Meet America’s Robert Francis Prevost, first American chosen as the new Pope on the 8th of May, 2025.

Pope Leone XIV, born Robert Prevost, hails from the United States and brings with him decades of pastoral experience, much of it shaped by his work as a missionary in Peru.

Fluent in Spanish and known for his pastoral sensitivity and administrative rigor, he was tapped by Pope Francis in recent years to lead the Vatican’s powerful office responsible for the appointment of bishops—a key position that shaped the global episcopate.

His election marks a major milestone not only for American Catholics but also for the global Church, as it signals a possible continuity with Francis’ vision of a more inclusive, compassionate, and globally conscious Catholicism.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has spent a lifetime marked by deep spiritual commitment, international service, and unwavering obedience to the Church’s call—no matter where it led him.

Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost grew up in a home regularly visited by priests, drawn not just by the warmth of the family, but also by the cooking of his Spanish mother, Mildred MartĂnez. His early exposure to faith life was reinforced by his father, Louis Marius Prevost, a French-Italian catechist, and by his own involvement as an altar boy and parish school student.

Drawn to the priesthood from a young age, Prevost wrestled with whether to become a diocesan priest or join a religious order. He ultimately chose the Augustinian path, drawn to its emphasis on unity, communion, and the legacy of St. Augustine of Hippo. He entered the order’s minor seminary and later studied canon law at Rome’s Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum). He was ordained a priest in 1982 by Archbishop Jean Jadot, then pro-president of the Vatican’s Secretariat for Non-Christians.

Following his ordination, Prevost was sent to Peru to serve in the Territorial Prelature of Chulucanas, a region with strong ties to the U.S. Augustinians.

His work there — across the jungle, highlands, and coast — deepened his love for the country, and he later became a naturalized Peruvian citizen. In just ten years, he held multiple roles including community prior, director of formation, judicial vicar, and professor.

In 1999, Prevost was elected provincial prior of the Midwest Augustinians. A year into his tenure, he allowed a priest who had sexually abused minors to live in a rectory near a Catholic school in Chicago, a decision made at the archdiocese’s request and later scrutinized publicly.

Two years later, in 2001, he was elected Prior General of the worldwide Augustinian order, serving two six-year terms until 2013. The following year, Pope Francis appointed him apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in northwestern Peru. He was named bishop of the diocese in 2015, overseeing a region that includes one of Peru’s largest cities, as well as rural communities and shantytowns.

In 2022, his leadership in Chiclayo came under fire when individuals accused him of failing to act on abuse allegations against two priests. The diocese strongly denied the allegations when they surfaced in international reports in 2024.

Despite controversy, Prevost continued to rise within the Church’s hierarchy. In 2020, he was appointed to the Dicastery for Bishops, the Vatican body responsible for overseeing the appointment of Latin Rite bishops worldwide. Pope Francis later confided in him about the possibility of becoming its head. Prevost responded humbly:

“Whether you decide to appoint me or to leave me where I am, I will be happy; but if you ask me to take on a new role in the Church, I will accept.”

Plateau community decries security lapses as fresh attack claims six

At least six people were killed in a fresh attack by gunmen in Marit village and the Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, sparking outrage and renewed calls for improved security.

The attack, which occurred on the evening of May 4, 2025, at around 8:11 pm in Kakuruk village, Gashish District, was confirmed by the National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Solomon Dalyop, in a statement to The PUNCH on Tuesday.

According to Dalyop, the victims include Mr. Nyam Davou, aged 44, Mrs. Kande Thoma, aged 40, and her six-month-old baby.

He added that four others—among them a seven-year-old girl and three women—were seriously injured in the attack.

“It should be on record that this ongoing dastardly acts by suspected bandits, often disguised as herders, are not entirely surprising but extremely disturbing,” Dalyop said.

“Early warnings and intelligence regarding the influx of armed elements into vulnerable areas were communicated to appropriate authorities. Yet, due to inadequate security presence, these attackers continue to target defenceless communities, sparing no one—not even women and children.”

Efforts to reach Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off at the time of reporting.

EFCC’s Press Statement on VDM’s case!

-EFCC's Case against
Martins Vincent Otse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the exercise of its mandate of tackling economic and financial crimes, invited Martins Vincent Otse owing to a series of petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes raised against him. He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him through his known addresses and medium of communication. The petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the Commission.

It is needful to admit that the Commission is aware of several unguarded attacks of the suspect against its operations. While such conduct is condemnable, his arrest was not informed by such attacks. The relevant law enforcement agency will be allowed to lookinto them.

The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission.

The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard. He has been offered an administrative bail and would be released after fulfilling all the bail conditions.
The Commission appreciates the interest of Nigerians in its operations.

The passion, enthusiasm and torrential reactions to all of its activities are welcome.
However, insinuations about its motive in carrying out its assignment should no longer continue. The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour. As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed.

VeryDarkMan arrested over multiple petitions, to be charged soon — EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has said that the arrest of social media influencer, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, was carried out over multiple petitions submitted to its agency.

The anti-graft agency confirmed to BBC News Pidgin through its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, on Monday.

According to him, VeryDarkMan was taken into custody following complaints from several petitioners on the allegation of cyberstalking.

He said, “We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners

“We will release him when he meets the bail conditions and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding.”

When asked if the case was connected to Guaranty Trust Bank, Oyewale noted that the petitions were from different individuals and the agency owed them a duty of protection.

Oyewole added that the commission was planning to arraign the social media activist.
