UNIOSUN has raked in a total of US$12 million in 180days

The Vice-Chancellor, Osun State University, Prof. Clement Adebooye, has said scholars from the university won a total of US$12 million in research grants, in the six months.UNIOSUN

The VC linked the development to the encouragement the management has given to the staff of the institution to proffer solutions to global problems.

Adebooye disclosed this in reaction to the recent feat achieved by the University’s Director of Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute, Prof John Agbonifo and the Director of the Office of Research and Innovation Management, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, who formed a research consortium with Professor Jean-Marc Trouille of Bradford University, for a research project titled ‘The European Union and Africa in a Multi Crises World.”

A statement by the UNIOSUN Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, on Saturday explained that the project was funded by the ERASMUS-JMO-2023-NETWORKS-HEI-NON-EU-AFRICA to the tune of €7,800,000.

The statement partly read, “Professor Agbonifo is a key facilitator of the project, while Professor Ogen is the Project Financial Signatory.

Take advantage of grants, VC urges scholars
“AfriquEurope is the largest Jean Monnet network of its kind and the largest academic network in terms of its number of participating institutions and the number of countries represented across Africa and Europe. It will also provide a framework for unique cooperation between universities and think tanks on matters relevant to Africans and Europeans.

“The aim of the AfriquEurope Network is to support the EU’s effort to recalibrate its partnership with Africa, whilst advocating closer cooperation between the two continents.”

Adebooye while reacting to the achievements of the two staff of the university, said part of his mission as Vice Chancellor was already being realised with various research efforts of the institution’s staff attracting various grants.

“In total, UNIOSUN has raked in a total of US$12 million in 2023 alone. We are proud of our researchers. This latest grant is another milestone in our research and global visibility agenda. I believe that in the not-too-distant future, we would be among universities with the highest grants won in this part of the world,” .

Adebooye who himself is the first black man to win the Humboldt Alumni Award, German Scientist of the year some years back for breaking research barrier in the cultivation of Snake tomato(Trichosanthes cucumerina). said. Also Adebooye was recently elected as the chair/president of the African-German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES), a networking organisation established in 2011 by the German government and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The remains of Chief Mrs Felicia Arinade Oladipo JP, the mother of the National Co-ordinator of Next-Level Consolidation Forum, Barrister Oladosu Oladipo GCFF, was committed to mother earth on Friday, May 12, 2023 at Oke Afo, Ikirun, Osun, Southwest Nigeria.

The ancient town of Ikirun came alive as creme de la creme including politicians, business mogul, religious leaders came in large numbers to pay their last respect to the deceased and honour Barrister Oladipo and other children.
The Oladipo matriach, who was the Iya Ijo of the African Church, Holy Trinity Parish, Oke-Afo, Ikirun died peacefully in her home on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at the age of 106.
The Christian wake keep was held for her on Thursday, at Holy Trinity Secondary School Field, Oke-Afo, Ikirun.

In his sermon, at the wake keep service attended by the children, grand, great grand children and sympathisers including friends and associates, the Bishop of Ikirun Diocese of African Church, Rt. Rev. E. O. Oduleke, said there were many things to emulate in the life of Mama Oladipo as she lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation and urged all to emulate her good virtue.
“God owns our beginning and the end. She had impacted much in the lives of the people positively and her life was worthy of emulation,” he said.

Drawing his lesson from the book of Genesis 18 vs 19, he emphasised that like Abraham commanded his household to keep the way of the Lord, so also as Mama Arinade Oladipo, as the backbone of her children also put their feet on the path of Christianity before she died.

The Primate charged everyone at the funeral service to examine his or her life and asked whether God can trust him or her.

The service at the church ended around 12:30 pm, after which, the body of Mama Oladipo was taken to her final resting place where she was lowered into the grave.

At the grave side where she was buried, the cleric offered prayers for the repose of the soul of the deceased while Barrister Oladosu Oladipo and his siblings performed the final rite for their lovely mother.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR : THE MASQUERADE OF ELDERS.

In Yorubaland, located in Southwest Nigeria, the masquerade, known as “Egungun,” represents the spirits of forefathers and ancestors, who periodically visit his descendants and give them a lot of blessings in prayer. Renown among those masquerades of elders in Yorubaland are “Oloolu” and “Alapansanpa” in Ibadan, Oyo State, Esuu, Kanmololu and Paramole, all in Gbongan, Osun State.

In the ancient Yorubaland, there was a masquerade of elders called Boosere. This masquerade, an itinerant player that moved all over the Yoruba nation, was respected for its unique style, its secretive mode of operation and its principle.

The unique principle of masquerades of elders was that they did not dance around like others but only visited certain family heads. Indeed, they were masquerades of proverbs.
Boosere moved with just three people: its handler (Atookun), its interpreter and its drummer. Boosere would not move from house to house in the morning or afternoon or evening, rather it moved in the dead of the night. However, the heads of the families that he would visit would have been informed about his visit, so that they could wait for him at their ancestral meeting pavilion.
Each time the masquerade met a head of any given family, the drummer would talk with the drum and the interpreter would interpret with parable, telling the family, “continue with your behavioral pattern.” For several years the masquerade ruled the night with mystery and myth.

