PLHA CRUSHES COMPULSORY ANNUAL PURCHASE OF TEXTBOOKS, GRADUATION CEREMONIES
By Shabul Mazadu
Respite treads and beams on parents' path in Plateau State as the exploitative narrative imposed on them by schools in hampering recycling of textbooks used by their children and wards to compulsorily purchasing new ones in every calendar year, has been stemmed by the State legislature.
The lawmakers insist that books can be re-circulated among pupils, including siblings, as part of measures to reduce the burden and untold hardship faced by families.
The resolution followed a motion moved by the member representing Shendam Constituency, Hon. Joseph Bukar, and seconded by Hon. Mathew Kwarpo Sylvanus, representing Mangu South, at Thursday plenary.
Presenting the motion, Bukar described the narrative as exploitative and unfair, stressing that Plateau parents are not seeking luxury but fairness and relief. And that adopting a sustainable textbook policy will make education more affordable.
The House resolved that a four year textbook cycle be adopted where the approved ones should remain in use within the stipulated four years. And that parents should also be allowed the freedom to purchase textbooks from other sources outside the schools.
The legislators further encouraged Parent-Teacher Associations and the schools to establish book banks and swap schemes to help families cut costs while promoting responsible re-use.
In the same vein, the House condemned the growing trend of yearly graduation ceremonies in nursery and primary schools, describing the trend as wasteful and unnecessary; arguing that such ceremonies place avoidable financial burdens on parents without adding academic value.
To ensure compliance, the Committee on Education was directed to summon heads of private schools alongside officials of the Ministry of Education to communicate the resolutions of the House and warned that any school found violating the directive would face heavy sanctions.
In his closing remarks, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel, commended members for their sacrifice and robust contributions during deliberations. He assured that the Assembly remains committed to legislations and resolutions that will bring relief and development to the people of Plateau State.

PLHA TO END MENACE OF HOUSE AGENCY
By Shabul Mazadu
The scourging and excruciating pains inflicted on tenants by middlemen of land-lordship and tenancy in Plateau State popularly called House Agents, who exorbitantly and heartlessly extort money from people seeking houses to rent in the name of agency fee, will soon be history, as the state legislature has taken steps to crush the repugnant burden.
The House in its Thursday Plenary condemned in strong terms the exploitative tendencies of house agents using illegal and exorbitant charges and resolved to prohibit such activities by introducing a licensing system and repealing the outdated Rent Edict.
The observation which was made by Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, member representing Pankshin North, and fully supported by the entire House calling for urgent regulation of unauthorized house agents in the State, caused jubilation across the city and prayers for speedy ex*****on of the ban on the extortion plague.

PLHA UPWARDLY REVIEWS ROYAL FATHERS' REMUNERATION
By Shabul Mazadu
Royal fathers in Plateau State might soon have their remuneration upwardly improved as the bill seeking to scale it up passed second reading at Thursday Plenary in the legislature.
The Bill which was sponsored by Hon. Daniel Nanbol Listick, Member representing Langtang North Central, and co-sponsored by Hon. Naanlong Daniel of Mikang and Hon. Theodore Maiyaki of Quaan-Pan South, was designed to review and standardize salaries, allowances, and entitlements of traditional rulers in line with the current economic situation as explained by the sponsors.
The Bill also makes provisions for categories of traditional rulers, appointment guidelines, death benefits, use of symbols of office, as well as the administration of Chiefdoms.
The lawmakers also stressed the need for the salary and other entitlements upgrade for the Royal fathers based on the crucial role they play in peace building, conflict resolution, cultural preservation, and grassroots governance in the state; and that their welfare reflects their strategic importance in the society.
After robust deliberation, the Bill passed second reading and was referred to the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for further legislative action.
Responding to the efforts of the House, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Naanlong Daniel, commended members for their inputs and assured that the Assembly remains committed to enacting laws that will promote peace, development, and effective governance across Plateau State.

NIGER STATE BANS UNLICENSED RELIGIOUS PREACHING
By Shabul Mazadu
From now on, only licenced religious preachers can preach in Niger State as announced by the State Government yesterday.
In a report by New Telegraph newspaper, Niger State Government has currently suspended all religious sermons until clerics obtain valid licenced from it.
According to the report, Niger State Government deemed it necessary to take such a step to stem inciting messages against democracy with reference to Muhammed Ibn Muhammad, who is reported to be using his school and preaching sessions against democracy and making series of inflammatory statements in Hausa and Fulfude.
The Government said all clergy who would preach in Niger State must go to the Bureau of Religious Affairs and obtain a form to fill after which they will be screened by a panel before giving licence to preach.
The government further clarify that the measure taken is inclusive to all religions, however, for now they are starting with Muslim preachers because the Christians' forms are not ready. But as soon as they are ready, they will be informed for pickups.

