👀 If the internet is already on your phone, why is the Dark Web called the “hidden internet”?

Is there really a secret internet beneath the Surface Web? 🤔

Throughout this series, we've learned:

🌐 Surface Web – content that search engines can index.

🔐 Deep Web – content that isn't normally indexed, such as private accounts and databases.

🕶️ Dark Web – a smaller part of the Deep Web containing services accessed through specialized networks such as Tor.

So why is it called the “Hidden Internet”?
Because Dark Web services don't work exactly like ordinary websites.

On the Surface Web, you can:
👉 Search → Find a result → Open the website
Onion services, however, use .onion addresses and operate through the Tor network.
This architecture can provide additional privacy and anonymity and can help conceal information about where an onion service is hosted.
But don't fall for these myths:
❌ The Dark Web is not a completely separate internet.
❌ Not everything on the Dark Web is illegal.
❌ Using Tor does not automatically make someone a hacker.
At the same time, criminals can abuse anonymity technologies for scams, stolen data, and other cybercrime.
So, “Hidden Internet” is better understood as a description of services that aren't normally visible through standard web search—not a completely separate secret world.

🧅 Have you ever seen a website ending in “.onion” instead of “.com” or “.org”?

It's not a typing mistake! 👀

In our previous lessons, we learned about the Tor Network, Onion Routing, and the roles of Entry, Middle, and Exit Nodes.

Today, let's understand something closely associated with Tor: .onion domains.

🌐 On the regular web, you commonly see domains such as:
➡️ google.com
➡️ wikipedia.org
➡️ bbc.com
But within the Tor network, some services use .onion addresses.

🧅 .onion is not a normal domain handled through the everyday DNS system. It is used for onion services, which are designed to operate through the Tor network.
One major difference is how the connection is structured.

With a typical website:
👤 User → 🌐 Website
An onion service uses Tor's architecture to provide additional privacy and help conceal the service's network location.
That's one reason .onion addresses are commonly associated with the Dark Web.
⚠️ But remember:
Not every .onion service is illegal.
There are legitimate uses for onion services, including privacy, secure communication, and helping people access information in environments affected by censorship.
Unfortunately, criminals can also abuse the technology for illegal activities.
So:
🧅 .onion = Onion service address
❌ It does NOT automatically mean “illegal website.”
📌 REMEMBER:
🌐 .com/.org → Common public web domains
🧅 .onion → Onion services operating through Tor
