My Dad Asked My Girlfriend What She Can Cook She Said ‘Nothing Yet
My dad didn’t shout. He just calmly told her
My dear, go back to your mother’s house and learn. In this family, even I, the father, can cook better than some chefs
She was shocked. I was embarrassed
I’ve always known my father to be a man of discipline. He didn’t raise us with belts he raised us with principles. In our house, everybody, including the boys, must know how to sweep, wash, and especially cook. My father can cook like a professional chef. His ogbono soup will make you forget your name, and his native rice has humbled many visitors. So when I introduced my girlfriend, Sarah, to him, I had no idea her answer to one simple question would almost cost us the relationship
Sarah is beautiful, soft-spoken, and smart. She has a gentle smile and dresses modestly. She’s not the loud, dramatic type. She had already won my heart with her kindness and how she supported me emotionally, especially when I was job-hunting. So when I told my dad I was bringing her home for the weekend, he said, “Good. Let me see who’s planning to take my son’s peace I laughed, thinking it was a joke. Oh, how wrong I was
Saturday came. Sarah wore a lovely gown and helped carry the foodstuff we bought on the way. We got to the house, and my dad welcomed her warmly. He even teased, “Fine girl! So you’re the one making my son smile like a goat these days?” We all laughed. She was relaxed. Everything was going well until the question came.
We were all in the sitting room after lunch when my dad, out of nowhere, asked her, “So my daughter, what can you cook?” Sarah smiled politely and replied, “Nothing yet, sir.” I blinked. My soul shifted. I wasn’t sure if I heard well. My father looked confused. “Nothing?” he repeated. Sarah nodded, “Yes sir, I haven’t really learned how to cook yet. But I plan to learn.” My father's face changed from joy to judgment in 0.5 seconds
