According To This Appeal Court Ruling, Road Safety Corps Cannot Seize Your Vehicle Papers If They Don't Plan To Take You To Court

In a recent landmark judgment, the Court of Appeal in Owerri ruled that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has no legal power to seize your driver’s licence, vehicle, or any related documents unless they are taking legal action against you.

The case involved Dr. Shebbs Emmanuel Ugochukwu, whose licence was seized in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown after he refused to give a bribe. He took the matter to court, and after years of legal battle, the Appeal Court affirmed that the FRSC violated his fundamental rights and awarded him N10 million in damages.

This ruling sets a powerful precedent: FRSC officers cannot act outside the law. If they are not charging you to court, they have no right to seize your documents.

Media Rights Group Alleges Rising Crackdown on Journalists Under President Tinubu

A new report by Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has revealed a disturbing surge in attacks on journalists and free speech under President Tinubu’s administration.

In its mid-term assessment, MRA documented 141 incidents of harassment, arrest, and assault on journalists and citizens over two years, with the Nigeria Police and DSS responsible for nearly half.

The report accuses the government of misusing the Cybercrime Act, especially Section 24, to silence critics online. Some notable victims mentioned in the report include journalists from FIJ, Informant247, and rights activist Dele Farotimi.

Even more alarming, peaceful protesters — including minors — are reportedly being charged with treason, while no action is taken against those attacking media workers.

MRA warns: “The very freedoms President Tinubu once fought for are now under threat.” It calls on Nigerians, the media, and the international community to demand urgent reforms.

What are your thoughts on the state of press freedom in Nigeria today?

Prove Allegations Of Killer Herdsmen Camps, Land Grabbing Or Face Legal Action, Governor Sule Dares Prof Gundu

The Nasarawa State Government has issued a stern ultimatum to Professor Zachary Anger Gundu, a prominent academic and former Pro-Chancellor of Benue State University, demanding that he produce concrete evidence to support his recent allegations against Governor Abdullahi A. Sule or risk facing legal action.

The warning was issued during a press conference addressed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ibrahim Addra, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Lafia.

According to Mr. Addra, the government is responding to a viral video in which Prof. Gundu accused Governor Sule of “masking the killings in Benue State” and “forcefully taking over farmlands belonging to the Tiv people of Nasarawa State and handing over same to Fulani herdsmen.”

Describing the remarks as “malicious,” “unguarded,” and “baseless,” the CPS stated, “We are dismayed that Prof. Gundu could stoop so low and throw caution to the wind by making such unsubstantiated and baseless allegations against the Governor.”

The statement emphasized that Nasarawa State shares in the grief of the killings in Benue, but will not tolerate attempts to malign the person of Governor Sule.

“It is on record that Governor Sule, in the spirit of brotherhood and good neighborliness, has continued to demonstrate serious concern and empathy over unfortunate killings in Benue and other parts of the North-Central region,” Addra noted.

He further issued a challenge to Prof. Gundu to provide “empirical evidence” to substantiate his claims.

“We challenge Prof. Gundu to:
i. Prove his allegations with empirical evidence, detailing where the said killer herdsmen are being camped in Nasarawa State and the involvement of the Governor in such.
ii. Bring forward, concrete evidence to substantiate the grievous allegations of land seized and handed over to herdsmen or any other persons for that matter,” the statement read.

Addra warned that failure to do so would leave Prof. Gundu with only one honorable path: to “retract his malicious statements against Governor Sule and tender an unreserved apology.” He added that should this not happen, “Governor Abdullahi Sule will institute legal actions against the former Pro-Chancellor and his co-travellers.”

The Nasarawa State Government also rejected any suggestion that the Governor or the administration had ever ceded land to Fulani herdsmen or any group.

“No Fulani man has ever approached the State Government for land, neither has the Governor as a person or the State Government forcefully taken over land from citizens not to talk of handing it over to anyone or group of persons,” the CPS stated.

The press conference also reiterated the State’s commitment to peace and inter-ethnic harmony, particularly between communities in Nasarawa and neighboring Benue.

“The relative peace in Nasarawa State under Governor Abdullahi Sule as acknowledged by many within and outside the State is achieved through effective partnership and support to security agencies, consistent dialogue with leaders of the various ethnic groups, including Tiv, Alago, Fulani, among other stakeholders.”

