COMMANDER 22 BRIGADE VISITS IFELODUN, ISIN LGAs AMID SECURITY CHALLENGES… REASSURES RESIDENTS OF PEACE

The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, in company of the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, and the Director, Department of State Services (DSS), Kwara State Command, Mr Michael Oganwu, on Saturday 13 September 2025, visited Omu-Aran in Ifelodun and Isin Local Government Areas of Kwara State.

The visit followed a distress call by the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, over violent protests by youths against rising incidents of kidnapping for ransom within their communities.

The aggrieved youths blocked sections of the Omu-Aran–Eleyin–Ajase road in Isin LGA, thereby halting the movement of commuters and creating tension in the area.

Troops of 22 Armoured Brigade, led by Brigadier General Barkins, in collaboration with the Police and DSS, swiftly mobilized to the scene. The joint team dispersed the protesters, restored order, and cleared the road for the free flow of traffic. Some identified ringleaders of the protest were arrested and handed over to the Kwara State Police Command for investigation and further action.

Speaking after the operation, Brigadier General Barkins reassured residents of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to their safety and cautioned against violent protests. He urged youths to explore lawful and peaceful channels for expressing grievances, while reiterating the importance of cooperation with security agencies in combating kidnapping and other criminal activities.

The Brigade Commander further appealed for closer collaboration between residents and security operatives, stressing that security is a collective responsibility that requires timely and credible information from communities to enable swift intervention.

Later, the security heads, met with the Chairman, Isin Local Government Area (LGA), Honourable Jolayemi Benjamin, village heads, and other stakeholders. During the meeting, the stakeholders were urged to counsel youths against violence and to strengthen cooperation with security agencies. Hon. Benjamin commended the swift intervention of the joint team and assured continued support of the LGA in efforts to restore peace and stability in the area.

Party Politics: Crisis Rocks Tsaragi Ward 1 PDP Congress.

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) Tsaragi Ward 1 congress ended inconclusively amid disputes over alleged imposition of ward leaders by certain stakeholders. In a move that sparked widespread condemnation, the accused stakeholders affirmed the imposed leaders in a low-key ceremony.

Party members strongly condemned the action, perceiving it as "robbing them of their voice." The imposition and subsequent affirmation have been rejected in totality, with members calling for a more democratic and inclusive leadership selection process and threaten to take decisive actions if nothing is done to pleased the will of the majority members.

A member was quoted as saying, We can't be serving two masters from the same roof while we have others from other roof.

Gov Abdulrazaq commends bravery of Isin local vigilante, urges continuous firm action against criminals
▪︎ mourns death of vigilante member amid mass neutralisation of criminals
▪︎ Gov approves N10m support for family of slain vigilante, appeals for calm
▪︎ Heavy deployment awaited as Army extends Operation Fansan Yamma to Kwara

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Saturday commended the firm and patriotic resistance of the people of Isin, which resulted in the elimination of many armed criminals in an encounter at Eleyin community in Isin Local Government Area.

In a statement issued in Ilorin, the Governor said the community action against the criminals is consistent with their right to live without fear or intimidation at all times.

“In addition to our support for the security agencies, I assure our communities of continuous support to resist violent attacks. I, therefore, commend the bravery of the Isin and Irepodun vigilante who mounted a spirited resistance against the criminals," the statement said.

"I also send my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Saheed Adeshina, who succumbed to the injuries in the encounter. May God repose his soul. His family is assured of our prayers and support at this difficult moment."

Governor AbdulRazaq also approved a N10m financial support for the family of the dead vigilante, commending his bravery and commitment to the community.

The Governor said the reported mass neutralisation of the criminals is a bold statement that Kwarans will not accept further provocation.

“Not only will the government replace the motorcycles lost in the encounter, but it will also double down in its logistic support for the security forces and the local vigilantes across the state,” the statement added.

“As we mount this bold resistance in moral courage against criminality, I urge that we strike the right balance so that we do not further undermine our collective wellbeing, which violent protests may amount to. Together, we will ensure that our communities are rid of all criminal elements as security forces work with local vigilante to strengthen public safety.

"This collaboration will be further strengthened as the Nigerian Army has extended Operation Fansan Yamma to Kwara in furtherance of its national mandate to support internal security."

Criminals terrorising Nigerians better equipped than us – IGP

Kayode Egbetokun, Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, has acknowledged that criminals terrorising Nigerians across the country are ahead of security agencies in many ways. Egbetokun said the criminals are no longer “ragtag” gangs, noting that they are well-funded, heavily armed, internationally connected, and equipped with advanced technology.

