Chapter Three:

Lena knew the rules of survival.

She had learned them young—keep your head down, pick your battles, and never give people the satisfaction of seeing you break.

But Wellington University was testing her limits.

She could feel it, like a storm rolling in.

First, Alec Kingston’s silent threats.

Then, Xavier Cole’s cryptic warning.

And now? Now, it was the whispers.

They started the moment she stepped into the main hall that morning. The subtle glances, the hushed conversations just loud enough for her to hear.

"She’s the one who went against Alec."

"She’s either stupid or fearless."

"You think the Vipers will let this go?"

Lena kept walking, her expression blank, but her fists clenched inside her pockets. She had expected some backlash. She just hadn’t expected it to spread this fast.

She wasn’t paranoid.

She was being watched.

The feeling trailed her down the hallway, through the lecture rooms, and into the library, where she finally exhaled, hoping for a moment of peace.

She was wrong.

Because Xavier Cole was already there.

---

He was leaning against one of the tall wooden bookshelves, arms crossed, watching her like she was an equation he was still trying to solve.

Lena sighed. “Do you always lurk in the shadows, or is this just a new hobby?”

Xavier smirked. “You’re making quite a name for yourself.”

Lena sat down at the nearest table, dropping her bag beside her chair. “Yeah? And what do they call me?”

He walked over, pulling out the chair across from her. “Reckless.”

She raised an eyebrow. “That all?”

Xavier’s smirk didn’t fade. “They’re being polite.”

Lena shrugged. “Let them talk.”

Xavier studied her for a long moment. Then, he leaned forward slightly. “You really don’t care, do you?”

Her gaze met his, unwavering. “Would it change anything if I did?”

He didn’t answer. But the way his eyes flickered, just for a second, made her wonder what he was thinking.

Before he could respond, a loud voice cut through the quiet.

“Well, well, look who we have here.”

Lena’s stomach twisted.

Alec Kingston.

And he wasn’t alone.

The Black Vipers walked in like they owned the place. A group of four—Alec in the center, his second-in-command Jake to his right, and two others Lena didn’t recognize.

They moved like sharks, slow and deliberate.

Xavier didn’t react. He just leaned back in his chair, watching.

Lena forced herself to stay calm.

Alec stopped at the edge of the table, looking between them with amusement. “Didn’t expect to find you two together.”

Lena crossed her arms. “And yet, here you are.”

Alec’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re bold, I’ll give you that. But see, Lena, here’s the thing—around here, there are consequences.”

Lena didn’t flinch. “For what? Not being scared of you?”

Jake scoffed. “You think this is about fear?”

Alec held up a hand, stopping him. “No need for that, Jake. Lena’s new here. She doesn’t understand how things work.”

He turned back to her, tilting his head.

“So, let me make it simple,” he continued. “You made a mistake. But I’m feeling generous, so I’m offering you a choice.”

Lena’s heart pounded, but she kept her voice steady. “Oh? Enlighten me.”

Alec’s smile sharpened. “You can apologize. Right here, right now. Admit you overstepped. And we can forget this ever happened.”

Lena met his gaze, unblinking. “And if I don’t?”

Alec sighed dramatically. “Then things get... complicated.”

A silence stretched between them.

Lena knew what he was doing.

This wasn’t about an apology. It was about control.

He wanted her to break. To submit.

No.

She wasn’t giving him that.

Lena leaned forward, matching his gaze. “Here’s the thing, Alec,” she said, voice quiet but firm. “I don’t owe you anything. And if you think you can intimidate me into groveling, you’re wasting your time.”

For the first time, something flickered in Alec’s expression.

Something cold.

The library was so quiet, she could hear the distant ticking of the wall clock.

Jake took a step forward, but Alec stopped him again.

Then, after a tense second, Alec chuckled. “Interesting.”

He straightened, eyes glinting with something unreadable. “Alright, Hart. If that’s how you want to play it.”

He turned to Xavier, smirking. “And you, Cole? Just here for the show?”

Xavier’s expression was unreadable. “Always.”

Alec’s smirk widened. “Good. Then I guess we’ll see how this plays out.”

And just like that, he walked away, the Vipers following.

But Lena knew this wasn’t over.

It had only just begun.

Chapter Two:

Xavier Cole had spent years perfecting the art of vanishing in plain sight. It wasn’t about hiding—it was about control. About knowing when to be seen and when to fade into the background. About watching without being watched.

He had been at Wellington University for just one day, but that was more than enough to map out the power structure. It always worked the same way—there were those who ruled, those who followed, and those who were smart enough to stay out of the way.

The Black Vipers ruled.

Led by Alec Kingston, they controlled the social hierarchy with unspoken laws. No one crossed them. No one questioned them. The moment someone did, they became a target.

And Lena Hart had done exactly that.

Xavier had watched the scene unfold the day before—the moment she stepped between Alec and the freshman he was humiliating. The way she had held her ground, unshaken, her voice steady, her expression unreadable. She hadn’t begged. She hadn’t backed down.

It had been
 interesting.

And now, Alec was watching her.

