When Amaka met Daniel, everything felt easy.
Not the fairytale kind of easy.
The normal kind.
The kind where conversations flowed without effort and silence didn’t feel awkward.
They met through a mutual friend. Nothing dramatic.
Daniel was calm, soft-spoken, and attentive.
Amaka liked that he listened more than he talked.
For months, they built a routine.
Morning messages.
Random calls in the afternoon.
Long talks at night about work, family, and future plans that weren’t clearly defined yet—but felt safe to imagine.
Daniel used to ask questions.
“How was your day?”
“Did you eat?”
“Are you tired?”
Amaka noticed those things. She appreciated them.
Then, slowly, things changed.
Not suddenly.
Not enough to raise alarm.
Just small things.
Good morning messages started coming later.
Calls reduced from every night to “when I’m less busy.”
When Amaka talked about her day, Daniel listened—but without the same curiosity.
She told herself she was overthinking.
After all, people get busy.
Work gets stressful.
Life happens.
One evening, Amaka sent a message:
“Is everything okay with us?”
Daniel replied:
“Yeah, we’re fine. Why?”
She typed… deleted… typed again.
“Just checking.”
He reacted with a thumbs-up 👍🏽
That night, Amaka stared at her phone longer than usual.
Nothing was wrong.
But nothing felt right either.
And that was the beginning.