OBASANJO CONFESSES IGNORANCE OF REAL AGE
By Shabul Mazadu
Despite accepting 5th March, 1937, as date, month and year of birth, former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo confessed ignorance of real natal year and age.
This he did on March 5, 2014, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when he marked his 77th birthday as captured by Leadership.
Speaking at a birthday celebration organised for him by Centre For Human Security, CHS, and UNESCO Institute for African, Culture and International Understanding, IACIU, of his Presidential Library, Obasanjo stressed that he had no record of birthday because his parents did not document it. He said, "There are some people including me who do not know their exact birthdays. My mother only told me that I was born on Ifo market day. According to her, in our village, she had prepared to go to Ifo market and Ifo market is every five days.
"She said as she was preparing, she went into labour and before those who went to Ifo market returned, I was born. Don't ask me what month or what year. Whether I know the exact date or not, I think God has made my path to be glorious."
Obasanjo emphasised that the most important thing is the fact that he was born, and that God has been good to him by not considering his faults in which he failed him several times. He said, "I have disappointed God several times but God had never taken my faults against me. If he had counted my faults against me, I would have been consumed.
"So, what has been sustaining me is the grace of, mercy, and kindness of God."

KWANKWASIYA RED & WHTIE COLOUR SYMBOL UNVEILED
By Shabul Mazadu
Many Nigerians ponder over the red and white colour stripes on caps, hijabs and other head gears won in Kano State and other places by supporters of Engineer Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Nigerian New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, 2023 Presidential candidate. Some attributed such identity to cultism, some to mere political identification and some watch as onlookers.
The red and white stripe cap, hijabs and head gear movement which started way back in 2011 when Kwankwaso came to power as Kano State Governor for the second time, having lost his consecutive second term to Ibrahim Shekarau in 2004, had its symbol unveiled by his aide in 2014.
Then Special Assistant to Kwankwaso on Governmental Affairs, Kaduna Liaison Office, Alhaji Bala Kubarachi, said to Daily Trust on February 25, 2014, that the red cap signifies purity and dislike for corruption; adding that their movement is to better the lives of the people with purity and disdain for corruption.
Therefore the Kwankwasiya movement stands for purity and anti-corruption.

PRESIDENCY 2027: GEJ & DANGERS OF TAKING A SHOT (By Shabul Mazadu)
The pressure being mounted on a former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, to take a shot at the presidency come 2027 seems to set him on a tight corner as unveiled by his indecisiveness.
There are many voices persuading him to contest and there are many beseeching him not to.
The best option for him is not to contest considering the negative impact it will have on him, except he wants to join the club of leaders with sad ending of soiling their records.
Either way, whether he wins or loses, he will stain and destroy the well-wish and respect he is currently enjoying.
The current respect he is enjoying, was bred from his acceptance of defeat in 2015 and renege of empleomania which stemmed bloodbath in the country. His stance fulfilled his promise of His ambition not being worthy of the blood of any Nigerian. He said, "If by default somebody wins the presidency, I will go back to my state. Nigeria is not my father's property." The fulfillment of the promise made him noble and venerable.
It wasn't because of good policies or achievements or economic policies neither tackling insecurity drastically that earn him the respect he is enjoying, because his regime has failed. He himself confessed in 2015 that no government can fix Nigeria in four years. Meaning, his administration was a failure. There are can of worms that could be reopened to GEJ's chagrin if he succumbs to pressure and contest such as: the misappropriation of $2bn meant for arms purchase which were diverted for politics; the open support for corruption during the Nigerian Governors Forum's election where he glaring supported 16 as greater than 19; increase in PMS price leading to massive protests in January 2012 which enhanced inflation; his nonchalant attitude when there was bomb-blast in Nyanya, Abuja, but went to Kano for electioneering campaign and danced; the 1st October, 2010 Abuja Bomb-blast where he tried blaming a region until Henry Okah, chairman of the Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria Delta, MEND, took responsibility and claimed they were paid to do so; the allegation by his Security Adviser, Gen. Patrick Azazi, that his party, the PDP under his watch was sponsoring the Boko Haram; his statement that there were Boko Haram in his government, but did not apprehend them and also his failure to deal with the Boko Haram which captured some local government areas and hoisted their flags. There are many ills that will resurface and his weaknesses dusted which will be harmful to him.
If he loses, he will set a record of being defeated twice, which will not be good to his profile as former president.
If he wins, he can only go for a term, and there is no magic that he can perform to make Nigeria better in four years. He said it himself on 26th January, 2015, at the palace of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, during the continuation of his re-election campaign.
He confessed in Addis Ababa to Nigerians in 2011 that if voted for and did not end electricity problem and insecurity, he cannot do anything. He said, "But if I'm voted into power within the next four years, the issue of power will become a thing of the past.
"Four years is enough for anyone to make significant improvement and if I can't improve on power within the period, it then means I cannot do anything even if I am there for the next four years."
He failed to fulfill the promise after voted for in 2011. Out of his mouth comes out that failure to stabilise power and ending insecurity within four years means he is incapacitated. After the four years he changed his voice to no government can fix Nigeria in four years.
He tried fixing Nigeria when things were better but to no avail, is it this time that things have gone really bad that he can do something and that within four years?
Muhammadu Buhari, had a better and the best name among his predecessors and successors before insisting to be the President. And after becoming the president, his name was soiled and seen as the worst thing that ever happened to Nigeria.
Goodluck should look into this, and learn from Buhari. He should keep the respect he is enjoying as Nigerians have forgotten his misrule. But if he insist, it is his choice, and either ways his name will be soiled worse than before.