Xavier had seen the way Alec had sat in the cafĂ© that morning, his gaze locked onto Lena like a predator waiting for the right moment to strike. He wasn’t the kind of person to lash out immediately. No, he preferred games. He liked to make people sweat, to let fear build inside them until they crumbled under it.

But Lena?

She didn’t look like someone who crumbled easily.

And that made her a problem.

---

Lena never thought of herself as reckless.

She didn’t pick fights, didn’t chase trouble, didn’t go looking for enemies. But that didn’t mean she let people walk over her.

And yesterday, when she had seen Alec Kingston cornering that freshman, something inside her had snapped.

Maybe it was the way the kid had been shaking, eyes darting toward the crowd, silently begging for someone to intervene. Maybe it was the smug way Alec had leaned in, whispering something only the freshman could hear before laughing darkly.

Or maybe it was just the simple fact that she hated bullies.

Either way, she had spoken.

And now, she had Alec’s full attention.

Sitting in the crowded cafĂ©, she tried to ignore the way his gaze burned into her from across the room. She could feel him watching her, even without looking. It wasn’t just a casual glance—it was sharp, focused, assessing.

Waiting.

Lena tightened her grip on her coffee cup and exhaled slowly.

She had dealt with guys like him before. Privileged. Arrogant. Used to getting their way.

She knew how this worked.

If she showed fear, she’d lose.

So, she didn’t.

She took her coffee and walked toward the exit, her steps steady. But just as she reached the door, someone stepped in her way.

Tall. Lean. Dark eyes that held secrets.

Xavier Cole.

Lena blinked, caught off guard.

She had noticed him before, but only in passing. He had a way of moving through campus like he belonged everywhere and nowhere at the same time. He was quiet—too quiet. The kind of quiet that wasn’t accidental.

And right now, he was standing directly in her path.

“You’re in my way,” she said flatly.

Xavier didn’t move. “You shouldn’t have done that yesterday.”

Her jaw tightened. “Excuse me?”

He studied her for a second, like he was reading a puzzle and figuring out which piece didn’t fit.

“Alec,” he said. “You humiliated him. And the Vipers don’t let things go.”

Lena raised an eyebrow. “And you care because
?”

Xavier tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable. “I don’t.”

“Then why are we having this conversation?”

His lips twitched, almost like he was amused. “Because I like knowing where all the pieces are on the board.”

Lena frowned. “What are you, some kind of strategist?”

His gaze darkened slightly. “Something like that.”

A silence stretched between them.

Lena exhaled, shifting her coffee to her other hand. “Listen, Xavier, if this is your way of telling me to be careful, thanks, but I don’t need the warning. I know how guys like Alec operate.”

Xavier’s eyes flickered with something she couldn’t quite place. “Do you?”

“Yeah,” she said simply. “They like control. They like making people feel small. But the moment you stop fearing them, they lose their power.”

Xavier let out a slow breath, something almost like a smirk playing at the edge of his lips.

“Interesting theory,” he murmured. “Let’s see how long it lasts.”

Then, without another word, he stepped aside.

Lena hesitated for half a second before walking past him.

She didn’t look back.

---

Alec Kingston wasn’t used to being ignored.

He was used to respect, fear, submission.

And yet, twice in twenty-four hours, Lena Hart had walked away from him without flinching.

That was a problem.

Xavier had expected Alec to lash out immediately, but instead, he was patient. Watching. Calculating.

So, when Alec slid into the seat across from Xavier in the library later that evening, Xavier wasn’t surprised.

“We need to talk,” Alec said, his voice smooth, measured.

Xavier didn’t look up from his book. “Do we?”

Alec exhaled sharply. “I saw you talking to her.”

“Who?”

Alec’s jaw tightened. “Don’t play dumb, Cole. Hart.”

Xavier finally closed his book and met Alec’s gaze. “And?”

Alec studied him for a long moment. “You don’t get involved in things. You stay invisible. So why now?”

Xavier smirked. “Who says I’m involved?”

Alec leaned back, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he smiled. “Just be careful. Some people don’t take kindly to outsiders messing with things they don’t understand.”

Xavier tilted his head. “Funny. I was just about to say the same thing.”

Alec’s smile tightened, but his eyes flashed with something darker.

“You know, Cole,” he said slowly, “I never figured you out. You keep your head down, but something tells me that’s not because you’re weak. It’s because you’re waiting.”

Xavier just watched him.

Alec leaned forward. “What are you waiting for?”

Xavier smiled. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Alec chuckled, standing up. “See you around, Cole.”

With that, he walked away, leaving Xavier alone.

For a long moment, Xavier sat in silence.

He had planned to stay under the radar. To blend in. To play the role.

But now?

Now, Lena had changed things.

And Alec knew it too.

This was no longer a game of avoiding attention.

This was a game of control.

And Xavier Cole never lost.

——–—
university campus hummed with the chaos of arrival day—new students dragging oversized suitcases, their faces painted with excitement, nerves, or both. Parents hovered in the background, offering advice that went unheard as their children fought the excitement of starting something new. But it wasn’t just freshmen rushing through the gates. No, it was the upperclassmen with their air of superiority, walking like they already owned the place, their whispers like a faint melody playing in the background of the chaos. Money, power, and status were already etched into every conversation, every look. It wasn’t just a campus—it was a battlefield, and everyone here knew exactly where they stood.