However one of the elders one day summoned modicum of courage to ask his guest why the masquerade made the same statement everywhere, and the handler stressed that Boosere was only trying to draw the attention of the world to the leadership style of any given individual head of family.
The masquerade’s handler said the head of family who used his native wisdom and humility to bring kinsmen and women together would not be forgotten, while the hostile ones who had the habit of scaring his family members away would not be forgotten as well.

It was learnt that the masquerade through his lone crusade has saved many families from poor coordination, power mongering and selfishness of some heads of families, a situation that assisted greatly in strengthening the bond of so many families in Yorubaland.
From the analogy above, it could be seen that Atiku Abubakar has a resemblance of these masquerades of elders. For one, he is not the everyday masquerade that dances in every market square. He is not the attention-seeking politician who dances to every tune and by so doing, dances himself lame before the actual dance competition is flagged off. He is definitely the big player.

Like the masquerade of elders, he knows the point men in every nook and cranny of Nigeria and has their understanding. Few Nigerian politicians know this country as he does. Indeed as a bridge builder, Atiku is at home in every geo-political zone and has his tentacles in almost every Nigerian nationality. As an officer in the Nigerian Customs Service, he traversed the length and breadth of Nigeria, an experience that prepared him for high office.
He is not only an orator but also a good conversationalist, one who is equally good at speaking and listening.

A man of strong conviction, once he is sure of himself, he never shies away from being alone, even if it means fighting alone. Eagles don’t fly in companies anyway; they fly alone. He is a veteran of many life’s battles and winner of them all.
But the beauty of it all is that he is a team player, a democrat to the bone marrow. He believes in strong alliances and has proven to be a loyalist to good principles and causes. At the commencement of the Fourth Republic, he led the biggest political machinery in Nigeria and probably in Africa. Up till today, and in spite of shifting alliances here and there, the Atiku machinery is still largely intact. His political associates see him as standing head and shoulders above others as a reliable leader of men, money and materials.
Today, there is probably no political figure in Nigeria whose followership cuts across every geo-political zone like the Turakin Adamawa. Like the masquerade of elders whose constituency covered the whole of Yorubaland, Atiku is a national leader whose influence shines nation-wide like the sun

In furtherance to my analogy, I remember telling us that Boosere the masquerade moved only with three people: its handler, its interpreter and its drummer. These three were its pathfinders, its compass and navigator. They were central to the masquerade’s programme. In like manner, three principles are cardinal to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

These are rule of law, internal democracy and federalism.
It is baffling that most Nigerian politicians and political leaders only mouth democracy but in truth they are none democrats not to talk of believing in the rule of law. As a staunch advocate of the rule of law, he pursued 13 different cases on matters of constitutionalism to the Supreme Court, the nation’s apex court, winning all except one which was not decided during the third term saga. That is Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri Adamawa.

With his firm and unshakable belief in the rule of law, it follows therefore that he is an apostle of peace and peaceful change. With him, in spite of the grassroot followership which he enjoys nationwide even among the talakawa, winning elections is never a do-or-die affair. This explains why his followers never run riot. He is a democrat through and through.
Talking about democracy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar believes you cannot give what you don’t have. In similar vein, you should not preach what you don’t believe in or practise. Democracy is a practice which grows from within. A father who is dictatorial at home can hardly lead a democratic institution successfully without running into problems.

It is the view of Atiku Abubakar that democracy must flow from within. It must be perfected internally before attempting to practice it externally. He is of the firm belief that in political organisations, the modus operandi must be determined through internal democracy. In choosing leaders, picking electoral candidates and determining policy thrusts, the process must not only be democratic but also transparently done.

His views on federalism have been so well articulated that he cannot swallow them. His call for a restructuring of Nigeria is a loud call for a return of Nigeria to true and undiluted federalism.
Speaking at the launch of a book, some years back “We Are Biafrans,” at Yaradua centre in Abuja on 31st May 2016, Atiku said the rising spate of agitations nationwide called “for a restructuring and renewal of our federation to make it less centralised, less suffocating and less dictatorial in the affairs of our country’s constituent units and localities.

“As some of you may know, I have for a long time advocated the need to restructure our federation. Our current structure and the practices it has encouraged and have been a major impediment to the economic and political development of our country.”

He added: “In short, it has not served Nigeria well, and at the risk of reproach, it has not served my part of the country, the North, well. The call for restructuring is even more relevant today in light of the governance and economic challenges facing us and the rising tide of agitations, some militant and violent, require a reset in our relationships as a united nation.”

To conclude my analogy of the masquerade of elders, I must call our attention to the fact that while Boosere the masquerade of the elder operated only during the night, Atiku Abubakar is a 24-hour masquerade. As organized and calculating as he is, every hour of the day is precious to him. Like the old radio jingle of FAN Ice Cream, anytime is Fan time; morning, noon and night.