JOURNALISTS URGED TO SEPARATE CRIME FROM TRIBE, RELIGION
By Shabul Mazadu
Piqued by attribution of crimes to tribe and religion without focusing mainly on the offence and perpetrator which is responsible for stereotyping ethnic nationalities and religions to vices and causing reprehensible behaviours towards them, Leadership Newspaper calls on Nigerian journalists engaged in such practice to desist; saying it does not serve the cause of justice.
In its today's editorial titled "Why Nigeria's Media Must Separate Crime from Tribe," Leadership observed that framing bandits, kidnappers or arsonists in terms of tribe or faith protects crimes by shifting public anger from individuals to entire communities.
According to the Paper, it is a distortion of journalism ethics and purpose linking crime suspects to their religion or tribe; adding that the purpose of the profession is to promote peace, prosperity and progress by informing, educating and holding to account public office holders.
Leadership cautions that warlords, conflict entrepreneurs, and political opportunists thrive in an atmosphere of ethnic and religious suspicion. And that, by reproducing such divisive frames, the media wittingly or unwittingly, becomes an enabler of crises rather than peace facilitator.
It added that Nigeria's diversity requires a more responsible journalism practice where criminals must be held accountable as individuals and not as representatives of faith or ethnic group.
Leadership further calls on the Media to adopt deliberate editorial policy that prioritises depersonalised fact-based reporting.
It also beseeches the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, the Nigerian Press Council, the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, to rise to the occasion and see to it that reportage qualifying crime suspects with their tribe or religion fizzles out.
Leadership posits saying, "We, therefore call on Editors, regulators and policy makers to urgently confront this issue. Responsible reporting must become standard, not the exception. Anything less is a betrayal of public trust. Crime is crime, no matter who commits it. The Nigerian Press must rise above sensationalism and identity politics to embrace a higher duty; nation building through truth, fairness and responsibility."

2027: WIKE DECLINES PRESIDENTIAL CONTEST, URGES GEJ TO SHUN CONTEST, SLAMS PETER OBI
By Shabul Mazadu
With the 2027 general elections preparation fast approaching at the distant horizon, and gladiators unsheathing their swords in combat readiness, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declined taking a shot at the presidency, called on a former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GEJ, to shun pressure to contest the presidential seat, and slams Peter Obi, the Labour Party, LP, Presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections over intention to return to the PDP to contest the Presidency.
Wike made the declination, urge and slam in a media chat with journalists in Abuja yesterday on issues bordering on his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the 2027 general elections.
According to him, despite his party zoning the presidency to the South where he hails from, he will not contest the Presidency on the premise that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu whom he promised to support is contesting, saying, "I will not run. I have integrity, and I have character. My position is clear. There is no way my appointer is there, and we are saying he should run, and then I turn around and say I want to contest."
On GEJ's issue, Wike urges him to shun the pressure being mounted on him and the temptation to join the presidential race, urging him to stay and enjoy his statesmanship.
Wike slammed Obi saying he cannot abuse the PDP, and then nurse the intention of returning to run for the presidency on its platform. He said, "Obi was abusing the party, saying it is rotten. So now the party is suddenly good enough for him to come and contest on its platform? That kind of ambition can even make people go to Satan's house."
He further took a swipe at those calling on Obi to return to the PDP and contest, adding that such a move is disastrous and will spell doom for the party. He said, "Anybody suggesting that Obi should return is entitled to their opinions. But if you want to destroy this party, then bring Obi back."