Among the crowd, Xavier Cole was a ghost. He moved without drawing attention, blending in effortlessly with the rest of the students. His faded jeans, scuffed sneakers, and hoodie didn’t scream wealth—if anything, they screamed “average student” with a little too much ease. No one would guess that a week ago, he had signed a billion-dollar deal while sipping coffee in his penthouse. No one would guess that this whole “college experience” was a game—a chance to live a life in plain sight, a life no one would notice.

He scanned the campus with cool eyes, already analyzing the landscape, the factions, the subtle shifts of power. He’d been doing this for years. Whether it was in boardrooms or on the streets, he understood people—how they moved, how they thought, how they could be played. He wasn’t here to make friends. He wasn’t here to fit in.

He was here for a reason, and it was all part of the plan.

But then, something caught his attention.

A group of students gathered around a freshman, their laughter echoing in the open air. Xavier’s first thought was to ignore it—just another group of students looking for a target. But something about the tension in the air made him pause. It wasn’t just idle teasing. This was bullying, the kind that left a mark.

The Black Vipers were notorious for this kind of thing.

They were rich, powerful, and ruthless, like wolves who surrounded their prey before the first bite. Each member of the group had something to prove, a position to maintain. Alec Kingston, their leader, was tall and broad-shouldered, his designer jacket hanging perfectly on his frame. He had the kind of face that belonged on a magazine cover, and the kind of arrogance that belonged to someone who could buy a magazine and burn it just to watch it smolder.

Xavier didn’t need to hear the words to understand the scene unfolding. The freshman, eyes wide with fear, was clearly out of his depth. But then, just as the laughter peaked, a sharp voice cut through the air.

“Enough.”

The crowd shifted. Silence.

Lena Hart.

Xavier had heard her name, of course. Everyone had. She wasn’t a part of the social elite, but there was something about her—a confidence that made people take notice. Her name wasn’t whispered in the same way as Alec’s, but it had a weight.

Lena stood with her arms crossed, a slight smirk playing at her lips, her eyes cold and unwavering as she stared down Alec Kingston. She wasn’t loud, she didn’t need to be, but her presence commanded attention. Her leather jacket, black jeans, and ankle boots were understated but gave off an aura of sharp sophistication. She looked like she belonged in control, and from the way she faced Alec, it was clear she wasn’t afraid of him.

“Is this what you do for fun?” she asked, her voice smooth and cutting. “Pick on freshmen because they’re easy targets?”

Alec’s lips curled into a smirk, but his eyes narrowed, sizing her up. “Relax, Hart. We’re just having some fun.”

“Fun?” Lena’s voice was a low laugh, mocking. “There’s nothing fun about bullying. There’s nothing fun about making someone feel small just to make yourself feel bigger.”

The group of Vipers seemed taken aback. They were used to getting their way, used to making people cower with just a look. But Lena? She wasn’t backing down.

“Mind your business, Hart,” Alec said, his voice thick with forced calm. But there was an edge there—something dangerous, a warning. “You don’t want to make enemies on the first day.”

Lena didn’t flinch. She took a step closer, her gaze never leaving his. “I’ve never been good at making friends with people who think they’re above everyone else. And enemies? I already have enough of those.”

The Vipers exchanged glances. Alec’s expression flickered, a flash of uncertainty crossing his face before he regained control. “Whatever,” he muttered, turning away. He wasn’t going to start a scene—not here, not with an audience.

The freshman, whose terror was still palpable, grabbed his things and bolted, disappearing into the crowd.

Lena didn’t look back at the group. She simply turned, heading toward the administration building without another word.

Xavier’s eyes followed her. There was something about the way she moved—calm, collected, almost like she was untouchable. It wasn’t arrogance. It wasn’t even defiance. It was a quiet strength, the kind that didn’t beg for attention but got it anyway.

His interest was piqued.

But then, just as he took a step toward the building, a collision sent him stumbling backward.

It happened so quickly that he didn’t even have time to react—one moment, he was standing still, and the next, Lena Hart had walked straight into him. Papers flew, her elbow slammed into his chest, and before he knew it, they were both on the ground.

For a second, time seemed to freeze. There was a brief silence before a muffled curse escaped from Lena’s lips.

She was the first to recover, pushing herself up and brushing her jacket off with practiced ease. “I’m so sorry,” she muttered, looking at him with faint embarrassment but no real panic.

Xavier blinked, still processing the suddenness of it all. He pushed himself to his feet, meeting her gaze. “No problem.”

She didn’t linger on the incident. Without another word, she adjusted her bag and started walking away, completely unfazed.

Xavier watched her go, his mind racing.

It was strange. He hadn’t been knocked down, but there was something about the encounter that had caught him off guard. Maybe it was her calmness, her ability to own the space she walked into without trying. Maybe it was the way she stood up to Alec without blinking.

And maybe, just maybe, it was the fact that the freshman wasn’t the only one who had been targeted today.

Xavier’s lips curled into a slow, knowing smile. This is just getting interesting.
