Gum bleeding during tooth brushing in the second trimester of pregnancy is a common occurrence and is usually caused by pregnancy gingivitis. Here are the main reasons:
✅ 1. Hormonal Changes
Increased estrogen and progesterone levels during pregnancy increase blood flow to the gums.
This makes gums more sensitive, swollen, and prone to inflammation, leading to bleeding during brushing or flossing.
✅ 2. Pregnancy Gingivitis
Up to 60–75% of pregnant women experience this.
Characterized by red, tender, swollen, and bleeding gums.
Often worsens during the second trimester due to rising hormone levels.
✅ 3. Increased Blood Volume
Pregnancy increases blood volume, which can cause gums to become more vascular (filled with blood), making them easily irritated and more likely to bleed.
✅ 4. Poor Oral Hygiene
Nausea and vomiting (common in pregnancy) may cause some women to avoid brushing or flossing, leading to plaque buildup.
This can worsen gingivitis and increase bleeding risk.
✅ 5. Vitamin Deficiencies
Lack of Vitamin C (needed for gum health) may contribute to gum problems.
A balanced prenatal diet helps reduce this risk.
🩺 What to Do:
Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss gently but regularly.
Use antiseptic mouthwash (if approved by your doctor).
Visit a dentist or dental hygienist for a check-up and cleaning.
Ensure adequate intake of Vitamin C and calcium.
⚠️ When to See a Dentist
If bleeding is persistent, gums are very painful, or you notice loose teeth or pus, consult your dentist. These could be signs of more serious periodontal disease.
