With the way things are going now, it’s beginning to look like everyone is ganging up against Nyesom Wike.
The Nigeria Police Force has come out to condemn the actions of the police officers assigned to Wike. To be honest, those officers deserve to be disciplined — they displayed a high level of unprofessionalism in the line of duty.
You don’t just accompany your principal to forcefully claim 30 hectares of land; worse still, you go ahead to confront and fight a high-ranking military officer who was only performing his duty. That was completely out of order and highly embarrassing for the entire Force.
Like I’ve said before, the Nigeria Police Force has, on several occasions, shown more ignorance and lack of discipline in the course of duty than any other security agency in the country.
What the Nigeria Police Force needs right now is a total reorientation and retraining of its officers — not just in weapons handling or crime control, but in professional conduct, emotional intelligence, and respect for inter-agency hierarchy. They must understand that being armed doesn’t give them authority over every other uniformed man or civilian.
Until the police are properly reformed and their sense of discipline restored, incidents like this will continue to stain the image of the Force and erode public trust.
