𝙒𝙃𝙔 𝘾𝘼𝙏𝙃𝙊𝙇𝙄𝘾𝙎 𝘿𝙊𝙉'𝙏 𝘾𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙂𝙊𝘿 𝙅𝙀𝙃𝙊𝙑𝘼𝙃... Someone asked me this morning: “Why don’t Catholics use the name Jehovah?”

Here’s the simplest way I can explain it:

Imagine your name is James, but someone keeps calling you Jones. Not out of disrespect—they just misunderstood your name and ran with it. Over time, more and more people pick it up, thinking it’s correct. But it’s not.

That’s essentially what happened with the name Jehovah.

In the original Hebrew Scriptures, God’s name was written as YHWH—a sacred and unpronounced name known as the Tetragrammaton. Out of deep reverence, the Jewish people never spoke it aloud. Instead, they substituted it with Adonai, meaning “Lord.”

Later, some scholars tried to pronounce YHWH by blending its consonants with the vowels of Adonai—and that’s how the name Jehovah emerged. While well-intentioned, it’s a linguistically inaccurate rendering.

Because of this, the Catholic Church prefers to use titles like “Lord,” “God,” or “Father”—just as Jesus Himself taught us in the Lord's Prayer (Our Father).

And it’s not just the Catholic Church; most modern Bible scholars also avoid the name “Jehovah” for the same reason.

Not out of rejection, but, it will be better to honor Him rightly than to name Him wrongly.
