The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has warned of a possible strike in Sokoto State-owned tertiary institutions over worsening welfare conditions, calling for urgent government intervention to avert disruption of academic activities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, ASUU branches at Sokoto State University and Shehu Shagari University of Education said their members have endured prolonged neglect despite repeated appeals to authorities.
The statement, jointly signed by ASUU-SSU Chairperson, Dr Bello Musa, and his counterpart at SSUE, Dr Shamsu Kabiru, noted that unresolved welfare issues are already straining industrial harmony and could soon disrupt teaching and research if left unaddressed.
“These issues have lingered for too long despite several reminders. Addressing them will sustain the harmonious working relationship and enhance productivity,” the union said.

As reported cases of cancer increase across Nigeria, a food scientist in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Idara Emmanuel Okon, has cautioned against consuming random food and drinks, noting that eating unwholesome items can lead to the disease.
Speaking at the 2026 graduation ceremony of Batch ‘A’ Students of IDYJAY Kitchen Culinary School in Uyo, over the weekend, Mrs Okon said cancer related ailments in the country are mostly caused and worsened by random eating of bad food and drinks.
“I am urging Nigerians and indeed the general public to try as much as possible not to eat food randomly, even water because what you take in will either make or destroy you.
“Increased incidences of cancer issues, such as cancer of the head, cancer of the lung, cancer of the eyes, etc, that are being reported in the hospitals are simply because of what you take into your system.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a suit filed against the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) and two others, challenging the proposed allocation of four oil fields.
The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/2678/2025, files by Hi-Rev Oil Limited and Hi-Rev Exploration and Production Ltd, listed the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) along with the Petroleum Minister as defendants.
Ruling on Monday, Justice Emeka Nwite, upheld the preliminary objections filed by the defendants and held that the suit was incompetent.
Justice Nwite further held that the plaintiffs failed to serve the defendants with a valid pre-action notice in compliance with Section 308 of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021,an omission that robbed the court of the necessary jurisdiction to hear the suit.
