scholar who is also a strong promoter of cycling and former north central representative on the board of cycling federation of Nigeria stated that sports media professionals play an integral role in the development of sports,hence the need for them to be medically fit.

It is what we are known for and our team of medical professionals are also ready to deliver the best during the course of the programme" said the Professor Musah who also formerly Chaired Women and grassroots development committee of the cycling federation of Nigeria.

BREAKING: Gunmen Abduct Teacher on Obbo-Ile–Eruku Road in Kwara

A primary school teacher, identified as Shina Adeoye, has been abducted by suspected terrorists along the Obbo-Ile–Eruku Road in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, deepening concerns over the worsening security situation in the area.

The victim, a teacher at Cooperative Primary School, Eruku, was kidnapped on Thursday morning while travelling between Obbo-Ile and Eruku.

According to eyewitness accounts, the teacher was intercepted by armed men before he could get to his school.

A resident of Eruku, who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, described the incident as another troubling sign of growing insecurity around the Obbo-Ile–Eruku axis.

“We woke up to the shocking news that Mr Adeoye had been kidnapped on his way to Eruku. He is a teacher and a well-known member of the community. Everybody is worried because nobody knows where they have taken him,” the source said.

The community member lamented what he described as the near absence of security personnel on the route despite repeated complaints by residents.

This road has become very dangerous. People travel with fear because there is hardly any visible security presence along the axis. We have raised concerns several times, but nothing seems to have changed,” the resident said.

He told newsmen that residents were becoming increasingly vulnerable to attacks by armed groups operating in the area.

“Those using the Obbo-Ile–Eruku Road are no longer safe. Criminals appear to be taking advantage of the security gaps on the road. We are appealing to the government and security agencies to act before the situation gets worse,” he said.

Another source added, “This is a teacher whose only crime was travelling to work. If teachers, farmers and ordinary residents can no longer move freely, then our communities are under serious threat.”

In November 2025, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed that suspected terrorists attacked Eruku community, killing at least two people and injuring another.

One of the targets was a parish of the Christ Apostolic Church, where a worshipper, identified as Mr Aderemi, was shot dead. Another victim, Mr Tunde Asaba Ajayi, was later found dead in the bush.

Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said officers from the Eruku Division, working with local vigilantes, responded to gunshots from the outskirts of the town, forcing the attackers to flee into the bush.

The command described the incident as an attempted bandit attack.

Residents of the affected community lament the absence of security operatives in the area. Many said attacks and abductions have become frequent, yet there is little visible presence of police or other security agencies to prevent them.

Local sources say panic has spread among teachers and parents, with fears that the incident could disrupt schooling in the community.

Security agencies in the state are yet to release an official statement on the abduction or ongoing rescue efforts.

The attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of North Central Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom have targeted commuters, farmers, and public workers.

Residents are calling on the Kwara State Government and security agencies to urgently deploy personnel to protect lives and ensure safe movement for citizens.

PEBEC, Kwara Govt Hold Technical Reform Workshop to Improve Business Environment

The Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), in collaboration with the Kwara State Ease of Doing Business Council, has convened the 2026 Nationwide Subnational Engagement and Technical Reform Workshop in Ilorin as part of efforts to strengthen business-friendly reforms and promote economic growth.

The workshop, held at the Ilorin Innovation Hub in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), brought together government officials, market leaders, community representatives, artisans, and small-scale business owners to discuss strategies for improving the ease of doing business at the subnational level.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the event, the Commissioner for Finance in Kwara State, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, reaffirmed the state government's commitment to creating an efficient, transparent, and investment-friendly environment capable of attracting businesses and stimulating economic development.

She stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between public institutions and the private sector in driving reforms that support enterprise growth and enhance investor confidence.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Raheem Malik, underscored the role of institutional efficiency and inter-agency collaboration in achieving sustainable development and improving service delivery across the state.

Representing the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, Prosper Praise reiterated the Council's commitment to advancing reforms across states, noting that partnerships with subnational governments remain critical to eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks, enhancing transparency, and creating a conducive environment for businesses.

The Director of Legal and Compliance, Shehu Mogaji Abdullahi, who represented the Chairman of the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, also reaffirmed the agency's support for initiatives aimed at strengthening revenue administration, improving compliance systems, and facilitating business operations in the state.

Participants at the workshop engaged in technical sessions and discussions on regulatory reforms, governance processes, and practical measures to improve the operating environment for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that the reforms being championed by PEBEC and state governments would contribute to economic expansion, improve public sector efficiency, and create greater opportunities for entrepreneurs at the grassroots level.
