Troops Rescue Army Major kidnapped during NDA attack: Spokesman
Troops of the Nigerian security forces have rescued Major Christopher Datong, abducted on August 24 by bandits who attacked Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna.
Mr Datong, however, sustained some injury during the military operation leading to his rescue, said a spokesman for the NDA, Colonel Ezindu Idimah.
In a statement issued by Mr Idimah in Kaduna, the army said the officer was rescued in the late hours of Friday, September 17 and has been taken for medical attention.
The rescue mission followed a directive of the Chief of Defence Staff that Mr Datong be delivered and his captors apprehended, the spokesman said.
He said joint operatives of the Nigerian security agencies including the military, State Security Service and the police then swung into action, combing the Afaka area of Kaduna.
Mr Idimah explained that the operations were conducted based on several leads received from various sources regarding the abductors, and likely locations the officer was held.
He said the sustained operations led to the destruction of several identified bandits’ camps in the Afaka-Birnin Gwari general area, and the neutralisation of scores of bandits, particularly in the late hours of September 17.
He said upon arrival at a camp suspected to be the location where Mr Datong was being held, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits and in the process, the abducted officer was rescued.

Buhari gives conditions for paying doctors’ benefits, faults strike.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said doctors’ outstanding benefits would not be paid until a verification exercise is carried out.

He also said that hazard allowance would be reviewed after the “deep division within the ranks of the striking doctors” is resolved.

The president said this during a meeting with officials of the Nigeria Medical Association at the State House, according to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, titled, ‘Embarking on industrial action at this time when Nigerians need you most is not the best action to take, says president Buhari to doctors’.

Buhari faulted the doctor’s industrial action, saying, “The lives of citizens that could be lost or damaged when doctors withdraw services, are precious enough to be worth opting for peaceful resolution of differences.”

The president added, “Let me speak directly to the striking doctors. Embarking on industrial action at this time when Nigerians need you most is not the best action to take, no matter the grievances.

“This Administration has a good track record of paying all debts owed to government workers, pensioners and contractors and we have even revisited debts left by past administrations, once due verification is done. Debts genuinely owed Health workers will be settled.

“I learnt that some of the 12-point demand in the ongoing strike was already addressed. Though the Review of a new Hazard Allowance has not been fully negotiated because of the sharp and deep division within the ranks of the striking doctors.’’

President Buhari said the outstanding issue of an Establishment circular issued by the Head of Service, removing House officers, NYSC Doctors from scheme of service had an addendum circular from National Salaries and Wages Commission to clarify that they will continue to earn the wages attached to them on their present wage structure.

NIREC, SGF, GOVERNORS FORUM STORM JOS; ENGAGE STAKEHOLDERS ON PEACE AND SECURITY
The Co-Chairmen of the Nigerian Inter-religous Council, Rev. Dr. Samson Ayokunle (CAN President), Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Kayode Fayemi, as well as Governors of Sokoto, and Niger States on Monday 6th September stormed Jos the Plateau State capital to commiserate with the people and Government of the State over the recent attacks.
During the visit, they engaged various stakeholders including religious, political and community leaders on how to find lasting solutions to the security challenges of the State.
In a remark, Co-Chairman of NIREC Rev. Dr. Samson Oyakunle said they were in Plateau State in response to the recent attacks that claimed lives and properties which ruptured the peace of the State that has substantially grown over the last six years.
He said NIREC has followed with regret, the toxic narratives emanating from some religious and political leaders who instead of calming down tensions, have resorted to heightening the tension. He said NIREC has resolved to hand over such persons to security agencies for prosecution.
Sultan of Sokoto also described the visit as part of their engagement towards promoting peace in Nigeria in fulfilment of their mandate and resolutions at the last quarterly meeting which was held in Abuja.
He said the meeting initially billed for Jos was shifted to Abuja following the recent unfortunate incidents. However, he said Plateau State still remains a home of peace with attraction to people of diverse backgrounds who generally want to live together. The problem he said was the inability to halt impunity and punish criminals who use religion, ethnicity and politics to cause havoc.
Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum Dr. Kayode Fayemi said the Governors of the 36 States are in solidarity with their colleague, Governor Simon Bako Lalong.

CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF IN PLATEAU; SAYS CITIZENS MUST WORK WITH SECURITY FORCES TO RESTORE PEACE
The Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Lucky Irabor has visited Plateau State to assess the security situation and interact with key stakeholders on how to ensure lasting peace in the State.
General Irabor on arrival paid a courtesy visit on Governor Simon Lalong at the new Government House Rayfield Jos where he explained that he was in the State as part of the mandate from President Muhammadu Buhari for the Armed Forces to do everything their schedule of duty to ensure that perpetrators are fished out and such attacks do not happen again.
During the stakeholders meeting held at the Victoria Gowon Hall, General Irabor said the meeting will afford him the opportunity to listen to the concerns and suggestions of all participants on the way forward.
He explained that the military can work to confront criminal elements working against the security of lives and properties, but real peace is only obtainable when the citizens make deliberate efforts to live with one another, adhere to norms, and laws as well as expose criminals amongst them.
The CDS also clarified the merging of the duties of Operation Safe Haven and the 3rd Armoured Division which he said was done to give the Commander wider latitude and resources to deploy whenever there is any emergency. He said it was a great advantage which must not be misconstrued.
He appealed to the people to cultivate trust with the Armed Forces and use all necessary channels to report any misconduct from the lowest to the highest level. He assured that no personnel will be allowed to go away with any act that runs contrary to the regulations of the Armed Forces.
Governor Simon Lalong while appreciating President Muhammadu Buhari for his concern over the recent developments in the State, welcomed the CDS for his visit.
He said the situation has been stabilised but more work needs to be done both in terms of law enforcement and peace building.
