Hereโ€™s the simplest way I can explain it:

Imagine your name is James, but someone keeps calling you Jones. Not out of disrespectโ€”they just misunderstood your name and ran with it. Over time, more and more people pick it up, thinking itโ€™s correct. But itโ€™s not.

Thatโ€™s essentially what happened with the name Jehovah.

In the original Hebrew Scriptures, Godโ€™s name was written as YHWHโ€”a sacred and unpronounced name known as the Tetragrammaton. Out of deep reverence, the Jewish people never spoke it aloud. Instead, they substituted it with Adonai, meaning โ€œLord.โ€

Later, some scholars tried to pronounce YHWH by blending its consonants with the vowels of Adonaiโ€”and thatโ€™s how the name Jehovah emerged. While well-intentioned, itโ€™s a linguistically inaccurate rendering.

Because of this, the Catholic Church prefers to use titles like โ€œLord,โ€ โ€œGod,โ€ or โ€œFatherโ€โ€”just as Jesus Himself taught us in the Lord's Prayer (Our Father).

And itโ€™s not just the Catholic Church; most modern Bible scholars also avoid the name โ€œJehovahโ€ for the same reason.

Not out of rejection, but, it will be better to honor Him rightly than to name Him wrongly.
