Woman Allegedly Detained for Over Five Years Reappears in Abuja, Raises Questions Over Due Process

ABUJA, Nigeria — Questions over prolonged detention and access to justice have been raised following the reported appearance of Onyeaka Ozioma Elizabeth at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to Barrister Nnaemeka, who said he encountered Elizabeth at the court premises, she told him that she was arrested at 33 Onitsha, Anambra State, more than five years ago by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Elizabeth reportedly alleged that she was subsequently taken to the Wawa Military Detention Centre in Kainji, Niger State, where she claimed she remained without access to her family or a lawyer.

The account further states that Elizabeth provided the telephone number of her sister. When contacted, her sister allegedly expressed disbelief that Elizabeth was still alive until she saw her in a video.

The circumstances surrounding Elizabeth's reported detention, including the legal basis for her prolonged confinement and whether she was brought before a court within the period required by law, remain matters requiring clarification from the relevant authorities.

Barrister Nnaemeka questioned what form of fair trial or justice could emerge from what he described as an “illegal and dehumanizing detention.” He also questioned whether Elizabeth's alleged detention was connected to her perceived support for Biafran separatism.

The allegations have not, in themselves, established criminal wrongdoing by any particular government agency or individual. The DSS and other relevant authorities would need to provide their account of Elizabeth's arrest, detention, access to legal representation, and current legal status.

The case has nevertheless renewed concerns about due process, prolonged detention, access to counsel, and the fundamental rights of detainees in Nigeria.

The National Chairman of the People Redemption Party (PRP) Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the worst leader Nigeria has ever had.

Baba-Ahmed said this during an interview on Symfoni TV, on Tuesday.

According to him, the president’s denial of the issues raised by the Catholic bishops despite clear evidence, underscores his ineffectiveness as a leader. He equally criticized Tinubu over his ‘poor’ performance, alleging a disconnect between the government and the people.

“The North will be finished if Tinubu wins in 2027. He’s the worst President ever in the history of Nigeria. The problem is the disconnect between the government and the people.

“Catholic bishops went to the President. These are highly respected people. He must have thought that it would be a good outing for him. Otherwise, he wouldn’t even have agreed to meet them.

“They went to him, politely said to him, Mr President, the people are not happy with you. They are hungry. They are insecure. There are a lot of problems running in the country.

“For every issue the bishops raised, the President said, no, you are wrong. I am right. There is no hunger in this country, what you are saying is not true. Now, for goodness’ sake, a President in charge of his faculties, in charge of a country that should have prepared him, would not do this,” he said.

“Christians Can Stop Insulting Muslims, Muslims Can Stop Insulting Christians — That’s How We Live in Peace” — Sultan

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Christians and Muslims in Nigeria to stop insulting one another, stressing that mutual respect is essential for peaceful coexistence.

The Sultan made the statement on Tuesday in Abuja at the International Conference on National Security for Socio-economic Development, organised by Jama’atu Izalatil Bidiah wa Iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS Nigeria) in collaboration with the Muslim World League of Saudi Arabia.

“We must be honest with ourselves that Christians can stop insulting Muslims. Muslims can stop insulting Christians. And that’s how we live in peace,” he said.

He urged Nigerians of different faiths to embrace tolerance, respect one another and avoid actions or statements capable of deepening religious tensions.

Sheikh Jingir Defends Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Says Muslims Have ‘Suffered Enough’ in Plateau

The National Chairman of the Jama’atu Ahlus Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Muhammad Sani Yahya Jingir, has defended his support for Muslim-Muslim presidential tickets ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he stands by his position despite the controversy surrounding his recent remarks.

Jingir argued that Christians, like Muslims, have the right to encourage their supporters to vote for candidates they believe represent their interests.

“I wonder how Nigerian Christians would call for voting for their own, but somebody will say I have no right to ask for whom we should vote for,” he said.

Explaining his position, the cleric referred to what he described as the experiences of Muslims in Plateau State.

“Voting Muslim-Muslim tickets is what I stand on because we have suffered enough in the hands of Christians in Plateau State,” Jingir said.

He further alleged that Muslims in parts of Plateau State had experienced discrimination and questioned the fairness of some past electoral processes.

Jingir also cited an alleged disparity in vote figures from different areas, asking how such differences could be reconciled with the principle of electoral fairness.

However, the electoral figures and historical allegations cited by the cleric are claims made by him and should not be treated as independently established facts without supporting electoral records or other evidence.

CAN chairman Rejects Claim That Tinubu and Shettima Were Elected by Muslims Alone
