PRESIDENT TINUBU COMMENDS THE NAVY FOR SEVEN DECADES OF PROVIDING MARITIME SECURITY, COMMISSIONS THREE VESSELS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday, commended the Nigerian Navy for its seven decades of commitment and sacrifice in safeguarding Nigeria's maritime domain and protecting the nation's economic interests.

He spoke at the 2026 International Fleet Review held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront, Lagos, as part of events to commemorate the Navy’s 70th Anniversary. President Tinubu also commissioned three Nigerian Naval vessels: NNS Oloibiri, NNS Mambila, and NNS Gurara.

As reviewing officer at the event, President Tinubu praised the Navy’s achievements in combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, maritime smuggling, and other transnational crimes in the Gulf of Guinea.

He specifically lauded the Navy’s sustained efforts against crude oil theft and maritime criminality, noting that these operations have significantly boosted oil production, improved national revenue, and strengthened investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

"Beyond the maritime domain, I also commend the Nigerian Navy for its contributions to counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations across the country. The courage and professionalism demonstrated by the Special Boat Service in executing complex missions are truly commendable.

"More so, with the recent induction of the Nigerian Navy Marines into operational theatres, I am confident that even greater successes will be recorded. Indeed, the Nigerian Navy has become an indispensable pillar of both national and regional security,’’ the President said.

President Tinubu thanked friendly nations and foreign navies for attending the International Fleet Review, describing the event as a testament to growing international cooperation for maritime security and collective prosperity.

He noted that the Nigerian Navy has evolved into a formidable maritime force whose operational successes have significantly enhanced security within Nigeria’s territorial waters and contributed to regional and international maritime stability.

"Nigeria’s maritime domain, endowed with immense natural wealth, remains a vital pillar of our national economy, serving as a major source of foreign exchange and a critical artery for global trade. I commend the Nigerian Navy for its steadfast guardianship of this strategic space.

"Through the effective integration of surveillance systems, rapid response mechanisms and robust enforcement operations, you have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and associated maritime crimes. These achievements have enhanced the security of our littoral communities and contributed to increased oil production, thereby supporting national economic growth.

"Your theme for this milestone event, 'Seven Decades of Operational Excellence,' is not merely a slogan, but a proven reality. As we look to the future, I am confident that the Nigerian Navy will sustain this momentum and continue to secure the maritime environment as a thriving engine of our blue economy,’’ he said.

President Tinubu further acknowledged the Navy’s collaboration with other security agencies, regional partners, and international allies in ensuring the Gulf of Guinea remains safer for commercial shipping and maritime activities.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Navy’s operational capabilities through continued investment in modern platforms, advanced technology, personnel welfare, training, and capacity development.

The President congratulated the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, officers, ratings, veterans, and families of Nigerian Navy personnel on this historic milestone, urging them to remain steadfast in their commitment to duty, patriotism, and service to the nation.

Vice Admiral Abbas noted that the Navy’s successes in recent years were made possible by strategic investments, policy support, and strong leadership from the President.

He highlighted that the acquisition of modern platforms, enhanced surveillance capabilities, and sustained collaboration among security agencies have significantly strengthened Nigeria’s maritime security architecture.

He added that these interventions have enabled the Nigerian Navy to intensify efforts against piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, sea robbery, and other transnational maritime crimes within the Gulf of Guinea.

Vice Admiral Abbas reaffirmed the loyalty and commitment of officers and ratings to the Constitution and the President, pledging that the Service would remain vigilant and resolute in defending Nigeria’s maritime domain against all threats.

He also commended the sacrifices of naval personnel, past and present, whose dedication has shaped the Nigerian Navy into a formidable force.

He assured Nigerians that the Service would continue to leverage technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships to secure the nation's maritime environment and sustain the gains already made in combating maritime crime.

Dignitaries present included former Governor of Ogun State and Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Sen. Gbenga Daniel (representing the Senate President); Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Kwara State Governor and Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq; Chairman, House Committee on Navy, Yusuf Gagdi; Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd); Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle; and National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Among other dignitaries were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Kennedy Aneke; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Lieutenant General Emmanuel Parker Undiandeye; and Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu.

Chiefs of Naval Staff from other Gulf of Guinea countries—Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea—as well as delegations from European countries and former Service Chiefs, also attended.

Dikko Umaru Radda and the Rebirth of Katsina: Three Years of Courage, Compassion and Transformational Leadership

By Musa Abdullahi Sufi

History often remembers leaders not merely for occupying public office, but for the difference they make in the lives of ordinary people. While some administrations are measured by political rhetoric, others are remembered for tangible results, institutional reforms, and the hope they inspire among citizens. As Governor Dikko Umaru Radda marks three years in office, his administration presents a compelling case study of visionary leadership, courageous governance, and people-centered development.

When Governor Radda assumed office in May 2023, Katsina State faced enormous challenges. Insecurity threatened communities, thousands of young people struggled with unemployment, schools lacked sufficient teachers, healthcare facilities were overstretched, infrastructure deficits persisted, and public confidence in government required renewal.

