What Modern psychology calls “Existential dread, Cognitive overload, Attention dysregulation”. The Qur’an gave it a name 1400 years ago:
Ghaflah - heedlessness.
Your Soul is Not Anxious or depressed, It’s Misaligned. Let’s unpack what this means;:
You were not created for stimulation.
You were created for connection. To Allah.
To truth. To meaning.
So when your entire day is:
– Consuming
– Reacting
– Escaping
Your soul starts to rebel.
The Qur’an says:
"وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِيشَةًۭ ضَنكًۭا"
“Whoever turns away from My remembrance for them is a life of constriction.”
[20:124]
The word “ḍankan” doesn’t just mean "hard life."
It means tight. Narrow. Trapped.
That’s how ghaflah feels; emotionally claustrophobic.
Your brain is not built to handle:
– Infinite content
– 15-second loops
– 12 tabs open
– 50 voices in your head daily
📉 You lose depth.
📉 You lose stillness.
📉 You lose yourself.
And then wonder why prayer feels empty.
This isn’t just spiritual. It’s physiological.
Studies show:
– High dopamine = low motivation
– Constant multitasking = shallow attention
– Social media addiction = increased anxiety & depressive symptoms
It’s not that Allah is far.
It’s that your attention is hijacked.
What’s the solution?
Allah gives it plainly:
“أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ”
“Truly, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest.”
[Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28]
The word "ṭumaʾnīnah" = settled calm.
Not stimulation.
Stillness.
How do you return to stillness? Not with productivity hacks. But with Prophetic rhythms:
•Fajr in silence = start the day aligned
•Dhikr in motion = anchor your mind while doing chores
•Qur’an before sleep = recalibrate your nervous system
•Dua in sujood = unburden your emotional load
This is divine regulation.
So no, you’re not broken.
Your soul is not “too sensitive.”
It’s reacting to a world that’s completely misaligned with your divine blueprint.
You were made to worship, not perform.
To remember, not scroll.
The world says: "You need more stimulation."
The Qur’an says: "You need remembrance."
The world says: "You need to keep up."
The Sunnah says: "You need to slow down."
Don’t confuse overstimulation with aliveness.
Real life is lived with Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ gave us a blueprint for inner mastery:
• Tawakkul (trust in Allah) → transforms anxiety into calm confidence
• Quiet reflection → soothes the nervous system
• Fajr & Tahajjud → strengthen willpower and mental clarity
• Dhikr & Qur’an → stabilize emotions and nourish the soul
The Sunnah isn’t just ritual, it’s a holistic upgrade for the heart and mind.
So start with just one thing:
Sit in silence after Fajr.
Let your nervous system decompress.
Say “Astaghfirullah” until it’s not just your lips, but your heart moving.
Do this consistently.
And watch your soul come back online.
And no therapist, no app, no book can replace:
Sujood. Stillness. Sincerity.
This isn’t about guilt. It’s about gentle return and If you're here, reading this, maybe it’s a nudge from Allah:
To take your soul seriously again.
To re-align. To rest in His remembrance.
اللهم اجعلنا من الذاكرين
O Allah, make us among those who remember You constantly.
