US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the withdrawal of about 5,000 troops from Germany within the next year, the Pentagon said, in the latest rift in transatlantic ties over the Mideast war.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has refused to grant Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a pardon in criminal cases related to corruption.

The pardon request came while Netanyahu’s trial is still ongoing on charges of corruption, fraud, and breach of trust, making the request unusual from a legal standpoint, as judicial practice in Israel generally requires that pardon requests be considered only after a final verdict has been reached.

President Herzog has faced growing internal and external political pressure from Netanyahu’s supporters, along with broader political debate over the potential implications of any pardon decision. However, he has emphasized his commitment to the principle of the rule of law and the independence of the presidential institution.
