🇿🇦 Josia Thugwane became South Africa’s first black gold medalist 20 years ago at the 1996 Atlanta Games, stunningly winning the marathon five months after being shot in the face during a carjacking.

Born on 22 April 1971 in the small town of Bethal, in eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga), Josiah Thugwane did not receive much education while he was growing up. He learned to read and write after winning his Gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic. He started as a local soccer player and in 1990 started running marathons to support his poor family.

He won the South African trials for the Olympic Games in 1996 and was selected to represent South Africa at the Atlanta Olympics in the United States, the first South African participation since the end of the international sports boycott.

From 1996 to 2002 Thugwane regularly took part in national and international marathons and half marathons. In 1997 he won the Fukuoka Marathon, claiming a personal best, national record and event record all at the same time with his 2:07:28 run. In the same year he was crowned South Africa's Sportsman of the Year.

He became the third man to defend his marathon title at the Sydney Olympics, Australia, in 2000. However, he was not successful.

Thugwane lives in Johannesburg with his wife and four children.

🇦🇴 Angola will launch the export of domestically produced salt to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 🇨🇩 which will marking a strategic step in its push to diversify exports and strengthen regional trade ties.

The move follows the signing of a cross-border trade agreement in Mbanza Kongo, Zaire Province’s capital.

Nercia Tailer, Commercial Director of Salinas Calombolo, the Benguela-based company behind the initiative, confirmed that production capacity will be increased to meet local and external market demand.

Salinas Calombolo currently produces about 200,000 tonnes of salt per month, with a stockpile of 80,000 tonnes specifically allocated for exports.

The salt export deal represents a milestone in Angola’s broader ambition to expand its non-oil exports, strengthen cross-border trade with the DRC, and unlock new economic opportunities for local producers.

Burna Boy has apologised for his comments criticising Afrobeats music, saying that they stemmed from a place of unhappiness.

The initial comments divided fan opinion back in 2023, when the Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer spoke to Zane Lowe for Apple Music, and shared that he thought the Afrobeats genre as a whole was devoid of any deeper meaning.

“Half of them, [actually,] 90 per cent of them, have almost no real-life experiences that they can understand,” he claimed. “That’s why you hear most Nigerian music, African Music, or Afrobeats, as people call it, is mostly about nothing, literally nothing.”

“There is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything. It’s just a great time, an amazing time,” he added. “But at the end of the day, life isn’t an amazing time.”

Now, two years on, the artist –who became the first African artist to headline a stadium show in the UK in 2023 – has looked back at his comments and said that it came in retaliation for feeling like he was being confined to one genre.

“I didn’t understand why people wanted my music to be inside one box,” he said when speaking to BBC 1Xtra’s Eddie Kadi, in a new interview.

Burna says he was "in a dark place mentally" when he made the comments.

"I wasn't the happiest man in the world," he says

He says the "division" his words caused helped him to "come to terms" with his opinion.

"I got the point of the Afrobeats tag in that moment," he says.

"I totally get it and I apologise for that confusion."

"I learnt to embrace the fact that I will always be different," he says.

"I'm not going to be the favourite but I'm going to be the best."

Over 100 years later, France has passed a law to return the Djidji Ayokwe, a sacred Ivorian drum seized by colonial troops in 1916. For generations, this drum served as a powerful voice for the Ebrie people, used to send royal decrees and warn neighboring villages of danger. Since its looting, it has remained in a Paris museum, displayed as a piece of French-owned “heritage.” Now, after decades of silence and delay, the French government has agreed to send it back.

But here’s the question:

Should it really take over 100 years and a law to return what was stolen?

🇷🇼 Rwanda has taken a decisive leap toward becoming a key player in the global critical minerals market following the announcement of a “world-class” lithium discovery by Aterian Plc.

The find marks a significant milestone for the East African nation’s ambitions to position itself within the booming lithium supply chain that fuels electric vehicles, batteries, and the green energy transition.

The landmark discovery is part of an active joint venture between Aterian Plc, Rio Tinto Mining and Exploration Ltd, and Kinunga Mining Ltd. Since September 2024, the partners have been drilling across a 2,750-hectare permit in Rwanda’s Southern Province.

The site boasts 19 lithium-rich pegmatite zones, alongside tantalum and cesium deposits—further boosting the area’s critical mineral potential.

Charles Bray, Executive Chairman of Aterian Plc, described the find as “world-class” but cautioned that further exploration is needed to determine the true scale and commercial viability of the deposit. The next phases will focus on testing drill depth, continuity, and potential cost-effectiveness of extraction.

For Rwanda, this discovery offers a chance to diversify its mining sector and add value locally through processing and technology transfer.

As global demand for lithium soars amid the clean energy push, Rwanda’s emerging reserves would not only drive foreign investment but also support its wider economic transformation agenda.

🇳🇬 Nigerian doctor in the United States, Dr. Timileyin Oluseyi, has achieved a milestone that has stirred waves of pride across Nigeria and the global Black community.

In a historic moment at his medical residency graduation, Oluseyi won all eight of the program’s top awards; an unprecedented feat in the institution’s history.

Not only is he the first Black resident to sweep the awards, it is reported he also outperformed every one of his peers across all key metrics.

In a viral video, the program’s director and department chairman were seen honoring him with a traditional Yoruba gesture: prostrating flat on the floor.

The act, rooted in Yoruba culture as a symbol of deep respect, was reportedly the result of deliberate research by the institution’s leadership.

According to a faculty member, “The chairman said, ‘We’ve never seen anything like this. He raised the bar for this program forever.’

Angola has struck one of its largest offshore gas discoveries in the Kwanza Basin, signaling a new chapter for its energy sector. Made by Azule Energy, a BP and Eni partnership, the find is set to boost gas reserves and open fresh opportunities for exports and local industry.