Speaking at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Thursday during a meeting with commanders of border patrol units nationwide, the police chief urged officers to step up their operations. “Let me say this to you: when you mount a checkpoint, when you block a smuggling route, when you rescue a victim—you are not just doing your job; you are shaping the future of Nigeria.” He stressed that the nature of crime has changed drastically. “But let us be clear: the threats we face are changing every day. Criminal groups are no longer ragtag gangs. They are sophisticated, they are well-funded, and they are international.

They use drones, falsified documents, and encrypted networks to stay ahead. “We cannot fight 21st-century crime with 20th-century tools. That is why we must embrace technology, surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, real-time data analysis.

These are not luxuries; they are necessities. “And we will continue to fight for them until every officer on the frontline is equipped to match the sophistication of those you face.” The meeting later went into a closed-door session.

Egbetokun also highlighted Nigeria’s vulnerable borders, describing them as vast and complex, stretching over 4,000 kilometers of land boundaries and long maritime corridors linking the country to the Gulf of Guinea.

He explained that while borders represent channels of trade, culture, and human connection, they can also serve as entry points for threats. “For too long, the porosity of our borders has been exploited. We have seen the inflow of small arms and light weapons that fuel violence in our villages and cities. “We have seen contraband goods smuggled in, crippling our local industries.

We have seen vulnerable women and children deceived and trafficked across borders. “We have confronted terrorists and criminal syndicates who take advantage of these weaknesses to infiltrate and destabilize our communities.”

We belong to Allah and indeed, to Him we shall return," serves as a powerful reminder of the transient nature of life and the eternal truth of death. It encapsulates total submission to the will of Allah, especially in times of sorrow.

The passing of Hajia Aishat Abdulkadir, the beloved mother and devoted wife of Alhaji Abdulkadir Attahiru Nma-nko, has deeply saddened her family and community. Her Janazah prayer is scheduled for today at 10:30 AM at Alhaji Nma-nko's residence in the Zango area of Ilorin.

We pray that Allah forgives her shortcomings and grants her a place in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

PRESS RELEASE

NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE UPDATE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ON ITS ONGOING RECRUITMENT EXERCISE

1. The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is pleased to inform the general public on the progress of its ongoing recruitment exercise, which commenced with an official advertisement published in national newspapers on Friday, 27th December 2024. In line with its statutory mandate to strengthen manpower capacity and enhance service delivery, a total of 3,927 vacancies were declared across the Superintendent, Inspectorate, and Customs Assistant cadres.

2. The Service received a total of 573,523 applications during the first phase of the exercise. After a rigorous documentary scrutiny, 286,697 candidates were invited to proceed to the next phase. The second stage of the exercise, scheduled to take place from September 14th to 21st, 2025, will be conducted through an online Computer-Based Test (CBT), reflecting the Service’s commitment to transparency, accessibility, and fairness in the selection process.

3. Candidates shortlisted for the CBT are required to undertake the test at any location of their choice, provided there is reliable internet access. The exercise must, however, be conducted using a laptop or desktop computer equipped with a we**am and a full-screen display, as the application is not mobile phone-enabled. A facial verification process will be carried out during login; therefore, candidates are advised to maintain a neat appearance to avoid difficulties with recognition.

4. The CBT application is sensitive to noise and body movement. Accordingly, candidates must remain fully focused throughout the test's duration, as excessive movement, whispering, or background distractions may result in automatic logout by the system.
In the same vein, candidates are advised to avoid switching between windows during the test, as such actions will be flagged as malpractice and may lead to disqualification.

5. To further assist shortlisted applicants, the Service has made provisions for a mandatory pre-test exercise, which will be conducted two days before the actual CBT. This session will enable candidates to familiarise themselves with the application. In this regard, two separate links will be sent to all shortlisted applicants, one for the pre-test and another for the actual examination. Candidates who applied for the Superintendent Cadre (Level 8) should note that they will be invited for an additional CBT in the next phase of the recruitment exercise. This provision does not apply to the Inspectorate and Customs Assistant cadres.

6. The Nigeria Customs Service assures all stakeholders that the ongoing recruitment process remains strictly merit-driven and transparent. Successful candidates will be duly informed of subsequent phases of the exercise through the Service’s official communication channels, the details of which will be conveyed in due course. Applicants are strongly advised to adhere strictly to the issued guidelines and to rely solely on verified official platforms of the Service for authentic updates, as the NCS will neither request any form of payment nor conduct recruitment activities on social media platforms.