Addra concluded by urging the public to disregard the allegations and support joint peace efforts, emphasizing that “Governor Sule, who remains committed to building peace and unity among the people, cannot turn around to influence or encourage anybody to engage in criminal activities under whatever guise.”

The State Government's reaction marks a new twist in the cross-border tensions triggered by the ongoing security challenges in the North-Central region.

Senate Approves Tinubu’s $21 Billion Foreign Loan Request for 2025–2026

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday (July 22, 2025), approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to borrow over $21 billion from foreign sources to finance the 2025 and 2026 budgets, clearing the way for the Federal Government to pursue an ambitious borrowing plan intended to support the full implementation of the 2025 Appropriation Act.

The approval followed the presentation and adoption of a report by Senator Aliyu Wamako, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, during plenary.

According to the committee’s findings, the loan request was first forwarded to the National Assembly on May 27, 2025, but was delayed due to a legislative recess and incomplete documentation from the Debt Management Office (DMO).

The comprehensive borrowing plan includes:

$21.19 billion in direct foreign loans,

€4 billion,

¥15 billion,

A $65 million grant, and

A domestic borrowing component of approximately ₦757 billion through government bonds.

The framework also allows the Federal Government to raise an additional $2 billion from the domestic market through an instrument denominated in foreign currency.

Presenting the committee’s report, Senator Wamako said the facilities were tied to key projects across various sectors and would be sourced from multilateral and bilateral institutions such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, and the Islamic Development Bank.

He added that the terms and conditions of the loans would be negotiated with due regard for national interest and sustainability.

The Senate's approval is a significant step in the ex*****on of the Tinubu administration’s medium-term economic plan, which emphasizes infrastructure development, energy transition, and poverty reduction.

However, the growing dependence on loans has sparked unease among some Nigerians who point to the country’s mounting debt profile and the apparent lack of tangible results from previous borrowings. Critics argue that the burden of repayment could further strain public finances and reduce fiscal space for future development.

Permanent Secretary Abducted in Lafia, Police Launch Manhunt

The Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Police has launched a full-scale manhunt following the suspected abduction of Barrister Yusuf Musa, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the incident was first uncovered in the early hours of the day when a police patrol team from B Division, Lafia, found a Peugeot pick-up van with its doors suspiciously left open.

Further investigation led the officers to the victim’s residence, where they discovered the gate ajar. A search of the premises revealed that Barr. Musa was missing. His GMC vehicle, with registration number KUJ 88 PA, was also unaccounted for, strengthening suspicion that he had been abducted.

In response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, immediately activated a coordinated tactical response, dispatching alerts to police formations across the state—including divisions in Akwanga, Andaha, Garaku, and Kadarko—and intensifying surveillance along critical exit routes.

The police said they are working tirelessly to ensure the safe rescue of the Permanent Secretary and the apprehension of those responsible.

"The Command is committed to leaving no stone unturned in our effort to bring the perpetrators to justice and reunite the victim with his family," the statement read.

UNVEILING HIS GREY EMINENCE, BARRISTER MAKU KIGBU-BMK; A Celebration of Simplicity, Silent Impact and Inspirational Life!

By Sen Dugga

In a world where heroes often seek recognition and prominence from the front lines, Barrister Maku Kigbu, BMK as he prefers to be fondly addressed, shines humbly, devoid of vain glories .

His striking simplicity and selfless ideology has had a profound impact on student unionists, community leaders, youth movements, political and professional landscape over the years!

A Life of Simplicity and Purpose

At Federal Government College, Jos, Saint Joseph's College, Vom, Plateau State, the University of Jos, Nigerian Law School, Bwarri, and in work life and socio political engagements, BMK's simplicity, deep insights and leadership prowess inspired and endeared many followers to him. Despite not holding any office, he championed good governance, effective representation, and selfless service, influencing notable associates and people from all walks of life and divides throughout his four decades journey.

Despite his privileged background, back in the university, BMK stayed in the hostels and lived very simple life throughout his university days, relating and sharing with those not considered of same class or status as him in the eyes of society.

He often wrote scholarly articles, influenced and actively participated in protests against tuition fee hikes, erratic power supply, and other students rights issues on campus.

