🧤 WHY ONLY SURGICAL GLOVES SHOULD TOUCH THE VA**NA

Dear Preggie Mama,

Do you ever wondered why your Doctor/Midwife insist on surgical gloves and not just in “any glove” during va**nal examination (VE)?

It’s not drama. It’s SCIENCE + SAFETY.

Here’s why 👇🏽

1️⃣The va**na is NOT just any body part

It’s a delicate, self-cleaning Organ with good bacteria protecting it.
Use Non-surgical gloves for Va**na Examination can:

❌ introduce harmful germs

❌ disrupt normal va**nal flora

❌ increase risk of infection

2️⃣ Surgical gloves are sterile

✔️ Made to be germ-free

✔️ Packaged and handled to prevent contamination

Examination gloves (like clean or utility gloves) are NOT sterile .
“Clean” is not the same as STERILE.

3️⃣ Chemical safety matters

Some non-surgical gloves contain:

⚠️ powders

⚠️ chemicals

⚠️ latex residues
These can cause:

• irritation

• burning

• allergic reactions

• abnormal discharge

Especially in pregnant women 🫄🏾

4️⃣Higher risk of contracting Infections in Pregnancy

During pregnancy and labour:
🔴 cervix is open

🔴 infection can easily travel upward

🔴 baby can be affected

Using the wrong glove can mean:

❌ infections

❌ prolonged labour

❌ risk to mother and baby

5️⃣ It’s a standard of care

Using surgical gloves for VE is:

✅ a professional standard

✅ an infection-prevention rule

✅ a basic patient right

Know this:

👉 The va**na deserves sterile respect

👉 Surgical gloves are NOT optional

👉 Your body. Your safety. Your right.

💬 Question for you:
Have you ever noticed what type of gloves were used during your examination?

Why Babies Weighing >4kg Are Often Admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Mama,

You must have felt really bad when after delivery you were told that that your big, robust and seemingly healthy baby will be admitted in NICU and you had vehemently refused the Doctor's plan.

Relax , Mama and see why you were told that 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

🍬 1. Risk of LOW blood sugar (very common)

Big babies especially those born to mothers with diabetes or high blood sugar can develop hypoglycaemia( low blood sugar)

Why? Because in the womb, baby was used to high sugar and after birth, that supply suddenly stops.

Low sugar can be silent but dangerous if missed.

Admission into NICU helps with:

✔️ regular blood sugar checks

✔️ early feeding or IV glucose if needed

🫁 2. Breathing difficulties

Some big babies:
🔹breathe fast

🔹grunt

🔹 tire easily

This can happen even when they look “okay”.

Being in NICU allows:

✔️ oxygen support if needed

✔️ close respiratory monitoring

🤕 3. Birth-related injuries

Big babies have higher risk of:

🔹shoulder injury

🔹nerve injury

Owing to difficult delivery

Even if baby cries well, Doctors/Nurses will still observe closely for:

👉 weakness in an arm

👉 poor movement

👉 hidden complications

🧠 4. Monitoring after difficult or assisted delivery
Many big babies are born via:

🔹 prolonged labour

🔹vacuum/forceps

🔹emergency C-section

These babies may look fine initially but still need observation.

🌡️ 5. Temperature and feeding challenges

Large babies can:

• struggle with feeding initially

• low temperature

• tire quickly

Being NICU ensures:

✔️ proper feeding

✔️ warmth

✔️ energy conservation

Mama,

That that your baby is “ big” and admitted in
NICU does NOT mean:

❌ your baby is abnormal

❌ your baby is sick

❌ Or something terrible will happen to your baby.

It only means “ your baby needs extra watching” and your baby may just need a brief stay in NICU and go home perfectly well.

Mama,
Was this explained to you when your baby was admitted?

What to do if your Newborn breast secrete milk 🥛

Dear Mama,

Some newborns ,boys and girls can have breast swelling and even milk discharge in the first days or weeks of life. It’s called “witch’s milk.”

So what’s going on? 🤱🏽

During pregnancy, your hormones cross your baby's placenta to your baby. After birth, those hormones slowly wear off and while they’re still around, baby’s breast tissue may react by:

✔️ Swelling

✔️ Feeling firm

✔️ Secreting a little milky fluid

So it is totally normal and temporary

What SHOULD you do?

✨ Do nothing. Yes, nothing is often the best treatment

✨ Leave the breast alone

✨ Keep the area clean and dry

✨ Continue normal baby care

What you should NOT do ❌

🚫 Do NOT squeeze or press the breast (this can cause infection)

🚫 Do NOT massage it

🚫 Do NOT apply hot compresses or herbs

🚫 Do NOT panic 😌

When should you worry? 🚨

See a health professional if you notice:

⚠️ Redness, warmth, or pain

⚠️ Fever

⚠️ Pus-like discharge

⚠️ Baby seems unwell

Otherwise, this usually clears on its own within a few weeks.

Mama,

Not everything that looks scary is dangerous.

WHY SOME DRINKS🥤 ARE DISCOURAGED DURING LABOUR

Dear Mama,

Have you ever been shocked when the midwife said “No soft drinks during labour”?

Or you wondered: “As long as it’s not alcohol, does the drink really matter?” 🤔

You’re not alone. Many mums think fluid is fluid.

But in labour not all drinks hydrate the same.

Here is what most women naturally reach for 👇🏽

🥤 Soft/Carbonated drinks – Coke, Pepsi, Fanta, 7Up, Tonic

⚡ Energy drinks – Red Bull, Monster, Lucozade Alert

🥛🍹 Milkshakes & sugary juices

Sounds harmless but sadly 🚨 these are NOT ideal for labour hydration.

