NSUK Alumni Association Condemns Mockery of PhD Graduates; Warns Members Against Self-Sabotage

The leadership of the Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) Alumni Association, under Barr. Nuhu J. Egya, Notary Public, has observed with grave concern the wave of derision and thinly veiled mockery that trailed the record number of PhD graduates unveiled at the just-concluded 8th Combined Convocation and 25th Anniversary of our great institution.

Ordinarily, such a landmark academic milestone should be a collective badge of honor for every Alumnus and for Nasarawa State at large. To have produced doctoral graduates in such magnitude, within just over two decades of existence, is a testament to NSUK’s pedigree as a center of postgraduate excellence. Indeed, no state university in Northern Nigeria matches our record.

Regrettably, it is our very own graduates who have chosen to become willing foot soldiers in this campaign of calumny, lending their voices to blackmailers intent on disparaging the integrity of their alma mater. This is not criticism; it is academic self-immolation.

The NSUK Alumni Association hereby cautions all members who engage in open disparagement of our hardworking PhD graduates, whether in public discourse or across social media platforms, to desist forthwith. If you believe earning a PhD in a rigorously competitive academic environment like NSUK is a stroll in the park, we challenge you: enroll, defend a thesis, and then speak. You will quickly appreciate the years of toil, sleepless nights, and personal sacrifice embedded in that title.

Let us be guided by the wisdom of our forebears: _“He who joins outsiders to say his mother is a bad cook will eat his meals alone.”_ When you help the world spit on your own roof, do not complain when the rain soaks you. No serious community thrives by de-marketing its brightest minds.

The Association will not fold its arms while a few disgruntled voices attempt to rewrite our success story into a narrative of mediocrity. We stand firmly with every NSUK PhD holder whose scholarship has elevated the university’s standing nationally and internationally.

Going forward, we urge all Alumni to be ambassadors, not adversaries, of the brand that produced them. Let us protect the house that gave us a name, for when the foundation is ridiculed, the entire structure trembles.

“When Applause Deceives”: Prof. Dandaura Unmasks Power, Perception, and Nigeria’s Reputation War at NSUK’s 59th Inaugural

Nasarawa State University, Keffi, on April 15, hosted its 59th inaugural lecture, delivered by Professor Emmanuel S. Dandaura, a Professor of Strategic and Development Communication from the Faculty of Arts, Department of Theatre and Cultural Studies. The lecture, titled “When Applause Lies: Communication, Power, and the War Between Reputation and Perception in Nigeria,” took place at the university’s Assembly Hall.

The event attracted distinguished dignitaries from academia, political and traditional institutions, members of the university community, students, as well as a strong delegation from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule, Visitor to the University, expressed delight at the lecture, highlighting the critical importance of the topic in reshaping society’s moral values. He commended Professor Dandaura for his insightful presentation and emphasized the damaging effects of misinformation, fake news, and negative influence. He urged citizens to safeguard their reputations through integrity, impactful leadership, and justice.

Governor Sule also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the growth and development of the institution. He concluded with a pledge of ₦10 million in support of the inaugural lecturer.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman in her welcome remarks commended the Inaugural Lecture Committee for their dedication to the success of the programme.

She noted that the theme of the lecture resonates strongly within contemporary society, emphasizing that reputation and perception are closely intertwined with communication and power, particularly within Nigeria’s complex socio-political landscape.

According to her, understanding these dynamics is essential for growth in a diverse society, as communication can either serve as a tool for development or a source of conflict.

The Vice-Chancellor further observed that individuals in positions of authority often shape communication channels, influencing what is said, heard, and perceived sometimes resulting in skewed narratives. She expressed confidence that the lecture would be both educative and intellectually enriching, noting that students and attendees stood to benefit immensely from the scholar’s depth of experience and knowledge.

In his presentation, Professor Dandaura explained that the lecture addresses a fundamental proposition concerning Nigeria’s imbalance between communication and perception. According to him, legitimacy does not stem from how well a system presents itself, but from how consistently it performs. While communication may shape perception, he stressed that only lived experience sustains trust.

The professor further noted that applause is not always a reflection of truth, as it can be generated, amplified, and managed often reflecting attention without conviction and visibility without trust. “Any nation that mistakes applause for belief is standing on dangerously unstable ground,” he stated, urging society to resist the temptation to chase applause and instead commit to earning genuine trust.
“Communication determines who tells the story of society. If power alone controls the narrative, applause will dominate perception,” he added.

