The Premier League has confirmed that the traditional Boxing Day fixture list in English football has been reduced to just one match on 26 December 2025.

According to BBC Sports on Friday, as a result of the new development, Manchester United vs. Newcastle United will be the only match to feature on Boxing Day due to the expansion of European club competitions.

UEFA announced on Friday that Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena is the only candidate for the 2028 Champions League final, while both Wembley and the renovated Camp Nou are competing for the 2029 final.

Munich was the only city that stepped forward for the 2028 final after hosting it in 2025 when Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Inter Milan 5-0.

Munich also hosted the elite European club final in 1979, 1993, and 1997 in the Olympic Stadium and in 2012 and 2025 at the Allianz Arena.

This season, the final is scheduled for the Puskas Arena in Budapest, while the Metropolitano in Madrid will host in 2027.

UEFA will decide between London and Barcelona for the 2029 final in September 2026.

Lionel Messi has agreed a contract extension with Inter Miami which will see the Argentine superstar remain in Major League Soccer until the end of the 2028 season, the club confirmed on Thursday.

Inter Miami’s X feed posted a video of Messi signing a contract sitting at a table in the middle of the club’s new Freedom Park stadium, which is under construction, with the simple caption: “He’s Home.”

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park,” Messi, 38, said in a club statement.

Award winners have emerged as the curtains fall on the FIFA U20 World Cup held in Chile.

Morocco finished winner of the tournament – first of its kind in their history – after they disposed Argentina by two goals to nil courtesy of a brilliant brace from teenage sensation, Mohamed Zabiri.

They now become the second African nation after Ghana to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2009.

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has advised manager Arne Slot to drop Mohamed Salah for their next two matches
Carragher was reacting to the Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. It was Liverpool’s fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

Carragher believes that Salah’s poor form is part of the issues affecting the team’s performances.

Slot’s men face Frankfurt in the Champions League in midweek, before travelling to Brentford in the league.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “Liverpool have got two away games – in the Champions League at Frankfurt and then they go to Brentford. I don’t think Salah should start both of those games.
“He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool will be on top, around the edge of the box and more often than not he scores in those situations today. But I do think in the away games and helping your full-back, I don’t think Salah should be starting every game right now, certainly away from home, with the form he’s in.”
