Six Days after the Kwara Officials’ Visit to Lafiagi Waterworks, the Community is Still Without Water; LEYTA Questions Pump Capacity
Six days after engineers from the Kwara State Ministry of Water Resources visited the Lafiagi Waterworks and declared the facility fully rehabilitated and functional, residents of Lafiagi say they have yet to receive a drop of potable water. The ministry’s team had assured the public that the waterworks were operational, but community members insist that there has been no visible improvement in water supply even after the visit.
The Lafiagi Emirate Youth Transparent Association (LEYTA) has also expressed strong doubts about the government’s claims, alleging that the facility is being operated with small submersible pumps incapable of meeting the community’s water needs. The group also cited the town’s poor reticulation network as a major obstacle to water distribution.
Eyewitnesses and LEYTA members who monitored the inspection visit said the installed pumps during the purported produce only a “tiny flow” of water from the source to the main reservoir.
“The submersible pumps currently in use are too small to serve the community effectively,” one LEYTA representative stated. “Four large pumps that were previously used at the facility have now been replaced with smaller ones, and one of the major pumps is no longer operational.”
During the visit, officials from the Ministry of Water Resources reportedly insisted that their mission was to demonstrate that “water is flowing” and maintained that the system was functional. However, residents and youth groups disagreed, arguing that the water pressure remains far too weak to fill the reservoir, let alone reach households. LEYTA has therefore called on the Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Yunusa Lade, to personally visit Lafiagi and clarify the true state of the rehabilitation project. The group also urged the Kwara State Government to take urgent steps to ensure the facility meets the community’s needs.
The Lafiagi Waterworks has long been a subject of controversy, with government officials claiming full rehabilitation while many residents continue to allege neglect and misrepresentation.