He concluded by advocating discipline, accountability, and a renewed respect for the relationship between words and outcomes, emphasizing that communication should follow performance rather than precede it.

In separate goodwill messages, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Adam A. Binchi; the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr. Ike Neliaku; and a representative of the Dandaura family, Maiwazi Dandaura, congratulated the lecturer on his academic milestone. They also commended Nasarawa State University and the Mada community for producing such an accomplished and impactful scholar, praising his contributions to academic excellence and national development.

Highlights of the event included musical and dance performances by various cultural troupes, as well as the presentation of an award for outstanding contributions to knowledge by the Governor. The ceremony concluded with group photographs to commemorate the occasion.

Governor Sule Rewards Excellence with ₦44 Million as NSUK Graduates 32,884 Students at Historic 8th Convocation Ceremony & Silver Jubilee Anniversary

Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) recorded a landmark moment in its history from 8th–11th April, 2026, as it held its 8th Combined Convocation Ceremony alongside its Silver Jubilee Anniversary, marking 25 years of academic excellence and institutional growth.

The four-day celebration transformed the university into a vibrant hub of intellectual engagement and cultural prestige, attracting top government officials, diplomats, traditional rulers, alumni, and development partners. The milestone event celebrated the university’s remarkable journey since its establishment in 2001. This has reaffirmed NSUK’s status as one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned institutions.

The convocation ceremony, held on Saturday, 11th April, witnessed the graduation of 32,884 students across three academic sessions. Among them were 82 first-class honours graduates from 11 faculties, reflecting the institution’s expanding academic strength, which now spans above 300 programmes across both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor ’adatu Hassan Liman, described the ceremony as historic, noting that it uniquely combined multiple graduating sets while commemorating the university’s Silver Jubilee.

A major highlight of the event was the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on distinguished global figures, including the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, and the President of the Nigerian-Arabian Chamber of Commerce, UAE, Dr. Mahmood Ahmadu, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to leadership, industry, and societal development.

The intellectual tone of the celebration was further enriched by two landmark lectures. Renowned Kenyan scholar, Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba delivered the Convocation Lecture titled “Universities Leadership of African Renaissance: Re-Imagining Knowledge for Development in the 21st Century.” Earlier, Engr. Dr. Umar Buba Bindir presented the Silver Jubilee Lecture on “Knowledge-to-Wealth Creation: Pathway for Revitalising Nigerian Tertiary Education,” urging Nigerian universities to translate research into practical solutions for national development.

The Visitor to the University, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, played a pivotal role throughout the celebrations. In a major show of support for academic excellence, he announced cash rewards of ₦500,000 for each of the 82 first-class graduates and ₦1 million for each of the three best graduating students, totaling ₦44 million.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining high standards in teaching, learning, and research.

The Chancellor of the University, HRH Alh. Shehu Chindo Yamusa III, PhD, CON, charged the graduates to see their certificates as a call to service. He emphasized integrity, innovation, and discipline, urging them to contribute meaningfully to national development while calling for increased investment in education and research.

The convocation also witnessed remarkable goodwill from distinguished alumni and stakeholders. The Governor of Sokoto State, His Excellency, Ahmad Aliyu, through a representative, pledged the donation of ₦25 million and committed to fully funding the construction of an International Capital Market structure valued at ₦126 million. Similarly, the Taraba State Governor, His Excellency, Agbu Kefas, donated ₦25 million to support institutional development.

In addition, Dr. Mahmood Ahmadu announced a grant of ₦100,000 to each first-class graduate, pledged to establish an ICT Innovation Hub, and offered employment opportunities to at least 50 graduates within the ICT sector.

Further strengthening the university’s future outlook, Hon. Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim unveiled an endowment for a world-class digital library, while the Protocol Liason Officer to the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ambassador Yakubu Musa, donated an Alumni Secretariat to enhance alumni engagement.

The Silver Jubilee also highlighted NSUK’s growing global recognition. The university was ranked 36th in Sub-Saharan Africa, 8th in Nigeria, and 2nd best among state-owned universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education rankings. It also earned 2025 Sustainable Development Goals recognition for advancing equitable education.

From a modest beginning with two faculties, NSUK has expanded to 11 faculties across multiple campuses, including specialized faculties of Agriculture in Lafia and Engineering in Gudi—underscoring its steady transformation into a comprehensive academic powerhouse.

The historic celebration concluded with the presentation of awards and souvenirs to distinguished guests, followed by group photographs, leaving behind a legacy of pride, achievement, and renewed commitment as the university looks ahead to its next 25 years.
