🌍 International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – 9 August 2026
On behalf of the Nigeria Indigenous People and Pastoralists Forum (NIPPF), we proudly join Indigenous Peoples and communities around the world in commemorating the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
This day is an important opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions, traditional knowledge, cultural heritage, and stewardship of Indigenous Peoples and Pastoralist communities in protecting our lands, biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural resources.
In Nigeria, Indigenous and Pastoralist communities continue to play a vital role in sustainable land management, conservation of biodiversity, climate resilience, food security, and the preservation of traditional knowledge. Yet, many communities continue to face challenges related to land degradation, climate change, insecurity, displacement, limited access to basic services, and meaningful participation in decision-making processes.
As NIPPF, we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying the voices of Indigenous Peoples and Pastoralists, protecting their rights and livelihoods, promoting inclusive climate and environmental action, and ensuring that traditional knowledge and community leadership are recognized in national, regional, and global policy processes.
We call on governments, development partners, civil society, international organizations, and all stakeholders to strengthen meaningful participation and partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and Pastoralist communities—not merely as beneficiaries, but as rights-holders, knowledge-holders, and essential partners in building a resilient and sustainable future.

🌍 Our communities are part of the solution.
🤝 Our voices must be heard.
