Plateau Government Challenges Court Judgment on LG Chairmen Tenure

The Office of the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Plateau State has officially filed an appeal against parts of a recent judgment delivered by the Plateau State High Court in Suit No. PLD/J86/2026.

The appeal was filed at the Court of Appeal, Jos Division, meaning the state government is asking a higher court to review and possibly overturn some aspects of the earlier ruling.

According to the Ministry of Justice, the case centers on the interpretation of laws guiding the tenure of democratically elected Local Government Council Chairmen, particularly provisions in the Plateau State Local Government Council Law and the PLASIEC Law 2024.

In simple terms, the disagreement is about how the law should be interpreted regarding the stay in office or tenure of local government chairmen in the state.

The Plateau State Government said the decision to appeal is part of its commitment to due process, constitutional order, democratic governance, and the rule of law.

With the appeal now formally before the appellate court, the matter will be determined by the Court of Appeal in Jos.
