STAKEHOLDERS OF TARABA STATE UNIVERSITY
RE: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CRISIS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE
We, the concerned students of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Taraba State University (TSU), wish to openly express our deep frustration over the persistent deception, exploitation, and administrative failure that have crippled our department and destroyed the future of many aspiring Medical Laboratory Scientists.
Our grievances are not based on hearsay but on repeated false promises and contradictions from the Head of Department (HOD), Dr. Kashibu, whose actions and inactions have left over a thousand students in uncertainty.
Below are some of the undeniable truths that expose the reality of what has been happening in our department:
🔹 1. The ₦132,000 Indexcing fee
We were made to pay ₦132,000 each under the pretense that it would “facilitate all processes” needed for our accreditation and progress. To date, there has been no tangible result or accountability for that money. No receipts, no official communication, and no progress — only silence and excuses.
🔹 2. False Promise of Graduation and Induction
The HOD assured us that we would graduate and be inducted by October, yet we haven’t even written our 2nd Professional Examination. How can graduation or induction occur without completing this critical step? The promise was clearly a calculated lie to buy time and calm growing unrest.
🔹 3. Misleading Claim About Accreditation
We were told that we cannot write the 2nd Professional Examination until we have full accreditation.
He is now saying we can write second professional exam....This is false. The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) allows departments with interim accreditation to conduct only first professional exams under supervision. This misinformation has only delayed our academic progress unnecessarily.
🔹 4. Blame Game Between the Department and the University
The HOD claimed that the Council is ready to visit, but that the university is not ready. This constant shifting of blame is a diversion. If indeed the department met the requirements, MLSCN would have visited long ago. It’s clear that internal mismanagement is the real obstacle.
🔹 5. Unauthorized Student Levies
We were told that the school did not provide funds for the previous professional examinations, and that students had to contribute. Even if that were true, such funds should be properly documented through official university channels — not collected privately. Transparency has been completely absent and the same HOD said the school gave them all required resources for the professional Examinations
🔹 6. Lack of Reagents and Practical Materials
For several semesters, our practical classes have suffered due to shortage or complete lack of reagents and essential laboratory materials. This situation undermines our training and makes our program academically substandard, and all excuses and blames are to the management which the HOD stated that the school didn't provide any material for practical....
🔹 7. Inflated Indexing Fees
The official MLSCN indexing fee ranges between ₦62,000 and ₦65,000, yet the current students were forced to pay ₦82,000 under the excuse of “facilitating processes.” What is the extra money for? There has been no breakdown or accountability — another act of financial exploitation.
🔹 8. Dubious Claim of Paying Staff from Personal Pocket
The HOD claims to pay certain teaching staff from his personal funds. This is both impossible and unethical — university staff are paid through the bursary and not by individuals. This statement was clearly meant to justify the illegal collection of money from students.
🔹 9. Misrepresentation of Accreditation Duration
We were told that the department’s interim accreditation is valid until July 2026, implying that everything is fine until then. However, the truth is that without full accreditation, we cannot graduate, be inducted, or be licensed. The council is always ready to visit once all requirements are met — the delay rests squarely on the department that refuse to state out the truth and fact concerning this challenges.
⚠️ Conclusion: The Real Problem
From the above, it is evident that Dr. Kashibu, alongside his collaborators Essein and Ahmed, have continuously misled students, mismanaged departmental affairs, and enriched themselves at the expense of our education and future. Their greed, dishonesty, and incompetence are the root causes of the ongoing crisis in the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, TSU.
We therefore call on the Governor of Taraba State, the Vice Chancellor, and the school management to urgently:
Investigate these allegations transparently, and all students leaders should be called to defend this claims.
Audit all monies collected from students,
Replace or discipline those found guilty, and
Restore the integrity and future of our department.
We refuse to remain silent while our destinies are being toyed with.
Signed,
Concerned Students of
Medical Laboratory Science, Taraba State University (TSU)
For the sake of truth, justice, and the future of the profession.
