TEXT: EPHESIANS 5:15-20
TOPIC: BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.

EPHESIANS 5:15-20 NIV

15:Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,

16:making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

17:Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

18:Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,

19:speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,

20:always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.

The Christian should be an example wherever he finds himself because relationship with Christ.

Yesterday, we established that we are called to represent Christ in the public square as Christians,

Paul further drew the attention of the Ephesian believers to the reality of their calling and the challenges they were facing.

He encouraged them to be very careful not to live as fools but be wise so as to take advantage of the opportunities God brings their way daily.

A close contact with God will reveal His will which will help us influence others positively.

When a Christian is involved in drunkenness, Christ's testimony will ebb in his life. But when he gets filled with the Holy Spirit, the witness of Christ will be great. So, we need to be filled with the Spirit of God as a mark of our wisdom.

QUESTION: Are you filled with the Holy Spirit?

PRAYER: Grant me the wisdom to fulfil Your desires for my life as I live today and forever, in Jesus name. Amen.

TOPIC: PRACTICAL CHRISTIANITY

God expects all that have identified with Him to live based of the revelation in His word. One attribute of God is love and every one of us is expected to live in love.

This desire for love takes every believer away from things that defile because they are of darkness and not of love.

According to Paul, things that are not supposed to be found amongst believers are sexual immorality, impurity, greed and deception, among others.

Christians are supposed to live as people of the light so that the radiance of God's presence in them will draw others to His light as well as build their lives.

We must therefore be resolute about living pure lives so as to remain His representatives on earth.

QUESTION: Are you living practical Christian Life?

PRAYER: Cleanse me, dear Lord, of every attitude that defiles me and grant me the grace to represent You wherever I find myself, in Jesus namne. Amen.

17:So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.

18:They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

19:Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

20:That, however, is not the way of life you learned

21:when you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.

22:You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;

23:to be made new in the attitude of your minds;

24:and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

25:Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

26:“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

27:and do not give the devil a foothold.

28:Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

29:Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

30:And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31:Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.

32:Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

*EPHESIANS 3:14-21 NIV*

14:For this reason I kneel before the Father,

15:from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

16:I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

17:so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,

18:may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,

19:and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20:Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,

21:to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

*GET ROOTED IN CHRIST*

When a person gets rooted in Christ, he pursues God's purposes daily.

Paul knew that the Ephesian believers needed to experience Christ in a profound way to be able to carry through the mandate Christ had given them. So, he nurtured an attitude of prayer in them so that the purpose of God for their lives and the ministry He had for them would be accomplished.

He prayed for them to be strengthened in their inner being, for Christ to dwell in their hearts and for them to be rooted and established in love so that, along with other saints, they would grasp God's purpose.

As you live today, you need all of these things that Paul prayed for to be able to live your life for God. Seek to have them so as to make the required impact with your life.

*QUESTION:* What are the things you run after in your desire to live for God?

*PRAYER:* I pray, dear Lord, that You give me all that is needed to live a life of godliness and make me grasp all the things You have revealed to Your Church, in Jesus name. Amen.

14:“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.

15:I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!

16:So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

17:You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

18:I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

19:Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.

20:Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

FOLLY OF PURSUING EARTHLY WEALTH WITHOUT CHRIST

Today, many Christians have been deceived into choosing the wealth of the world over the riches that can be gotten from Christ Jesus.

The Church in Laodicea was lukewarm about the things of the kingdom of God. The members prided themselves for their wealth, textile industry and other possessions. Those things made them look down on Christ and uplifted themselves.

Jesus rebuke d them and encouraged them to come and get everything they needed from Him so that they could have a better life.

No matter what we gather for ourselves in this world, we will never experience any satisfaction except we are deeply rooted in him (Christ)

7:“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.

8:I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

9:I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

10:Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

11:I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.

12:The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.

STAND WITH GOD EVEN IN THE MIDST OF YOUR TRIALS

God's promises to His children always come to pass, no matter the circumstances in which they find themselves.

Sometimes the situation surrounding your lives may seem too difficult for you bear that you even forget what God has promised you.

The Church at Philadelphia was commended for the fact that, even though it had very little strength, members kept the word of the Lord and did not deny His name. So God set an open door for them as well as promised to keep them from the hour of trial because they had endured patiently.

TOPIC: REMAIN FAITHFUL IN THE MIDST OF PERSECUTION

The Church is passing through difficult times today. As a result, many Christians are asking about the whereabouts of God in the midst of these challenges because, He seems to be silent.

The church at Smyrna struggled against two hostile forces: the Jewish population that strongly opposed Christianity as well as the non-Jewish population that was loyal to Rome and supported emperor-worship.

Persecution and suffering were inevitable in such an environment. Therefore, Jesus drew their attention to the fact that they were certainly going to suffer. But He expected them to be faithful, even to the point of death and He would give them a crown of life.

QUESTION: What attitude have you been adopting in the midst of persecution or suffering?

PRAYER: Grant me the needed grace to continue in the race as a faithful servant as I pass through suffering or persecution. Help me to finish well, in Jesus name. Amen.

PROF HARUNA KUJE AYUBA ASSUMES DUTY AS NEW VICE-CHANCELLOR BINGHAM UNIVERSITY

Prof. Haruna Kuje Ayuba assumed duty as the new Vice-Chancellor of Bingham University on Monday, January 8th, 2024. This follows his recent appointment by the University’s Board of Trustees, following the recommendations of the Governing Council of the University.

Prof. Ayuba, a Professor of Biogeography and Environmental Science started his academic pursuit at Bayero University, Kano. There, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geography, and he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, where he earned a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Geography with a specialization in Biogeography.

Prof. Ayuba has received numerous professional trainings from both national and international institutions such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, International Quality Assurance in Higher Education Cameroon (ICQAHEA), Global University Network Innovation Cameroon (GUNI), German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD), Germany Rectors Conference, Alexander VON Humboldt Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), amongst others.

Prof. Ayuba is a member of professional bodies such as the Association of Nigerian Geographers, the Nigerian Environmental Study/Action Team (NEST), the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Prof. Ayuba was the immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he received a Distinguished Service Award for serving meritoriously. He comes with a wealth of experience.
