TOPIC: DO NOT ALLOW STRIFE.
TEXT: GENESIS 13:1-18
MEMORY VERSE: JAMES 3:16 "For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work."
Strife, in the sense of bitter conflict is a very dangerous act. Most times it is prompted by greed and competitive mindset. I call it the elder brother of envy. Strife can destroy relationship and damage home, especially when you don't deal with it at the early stage. Philippians 2:3 says: "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Before the statement was made, the writer first of all gave some reasons why nothing should be done through strife or vainglory. He made a case for unity of brethren, being of one Spirit in fellowship and love. Phil.2:1-2. But today, we see the reverse as the case, where people that claim to fellowship as brethren in Lord, or even family members, don't have same mind, no love, and not in one accord. That is why, there are so much strife amongst brethren. When Abraham set out for where God asked him to go and he took his nephew Lot, he never imagined that, there would be any form of strife rising between his herdsmen and that of Lot. But when it happened, Abraham, became wiser instead of being offended. He sought a way to kill it before escalation . See his statement in verse 8: "And Abram said unto Lot, let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we be brethren." Abraham valued his relationship with God and his nephew so much that he never wanted anything to come in between; he rather humbled himself in asking Lot to choose first, the location where he would like to go and settle, before him, the elder one. People need to understand that allowing strife is inviting the devil to have a legal ground to operate in there lives. Today, we hardly see people that will take insult just for peace to reign; people that will give out their right for the sake of love; those that will genuinely rejoice with others on their success and fortunes; those that could celebrate and esteem others better than themselves in a given gift or task. Trust seems to be rare to find, you share your problem with brethren, it becomes a topic outside. Beloved, let's fight against strife, for it is eating deep into the fold of believers.
PRAYER: Lord, I refuse the spirit of strife in my life, in Jesus name.