WAS RT. HON. DEWAN A PATRIOT OR VILLAIN? (By Shabul Mazadu)
There is an ongoing political debate in some quarters about the immediate past Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan while he held sway as the legislature helmsman. Some qualify him as a villain while some as patriot. But what was he?

To get the clear picture, the situation he found himself must clearly be understood and the way he handled the problem.

Dewan became speaker at a time there was massive tension and anger in the land; anger by constituents whose legislators were sacked by the Court of Appeal which they believed was the handiwork of the immediate past governor, Simon Lalong, a staunch All Progressives Congress, APC, stalwart using his closeness with the President of the Appellate Court. It was a situation of very high anxiety by members of the APC who were so eager to have their House of Assembly candidates who lost in the 2023 general elections to take over the legislature. The divide between the APC and the PDP supporters surpassed mere politics, but culminated into hatred and battle ready for serious confrontation of any sort. However, the aversion depended on the survival of Barrister Caleb Mutfwang as Governor.

It was obvious that the Federal Government which understood the severity of the situation handled it with care to avoid any breakdown of law and order due to inter-party confrontation which would have been very disastrous for Plateau. That was why modification ensued in the Supreme Court to retain the victory of the PDP governor; likewise the non-pressure mounted on the governor and the speaker to swear in the victors at the Court of Appeal from the FG. It must be clearly understood that in running a government, there are drastic measures and compromises made to avert dangerous situations that was why Chief Obafemi Awolowo said, “The aim of a good government is the welfare of the entire people under its jurisdiction. In pursuance of this aim, it is impossible for a government to please everyone. As long, however, as the government is satisfied that any given policy, measure, programme, or legislation will rebound to the greatest good of the greatest number of the citizens under its charge, it should be inflexible in its path.”

Dewan as Speaker was inflexible in swearing in the victors at the Court of Appeal despite several calls and attacks on his personality. His stance doused every tension until the time was ripe, then he sworn in the remaining House members and further resigned as the Speaker paving way for the APC to take over the House and the zoning of the speakership to its rightful zone based on the gentleman agreement. This fulfills the adage, “It’s not the beginning of the matter, but the end of it.” Though there was huge delay, the right thing was done which stemmed any form of political bloodbath that could have ensued and pitch brother against brother.

Dewan exhibited leadership qualities which were remarkable.
The revered US Clergy and strong advocate for justice, Rev. Jesse Jackson, said, “Leaders must be tough enough to fight, tender enough to cry, human enough to make mistakes, humble enough to absorb the pain and resilient enough to bounce back and keep on moving.” Dewan to a large-extend exhibited great leadership qualities. He was tough enough to face then ruling party in the state, the APC, and then strongest opposition, the PDP, at the 2023 general elections in a party without resources and structure, the YPP, and won. He did not consider his pocket, he did consider the gigantism of the APC and PDP, but as David faced Goliath with mere sling and stone, Dewan faced the PDP and the APC. This is a spirit of a tough leader who fights confidently.
He made mistakes too by replying people he shouldn’t have replied on social media. And despite the insults from his opponents, he absorbed and kept moving. Mistakes are inevitable, but taking correction is what counts more. Chief Obafemi Awolowo said, “It would be pretentious to suggest that we had not made mistakes, but which earthly institution is free from these unavoidable human frailties?”

His endurance and ability as a young man with the first experience in holding an esteemed high position in the state, to absorb the bashings from stakeholders, the media, the opposition and so many citizens for not swearing in the victors of the Appellate Court, unveiled his potentialities of determination, focus and purposeful leadership willing to die for the right course. And being exposed to the juicy position of the Speaker, he did not hesitate to leave when it was time to do so. He did not put up a fight and lobby to retain his seat, he considered the advantages of his leaving on the state and the government above his personal interest and resigned with pride. That was humility and selflessness.

Finally, Dewan will always be remembered for stabilizing the polity and averting serious probable bloodbath inter-political conflict. He consolidated the seat of the governor from the fear of impeachment, he swore in the victors of the Appellate Court, he vacated the seat for the leading party to control the House and allowed the zoning of the Speakership have its rightful course. He has achieved what he was elected as Speaker to do. Remember, it was his first experience as a legislator and an elective office holder.

Dewan is an asset that the state should not destroy, but prune and build.