🚫 Why these drinks are discouraged in labour

They’ve been linked to 👇🏽
❌ Energy crashes (that sudden weakness 😩)

❌ Blood sugar spikes & complications

❌ Increased heart rate & blood pressure 💓

❌ Dehydration (yes some make you p*e more 🚽)

They contain High sugar and caffeine 💥

🏃🏽‍♀️ Labour is like running a marathon 🥵

You lose:

💧 Water

🧂 Salts

⚡ Energy

So your drink must be capable of replacing ALL THREE 👌🏽

✅ So what SHOULD you drink in labour?

🥤 Water (always number one 💧)

🥥 Coconut water

🧪 ORS

🏃🏽 Isotonic drinks (e.g. Lucozade Sport)

✨ These keep you hydrated, energised, and stable, exactly what labour needs.

Mama,

Always confirm what your birthing facility allows and pack your approved hydration drinks inside your hospital bag 👜

Because with the right drinks, you’ll labour better 💪🏽✨

Why Your Nose Looks Bigger in Pregnancy

Mama,

You’re pregnant

Your tummy is growing

Your b***s are growing

Then you look in the mirror and you are like,

“Wait ! why is my NOSE joining the growing movement?” 😭😂 and you feel bad

Relax mama, your nose didn’t betray you, Science did.

So why does the nose look bigger in pregnancy?

👃🏽 1. Hormones at work

Pregnancy hormone(estrogen precisely) increase blood flow everywhere including your nose causing your nasal tissue to swell resulting i a bigger looking nose

💧 2. Water retention

Pregnancy causes fluid retention. That puffiness you see in your feet and fingers also affect your nose

🔥 3. Increased blood volume

Your body makes extra blood to support baby. The tiny blood vessels in your face expand making your nose look wider or fuller.

🤧 4. Pregnancy rhinitis is another culprit for bigger Nose in Pregnancy.

Blocked or stuffy nose in pregnancy can cause swelling, redness, and that “my face has changed” feeling.

However be rest reassured that:
❌ Your nose bones are NOT growing

❌ You’re NOT permanently changing

✅ It’s temporary

✅ It usually goes back after delivery

Your nose is just showing pregnancy support

Mama,

If your nose grew during Pregnancy dropped a 🤰🏽👃🏽 in the comments.

HIDDEN SECRETS OF WHY YOUR PCV IS ALWAYS LOW AS A PREGNANT WOMAN

"I eat well, I take my drugs so WHY is my PCV still low?” 😭

If you’re pregnant and your results came back like:

PCV: below normal

And you whispered:

“But I eat beans, I take blood tonic and I don’t skip my routine drugs o!”

Sister, sit down. Let’s talk 😅

Low PCV in pregnancy doesn’t always mean you’re doing something wrong.

Sometimes it’s because 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

🤰🏽 Pregnancy increases your blood volume

Your body adds more fluid than red blood cells so your blood looks “diluted.”

It’s like adding more water to soup. The taste changes, even if you cooked well.

🥗 Eating well doesn’t mean absorbing well
Vomiting, poor appetite, worms, or stomach issues can stop your body from using the iron you’re eating.

💊 Routine drugs help — but they’re not magic
Iron takes time. Missing doses, taking it with tea, or stopping when nausea comes can slow progress.

🩸 Baby is also collecting blood materials

Yes. Your baby is also “chopping” from the same supply 😌

😴 Stress, infections, or frequent pregnancies.
These ones quietly drain your PCV without making noise.
So no , low PCV doesn’t automatically mean:

❌ You’re careless

❌ You’re not eating

❌ You’re failing pregnancy

Sometimes it just means your body is working very hard.

💡 The key is early ANC, regular checks, and honest conversations with your caregiver.

Be honest

Have you ever been shocked by your PCV result despite “doing everything right”?

6 Reasons why Health Professionals Discourage Bottle feeding

Bottle feeding 🧑🏾‍🍼is not evil Practice, but here are 6 reasons why health professionals generally Discourage it when Safer option exist

🔑 Higher risk of infections

Bottles can easily carry germs if not sterilized perfectly. Babies fed with bottles (especially in low-resource settings) have higher rates of:

Diarrhea

Chest infections

Ear infections

Breast milk goes straight from source to baby , no contamination.

🔑 No immune protection

Breastmilk is not just food; it’s medicine and nutrition.

Formula and bottle feeding lack:

Antibodies

White blood cells

Protective enzymes

This means less defense against illness.

🔑 Overfeeding is easier

Bottles make it easy to:

Force-feed

Ignore baby’s fullness cues

This can lead to:
Vomiting

Excessive weight gain

Poor self-regulation later in life

🔑 Increased risk of dental problems

Prolonged bottle use especially at night can cause:

Early childhood tooth decay (“bottle caries”)

Jaw and bite problems

🔑 Weaker bonding (in some cases)

Breastfeeding naturally encourages:

Skin-to-skin contact

Eye contact

Hormones that strengthen bonding

Bottle feeding can still bond but it takes more intentional effort.

🔑 Cost and preparation risks

Bottle feeding means:

Buying formula constantly

Risk of wrong mixing ratios

Unsafe water issues in some regions.

Breast milk is always:

Free

Sterile

The right temperature
Important balance

However, some babies must be bottle fed. They include:

Preterm or sick babies

Mothers with certain medical conditions

Adoptive parents

When breastfeeding is not possible, safe bottle feeding saves lives and should never be shamed.

Babies should not be bottle fed by default when safer, biologically designed options (like breastfeeding or cup feeding) are available.

But a fed baby is better than a hungry baby always.
