UBEC, SUBEB and UNICEF Launch School Enrolment Drive in Rano, Kano State
The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has launched a major campaign to boost school enrolment in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State.
The flag-off took place at Lausu Primary School, Rano, with dignitaries from federal, state, and community levels in attendance.
Speaking at the event, UBEC Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Garba — represented by Mr. Razaq Olajuwon Akinyemi from UBEC’s Technical Department — described the campaign as a critical step toward ensuring that every Nigerian child of school age has access to primary education, continues through the system, and successfully graduates. She highlighted UBEC’s ongoing efforts to improve teaching conditions through the provision of learning materials, teacher training, and strengthened community involvement via School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs).
She stressed the need to address challenges faced by both boys and girls, including street hawking, the almajiri system, and barriers confronting children with special needs, urging full stakeholder participation to tackle these issues.
Also speaking, Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad — represented by Bello Rabe, Director of Quality Assurance at the Federal Ministry of Education — reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s education sector.
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Gwani Ali Haruna Makoda, praised the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. He noted the state government’s investments in new classrooms, rehabilitation of dilapidated structures, and increased distribution of school uniforms compared to last year. He further directed school heads and relevant stakeholders to ensure every child of school age in Kano is enrolled within the next 30 days in line with the 2025/2026 national education plan.
On behalf of Northern State UBEC Boards, Malam Yusuf Kabir, Executive Chairman of Kano SUBEB, appealed to traditional rulers, clerics, community leaders, and education committees to give full backing to the campaign. He emphasised that enrolling a child in school is the most valuable investment a parent can make.
UNICEF Kano Field Office Chief, Rahama Farah — represented by Michael Banda — stressed that community engagement is essential not only to enrol children but also to keep them in school until graduation.
The Emir of Rano, Alhaji Muhammad Umar Isah, urged parents to embrace the initiative and directed district and ward leaders in his domain to actively support the enrolment drive.
The event concluded with the distribution of school bags, uniforms, and books to new Primary 1 pupils at Lausu Primary School, Rano.
