Following the recent warning issued by authorities about potential high rates of flooding in about 30 states including the FCT Abuja in the upcoming rainy season, this article couldn't be more relevant. The above images captured the overflowing drainages clogged with rubbish within some communities in Kaduna metropolis, serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.
It's obvious that improper waste disposal is a global issue, but it becomes even more critical at the moment when heavy rainfall is anticipated. Unfortunately, this is the case for many cities and towns in Nigeria including Kaduna State. The consequences of this improper waste management are not only unsightly and detrimental to the environment, but they can also have severe consequences for our communities.
The warning issued by authorities about the impending heavy rain during this year's season serves as a wake-up call for us to take preventive measures. And one of the most crucial steps we can take is to tackle the habit of dumping refuse in our waterways. Not only will this help lessen the risk of flooding, but it also has a multitude of other benefits.
First and foremost, it helps to keep our waterways clean and free from pollution. As we all know, drainages help to obtain and drain the overflowing water and channel it to main waterways and rivers and it's essential to preserve their quality and keep them clean. Dumping refuse in our waterways not only contaminates the water, but it also harms the aquatic animals and plants that call it home.
Furthermore, proper waste disposal can significantly reduce health risks for our communities. The accumulation of garbage in waterways provides breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests, such as mosquitoes. This poses a significant threat to our health and well-being, as these pests can transmit harmful diseases.
Additionally, when our waterways are clogged with refuse, it limits their capacity to drain excess water during heavy rainfall.