BMK was instrumental in my trajectory and that of many others before and after me, whom we shared passionate ideas of community development and leadership from time immemorial. He was especially significant in my emergence as the National President of the Eggon Youth Movement (Later referred to as Eggon Youth Wing) now renamed Eggon Youth Association (EYA).

BMK has been the shadow producer behind the scenes of the happenings and movements within our community youth network across the state and the diaspora.

BMK has entrenched himself in the grassroots, and amongst the stakeholders who have come to align with his idea of a paradigm shift away from the monetisation, procurement and devaluation of community leadership roles. This he believes, will pave way for men and women of thought, good conscience and character, needed for the actualisation of the aspirations of the community, as against self serving and desperate individuals who seek vain glorification and are simply crazy for positions and sundry titles. He believes leadership should be taken seriously at the community level with focus on community development agenda.

BMK's clarion call, has gained wide acceptance amongst the youths and stakeholders of his community, and has metamorphosed into a movement of some sort, attracting a large spectrum of followers. But as it is with every idea or movement, there will always be pockets of resistance and blackmail by the status quo and their beneficiaries, in attempt to derail and dismiss its potency and acceptance.

BMK's blend of native intelligence and intellectual insights on issues, earns him respect and accolades amongst his peers and the elders guild.

BMK is one of the few examples of wards from prominent homes in society who have not allowed the temporal privileges of life to overshadow their humanity and character, and have strived to stay simple and maintain respectful relationships with people in high and low places. Those who are not privy to these aspects of him, keep questioning the level of influence and respect he has earned especially amongst the youth strata of his community and beyond.

A life of mentorship and inspiration

BMK is a rooted individual, culturally and philosophically. His love for culture and arts pushed him to learn and gain mastery of the Gbini (Raft Zither), a traditional musical instrument of his Eggon ancestry, which he fondly played in his days on campus and still entertains himself with till date at home and abroad. His fluency in Eggon Language and mastery of the Gbini musical instrument remain a reference point of admiration and inspiration in the society. It is also a testament to his cultured upbringing and afrocentric background.

BMK recently shunned to limelight with a sample of his melodious Gbini music at the Jos International Museum Day to the admiration of many dignitaries including Governor Sule, Former Governor Dariye, Aren Eggon, Emir of Lafia, B**g Gwom Jos, Hon Solomon Ewuga, Bar Halilu Envulanza, Alhaji Ishaku and a host of other notable personalities from the traditional institutions, academia, politics and private enterprise.

In terms of mentorship, BMK is an idea pad on the go. A storehouse of unique thoughts, strategies and craft. He can envision and fine tune ideas instantly. I can describe him as a prolific craftsman of ideas and programmes.

On a light note, BMK's peaceful and respectful outlook can be mistaken for weakness. He is a silent Indaboski, a gentle lion, capable of light mischief and trouble when pushed to the limits!

*Outlook on Life*

BMK believes excellence in professionalism, selfless service to humanity and community development are the most enduring legacies of an individual over and above vain glories. This is what he symbolises and the future is now!

Like every human, BMK has a fair share of his fault lines, weaknesses and need improvement. His often tough speak, radical opinions on issues and knack for perfection in ex*****on of tasks and shared objectives, could come off as overbearing, due to his zeal for excellence and immediate results and outcomes. He needs more mastery in patience and understanding of team strengths and weaknesses.

His knack for humour makes him a lively guest and conversationalist. His opinions are sharp, often provoking deep thoughts and humour.

From all assessment, BMK is a passionate and consummate personality gifted in multi-dimensional ways. And I believe society has a lot yet to derive from his resourceful and bold ideas.

On behalf of his cream of friends and associates, I join the family to celebrate him on his birthday, and I pray for God's speed and perfection towards the actualisation of his visions and aspirations in the society.

Best wishes to a true friend, a brother, comrade and a rising light on his auspicious birthday anniversary!

NB. Barrister Maku Kigbu, BMK, is a Legal Practitioner and Consultant, with over 13 years experience in public Administration, Corporate Governance, Telecommunications business, Policy and Regulation

Dugga, G. S. is a close friend and associate of BMK for over 18 years and he writes on behalf of Friends & Associates of BMK.
