Kaduna Proactive on Flood Risks, Strategic Team Reviews Weekly Weather Forecasts

In a decisive move to mitigate the impact of the impending rainy season, the strategic team for the 2025 Flood Emergency Operation and Response comprising stakeholders in emergency response is currently convened in a weekly meeting at the headquarters of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA).

The high-level meeting, which is ongoing, is primarily focused on a thorough review of the latest weather outlook, forecasts, and advisories issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). This critical analysis forms the bedrock of the state's preemptive strategy to manage flood-related disasters.

This weekly briefing is a core component of KADSEMA's concerted effort to coordinate a robust and effective response to all emergencies attributed to the 2025 rainfall season. The initiative is designed to ensure all relevant sub-committees and response units are operating with the most current data, enabling swift and informed decision-making to protect lives and property.

The ongoing session is a reflection of the state government's commitment to fulfilling its primary obligation of keeping all citizens safe.

By prioritizing early warning systems and strategic preparedness, the government aims to significantly reduce the vulnerability of communities often affected by seasonal flooding.

KADSEMA LEADS ASSESSMENT OF AREAS IMPACTED BY FLOOD

A major multi-agency assessment has revealed damages caused by two days of heavy rainfall in Kaduna State, with atleast 171 residential buildings affected and directly impacting 545 households across several communities in Kaduna North Local Government Area.

The coordinated assessment, led by the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), was conducted on September 6th and 7th by a team of emergency responders and disaster management experts.

The mission aimed to evaluate the impact of the torrential rains that pounded the state on September 4th and 5th, 2025.

The stakeholder team included the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Christian Aid, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Red Cross, and the Kaduna State Fire and Public Safety Agency, among others.

The worst-hit area was the Kigo Road Community, where a staggering 69 buildings and 276 households were flooded. The deluge also affected Merits Kids Academic School, a private nursery and primary school.

In Rifin Guza Community, a river overflowed its banks, submerging buildings.

The assessment team was forced to shift from evaluation to immediate action, assisting residents with the emergency evacuation of their properties.

Other severely affected communities include:

· Shooting Range, Kabala Costain; Bashama Road, Tudun Wada; Ungwan Rimi; with a key connecting bridge to Libreville Road overwhelmed by water; Malali G.R.A.

The team also visited a camp established at the Girls Primary School in Kigo Community. There, the traditional ruler commended the rapid response of the state government and further appealed for 24-hour security personnel to protect the camp from threats of theft, vandalism, and issues of open defecation around the camp.

This comprehensive assessment marks a critical first step in the state's disaster response, providing crucial data to coordinate relief efforts, including the provision of emergency shelter, food, and medical supplies for the hundreds of displaced residents.