Three years later, Katsina is witnessing a transformation that is gradually redefining the state’s development trajectory. Though challenges remain, there is growing evidence that the government has moved beyond managing problems to implementing long-term solutions. Across villages, towns, schools, hospitals, farms and communities, citizens are increasingly experiencing the impact of governance.

What distinguishes Governor Radda’s leadership is not simply the projects executed but the philosophy behind them. His administration has consistently demonstrated that governance must be about improving lives, creating opportunities, and building institutions that endure beyond political tenures.

Leadership Built on Purpose and Service

One of Governor Radda’s most admirable qualities is his unwavering focus on governance. At a time when many public officials are distracted by politics and personal interests, he has remained largely committed to service delivery, accountability and development.

His leadership style reflects humility, accessibility, discipline and strategic thinking. Drawing from his experience as a development expert and former Director-General of SMEDAN, he brought into government a practical understanding of economic growth, youth empowerment and institutional reform.

Rather than relying on short-term interventions, Governor Radda adopted a comprehensive development agenda focused on security, education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, economic growth, youth development and public sector reform.

This approach has allowed the administration to pursue sustainable transformation rather than temporary fixes.

Restoring Security and Hope

No challenge has tested the administration more than insecurity. For years, many communities across Katsina suffered from bandit attacks, displacement and economic disruptions.

Governor Radda inherited a difficult situation that required courage, persistence and innovation. His administration adopted both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to security. While strengthening collaboration with security agencies, the government also invested in intelligence gathering, community engagement, rehabilitation programmes and economic empowerment initiatives.

Today, many communities that once lived in fear are gradually returning to normalcy. Farmers are returning to their farms. Markets are reopening. Economic activities are improving.

Security challenges have not completely disappeared, but significant progress has been made in restoring confidence and rebuilding hope among citizens. Perhaps more importantly, Governor Radda has shown that leadership means confronting difficult realities rather than avoiding them.

Education: Investing in the Future

Few sectors better reflect Governor Radda’s vision than education. Recognizing that education remains the greatest weapon against poverty and underdevelopment, his administration launched one of the most ambitious educational transformation programmes in Katsina’s history.

Over ₦120 billion has been committed to education. Hundreds of schools have been constructed, renovated and upgraded. More than 7,000 teachers have been recruited to address critical shortages across public schools. Yet the administration’s educational revolution extends beyond infrastructure.

The establishment of Smart Schools and Model Schools equipped with artificial intelligence laboratories, robotics centres, digital learning facilities and internet connectivity demonstrates a commitment to preparing Katsina’s children for the future economy.

For the child in a rural community, these investments send a powerful message: where one is born should not determine how far one can go in life.

The administration has also expanded scholarship opportunities, strengthened STEM education, supported digital literacy programmes and created pathways for students to compete globally.

In many ways, Governor Radda is not simply building schools; he is building the next generation of leaders, innovators and problem-solvers.

Healthcare: Protecting Human Life and Dignity

A government’s true commitment to its people is often measured by the quality of healthcare available to the most vulnerable.

Governor Radda’s healthcare reforms demonstrate a deep understanding that health is not a luxury but a fundamental human right.

Across the state, primary healthcare facilities have been renovated and upgraded. New healthcare workers have been recruited through transparent and merit-based processes. Hospitals have received modern equipment and expanded capacity.

The transformation of the dialysis centre at General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital has become a lifeline for patients requiring kidney care. The ongoing development of a world-class imaging and diagnostic centre promises to position Katsina as a leading healthcare destination in Northern Nigeria.

Beyond infrastructure, these investments translate into lives saved, mothers protected, children vaccinated and communities strengthened. For countless families, these reforms represent the difference between despair and hope.

Agriculture as a Tool for Prosperity

Governor Radda understands that agriculture remains the backbone of Katsina’s economy. Rather than treating agriculture as a traditional activity, his administration has transformed it into a strategic development priority.

The establishment of the Agricultural Mechanisation Centre, deployment of tractors and harvesters, expansion of extension services and support for dry-season farming have improved productivity and strengthened food security.

The innovative decision to assemble agricultural machinery locally has not only reduced costs but also created jobs and technical skills for young people.

Through agriculture, the administration is simultaneously addressing food production, poverty reduction, youth employment and security challenges.

This integrated approach reflects a leader who understands that development problems require interconnected solutions.

Community Development Programme: Giving Power Back to the People

Perhaps one of the most innovative governance initiatives introduced by Governor Radda is the Community Development Programme (CDP). The programme represents a significant shift from traditional governance models.

Instead of imposing development priorities from government offices, communities are empowered to identify their own needs, participate in planning and monitor project implementation. This approach strengthens accountability, promotes ownership and ensures that development reflects local realities.

The CDP has become a model of participatory governance that demonstrates how citizens can become active partners in development rather than passive recipients of government programmes. In many respects, the programme embodies Governor Radda’s belief that sustainable development must be community-driven.

Empowering Young People to Lead

One of the defining features of Governor Radda’s administration is his commitment to youth inclusion.

