CONDEMNATION OF THE UROMI MASSACRE AND THE DANGERS OF JUNGLE JUSTICE

I strongly and unequivocally condemn the gruesome and senseless massacre of sixteen innocent citizens in Uromi, Edo State. These men, Hausa hunters traveling for the Sallah celebration, met their untimely death not at the hands of criminals but at the hands of their fellow citizens—victims of fear, paranoia, and the tragic consequences of jungle justice.

This horrific incident exposes the deep-seated insecurity that plagues our nation, where ordinary Nigerians live in constant fear and where the failure of the security agencies has led to widespread lawlessness.

However, no amount of fear justifies the barbaric actions of the mob that took the lives of these innocent men in such a brutal and inhumane manner.

Jungle justice is a dangerous and unlawful practice that has no place in any civilized society. The rule of law is the foundation of justice, and every citizen is entitled to due process, no matter the suspicions or accusations against them. When vigilantes and ordinary citizens take the law into their own hands—acting as accusers, judges, and executioners—the result is a miscarriage of justice, often with fatal and irreversible consequences.

I call on the Nigerian security agencies to immediately launch a complete and thorough investigation into this heinous act. Every single perpetrator of this crime must be identified, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There can be no impunity for murder. Justice must not only be done, but it must be seen to be done to prevent further descent into lawlessness.

To the families of the victims, I extend my deepest condolences. This tragedy should be a wake-up call to all Nigerians and the authorities. We must work collectively to restore law and order, combat insecurity, and ensure that no citizen, regardless of ethnicity or background, becomes the next victim of mob violence.

Enough is enough! Jungle justice must end. The time
