ARMY OPERATIONS CHIEF UNDERTAKES ASSESSMENT VISIT TO NORTH EAST THEATRE COMMAND
…Urges Commanders to Sustain Momentum, Adopt Innovative Approaches

The Chief of Operations (Army), Major General Uwem Bassey, has charged field commanders of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), to sustain operational momentum and embrace innovative strategies in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the North East.

Maj Gen Bassey gave the charge during an operational assessment visit to Headquarters Theatre Command OPHK, Maiduguri, between Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 September 2025. The visit, conducted on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede , was aimed at assessing operational effectiveness, boosting troops morale, ensuring strategic alignment, and providing direct support in the theatre.

Speaking during the tour, the Army Operations Chief conveyed the COAS’s commitment to directly engage with commanders, review progress, and address challenges requiring immediate intervention. He urged troops to “go all out, dominate every space, and deny terrorists freedom of action,” stressing that fresh and innovative approaches were vital to achieving decisive outcomes.

Maj Gen Bassey also emphasised jointness in operations, calling on land, maritime, and air components of OPHK to sustain and strengthen cooperation with other security agencies. He commended the synergy already achieved, noting that collective effort remained crucial in dismantling terrorist networks.

The visit featured interactive sessions with sector and component commanders, during which operational matters and challenges were extensively discussed.

His tour covered key locations including 21 Armoured Special Brigade, Bama; 151 Battalion, Banki Junction; 152 Battalion, Banki; and Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bula Yobe. At each location, he was separately briefed by formation and unit commanders on operational activities and challenges. He assured them that issues raised would be given urgent attention. Maj Gen Bassey appreciated troops on their impressive battle performance and urged them to sustain the operational tempo.

While addressing troops, Maj Gen Bassey reiterated the Nigerian Army’s zero tolerance for indiscipline and cowardice in the theatre. He urged personnel to make full use of available firepower to decisively deal with terrorists, maintaining an aggressive posture to dominate their areas of operation.

He also Interacted with members of the Hybrid Forces and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), conveying the appreciation and encouragement of the COAS. He reminded them of their vital role as sons of the soil in defending their communities, urging them to remain loyal, courageous, and steadfast.

Maj. Gen. Bassey cautioned against acts of double-dealing, warning that intelligence leaks to terrorists undermine troops and endanger local communities. He charged all personnel and auxiliary forces to remain focused and resolute, declaring: “Some may appear friendly by day but act as enemies by night. Such conduct will not be tolerated.

“We must all stand firm, remain disciplined, and fight with every resource at our disposal until terrorism is decisively defeated.”

He assured that troops, working in close coordination with other components and agencies, would continue to sustain aggressive operations to dominate the battlefield and deny terrorists freedom of action.

Troops neutralise insurgents, recover arms in Kainji Lake National Park
Troops of 22 Armoured Brigade, operating under Operation Park Strike V, in collaboration with Park Rangers, have neutralised insurgents and recovered arms and motorcycles during an ambush operation in Kainji Lake National Park, Niger State.
A statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the brigade, Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, said the operation was carried out on Thursday following credible intelligence on insurgents’ movement in the Zugurma Section of the park.
Nwankwo said the troops laid an ambush at Tungan Talle crossing point at about 1:15 a.m., where they engaged the insurgents in a firefight.
He said the troops’ superior firepower overpowered the criminals, leading to an unconfirmed number of insurgents neutralised, while others sustained gunshot injuries.
According to him, three AK-47 rifles and four motorcycles were recovered during the operation.
He, however, said one Park Ranger sustained gunshot injuries but had been stabilised after receiving prompt medical attention.
Nwankwo quoted the Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ezra Barkins, as commending the troops for their gallantry and professionalism.
He said Barkins, who relocated to the Step-Up Headquarters at Wawa Cantonment for effective coordination, urged the troops to sustain the momentum until criminal elements were flushed out of the area.Further sources indicate that Kainji Lake National Park, which spans parts of Niger and Kwara States, has in recent months become a hideout for armed groups targeting surrounding communities and travellers.
Residents around Zugurma and Borgu sections of the park said that the ongoing clearance operations have significantly reduced incidents of ambush and cattle rustling in the area.
They, however, appealed for sustained military presence to consolidate the gains and prevent the insurgents from regrouping in the forested zones of the park.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to defending the territorial integrity of the nation, and assured that it would continue to work with other security agencies and stakeholders to restore lasting peace and security in its areas of operation.

COMMANDANT NACOLM VISITS SISTER SERVICES... Solicits More Collaboration

The Commandant, Nigerian Army College of Logistics and Management (NACOLM), Major General Adewale Collins Adetoba on assumption of office has paid courtesy visits to the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command (LC), Nigerian Air Force and Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC) Nigerian Navy. The visits were aimed at enhancing the existing collaboration between the college and the two services.

The Commandant, speaking at the Headquarters LC Conference Room, Ikeja Lagos and Headquarters, WNC Conference Hall, Apapa Lagos on Wednesday, 24 September 2025 expressed profound gratitude to the AOC LC, Air Vice Marshal Adeniran Ademuwagun and the FOC WNC, Rear Admiral Mike Gregory Oamen for the warm reception granted him. He noted that the visits were aimed at identifying areas of mutual benefits between the college and the sister services, whom he described as key stakeholders of the college.

He intimated them that at inception in 2002, the college offered training to officers only in the Logistics Staff Course (LSC) and Logistics Management Course (LMC). This was aimed at exposing non logistics officers to logistics engagement. However, the college curriculum was subsequently expanded, and the name was changed from NACOL to NACOLM in 2020. This was to accommodate the additional mandate given to the college to train officers in leadership, staff duties, and management. This led to the introduction of Junior Leadership and Staff Officers Course (JLSOC) and Senior Leadership and Staff Officers Course (SLSOC), respectively.

General Adetoba further appreciated both Commands for their continuous support to the growth and development of NACOLM, especially in the areas of releasing resource persons to lecture the students on the roles and capabilities of the service in joint operations. He also appreciated them for always making their facilities and platforms available to the students of the college during their study tours. He also assured them of the college continous support to the commands whenever the need arises.

Responding, the AOC thanked the Commandant for the visit. He asserted that logistics has taken a different dimension from what it used to be in the past, noting that success in a single service or joint operation is heavily dependent on effective knowledge and use of logistics. He also emphasized the need for a more proactive and experts based approach in managing logistics in the military. AVM Ademuwagun pledged the command collaboration and full support to the college.

On his part, the FOC WNC, Rear Adm Oamen also assured the Commandant of the Command support especially in the area of taking students of the college on sea trips and tour of some of its facilities and platforms. He commended the college for the synergy it had maintained with Navy. Added that the deployment of Naval Officers as Directing Staff and Chief Instructors at the college has been most rewarding for both services.

Highlights of the visits were presentation of souvenirs and inspection of Quarter Guard by the Commandant.