Across government institutions, young professionals have been given opportunities to contribute ideas, provide leadership and participate in decision-making. This deliberate investment in young people reflects confidence in the abilities of the next generation.

Beyond appointments, the administration has implemented youth empowerment programmes focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, skills development, digital technology and access to finance.

Thousands of young people have benefited from training opportunities, business support initiatives and employment programmes. Governor Radda understands that empowering young people is not charity, it is an investment in the future stability and prosperity of society.

Infrastructure, Energy and Digital Transformation

The administration’s achievements extend to infrastructure development, renewable energy and digital governance.

Road networks are expanding. Urban renewal projects are transforming communities. Solar-powered infrastructure is bringing reliable energy to critical public institutions.

Through digital governance reforms, government operations have become more transparent and efficient.

Perhaps the most remarkable evidence of this transformation is the dramatic increase in internally generated revenue, which has reportedly grown from approximately ₦400 million monthly to over ₦3 billion monthly.

This growth demonstrates what is possible when technology, accountability and prudent management work together. The resources generated today will help finance the development projects of tomorrow.

Leadership in the Face of Adversity

Great leaders are often forged during difficult times. Governor Radda’s journey has not been without obstacles. Insecurity, economic uncertainty, climate-related challenges and rising public expectations have all tested his administration.

Yet through resilience, consistency and faith, he has continued to move forward. Many citizens admire not only what he has achieved but also how he has achieved it with humility, determination and an unwavering belief that government exists to serve the people.

His leadership reminds us that progress is not measured by the absence of challenges but by the courage to confront them.

Why Many Believe Continuity Matters

As discussions about the future unfold, many observers believe the administration has laid a strong foundation that deserves continuity.l

The educational reforms are still expanding. Healthcare investments are still maturing. Agricultural modernization is gaining momentum. Infrastructure projects continue to open new opportunities. Community development initiatives are strengthening local governance. Youth empowerment programmes are creating future leaders.

The argument for continuity is therefore not merely political; it is developmental. Many citizens believe that sustaining the momentum of ongoing reforms would accelerate the transformation already underway.

A Legacy in the Making

Three years into his administration, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has demonstrated that leadership can be purposeful, compassionate and transformative.

His achievements are visible not only in statistics but in the lives of teachers who gained employment, patients receiving better healthcare, farmers accessing mechanized agriculture, students learning in modern classrooms, youths finding opportunities, and communities participating directly in governance.

The story of Katsina today is not merely about projects and programmes. It is about a renewed sense of possibility. It is about a government striving to place people at the centre of development. And it is about leadership that listens, learns and acts.

As Katsina reflects on three years of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s administration, many citizens see not only the achievements of the present but also the promise of an even brighter future.

Indeed, history may ultimately remember these years as the period when Katsina began a remarkable journey of renewal, guided by a leader whose vision, courage and commitment to service helped restore hope and redefine what is possible.

Katsina Amirul Hajj Launches Distribution of Governor Radda's Sallah Gift to Pilgrims

The Amirul Hajj and Leader of the Katsina State 2026 Hajj Delegation, Barrister Ahmad Usman El-Marzuq, on Saturday, May 30, 2026, flagged off the distribution of the Sallah gift approved by the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, for pilgrims from the state currently performing the 2026 Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The gesture involves the payment of 300 Saudi Riyals to each of the 2,035 Katsina State pilgrims as a Sallah gift from the Governor. In addition, the Amirul Hajj announced the refund of 100 Saudi Riyals to each pilgrim, representing the balance from their Basic Travelling Allowance (BTA).

Flagging off the exercise, Barrister El-Marzuq described the payments as another palliative by Governor Radda aimed at easing the welfare challenges of pilgrims and enabling them to perform their religious obligations with greater comfort and peace of mind.

He noted that the gesture came in addition to the Governor's earlier intervention through the payment of Hadaya on behalf of all Katsina State pilgrims.

The Amirul Hajj commended Governor Radda for his continued commitment to the welfare of pilgrims and urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture by praying for peace, stability, and prosperity in Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Executive Director of the Katsina State Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Yunusa Abdullahi Dank**a, said the gathering was convened specifically to fulfill the Governor's promise to the pilgrims through the distribution of the approved funds.

Also speaking, the Director of Administration and Finance of the Katsina State Pilgrims Welfare Board and District Head of Musawa, Alhaji Sagir Abdullahi Inde, explained that the payment process had been carefully organized into groups to ensure efficiency and avoid unnecessary delays.

He informed the pilgrims that each beneficiary would receive payment through the same official who had earlier issued their travel documents, thereby facilitating easy identification and accountability.

The payment exercise was supervised by members of the Katsina State Hajj Delegation, who were deployed across the various pilgrim groups drawn from the Funtua, Daura, Katsina and Headquarters zones.

Speaking on behalf of the pilgrims, several beneficiaries expressed appreciation to Governor Radda for the generous gesture and offered prayers for Allah's continued guidance, protection and blessings upon him and the people of Katsina State.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by members of the 2026 Hajj Delegation, members of the Board and Management of the Katsina State Pilgrims Welfare Board, as well as members of the Katsina State House of Assembly.
