PETER OBI SPEAKS ON BORGU ABDUCTIONS: โTHIS IS ONE CASE TOO MANYโ
Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over reports of the mass abduction of Nigerians in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, following attacks on communities including Dekara and the reported abduction of worshippers during Jumaโat prayers.
He said reports indicate that as many as 600 people, predominantly women, children and the elderly, may have been taken, although the exact number is still being verified. He also expressed sadness over reports that about 30 people may have been killed.
Obi described the incident as โone case too many,โ stressing that the reported attack, particularly the abduction of worshippers in such numbers, should shake the conscience of every Nigerian and compel urgent action from government.
He said Nigerians should not continue to be left vulnerable while the political class appears increasingly consumed by the next election, noting that elections would come and go, but lives once lost could not be recovered.
He called on the government to treat the situation as an emergency by deploying overwhelming, intelligence-led security operations to rescue those in captivity, secure the affected communities and dismantle the networks and enclaves enabling terrorists to operate.
Obi further noted that reports of difficult terrain and a collapsed bridge hampering the initial rescue response in Borgu reinforced his consistent call for the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure.
He expressed solidarity with the Niger State Government, the people of Niger State and the families of those abducted and killed, stressing the need to bring the victims home and restore public confidence in the government's responsibility to protect citizens.
He concluded by reaffirming that โA New Nigeria is POssible, and Nigeria will be OK.โ
