THE JOURNEY OF LIFE (Part 4)
The following morning, the entire community of Amator woke up to the painful cries and wailing of Ada and Obele.
The two girls were bleeding profusely.
When the Chief discovered that the pregnancies had been lost, he immediately summoned the women of the palace to care for them while he called together his council of elders to investigate what had happened.
By this time, Ada and Obele had already spent two long years away from home.
The investigation dragged on for months and eventually stretched into more than a year. Yet nothing could be proven.
Ada had carefully covered every trace of what they had done.
Life in Amator continued, but the girls no longer lived with peace in their hearts. Though they had survived many dangers, the emotional wounds they carried within were far deeper than anything visible to the eyes.
Then one early morning, without warning, they were suddenly awakened from sleep.
“Prepare yourselves,” one of the palace guards told them. “You are going home.”
The girls were stunned.
Before they departed, they were given a stern warning never to speak about their ordeal in Amator. They were told that silence was the price of their survival.
By now, the innocent girls who had once left home full of pride and youthful exhubearance had transformed completely.
Life had hardened them.
Pain had matured them.
And survival had taught them lessons no child should ever have to learn.
Many who embarked on such journeys never returned alive.
Ada and Obele considered themselves fortunate simply to still be breathing.
For two days and two nights, warriors escorted them through a shorter forest path until they finally reached a familiar route leading toward their hometown.
One reason the people of Amator eventually allowed the girls to leave was because they had failed to prove that the pregnancies had been deliberately terminated. Within the beliefs of the community, such an act was considered a terrible abomination.
Had they been found guilty, their fate would have been far more terrible.
Very early one morning, as Mr. Jones, the town councillor, prepared to leave for work, he noticed two strange-looking young women walking slowly along the roadside.
Something about them felt familiar.
Ada and Obele recognized him immediately, but years of fear and suffering had changed them deeply.
The once celebrated pride of the town had become shadows of themselves.
Mr. Jones stopped and stared at them carefully.
“You two… your faces look familiar,” he said slowly. “Do I know you from somewhere?”
Ada lowered her face and replied softly,
“You do not know us, sir. Please let us continue on our way.”
But as she spoke, tears filled her eyes.
Suddenly, both girls broke down crying uncontrollably.
Mr. Jones froze.
He recognized the voices instantly.
The entire town had long believed the girls were dead. According to tradition, no maiden who failed to return after four days was ever expected to be seen alive again.
His heart began to race.
Could these truly be Ada and Obele?
Unable to believe his own eyes, he decided to test what he feared.
Nearby was a heap of sand. Quickly, he scooped some into his hands and poured it upon them. In certain traditions, it was believed that ghosts could not withstand such an act.
But the girls remained standing there, trembling and sobbing.
Mr. Jones stepped back in shock.
Then he shouted loudly.
“ADA! OBELE! IS IT REALLY YOU?”
The girls nodded slowly through tears.
Within moments, people began rushing toward the scene from every direction.
When Ada’s mother heard the news that her daughter had returned alive, she ran toward the gathering crowd. But the moment she saw Ada standing there worn, broken, and transformed by suffering, she collapsed to the ground in shock.
Soon the entire town fell into confusion.
Some cried.
Some shouted.
Some rejoiced.
Others stood speechless in disbelief.
For the daughters who had once left home in beauty and pride had returned carrying the unbearable weight of a journey that changed them forever...
Life is a vehicle, the destination is unknown".
