Ruminal Bloat Due to Improper Feeding (Husk & Bran)

An animal presented with severe ruminal bloat.
On taking the feeding history, it was found that the animal had been fed large quantities of husk and bran continuously for the past two days.

Probable Cause:
Husk and bran, when given in excess and without proper roughage balance, can disturb normal rumen fermentation. This leads to excess gas production and reduced gas release, resulting in ruminal bloat.
Clinical Observations:
β€’ Distended left abdominal flank
β€’ Discomfort and restlessness
β€’ Reduced appetite
β€’ Signs consistent with ruminal gas accumulation

Discussion:
Sudden dietary changes and overfeeding of by-products like husk and bran can negatively affect rumen health. Proper dietary balance, gradual feed changes, and adequate roughage are essential to prevent such conditions.
