BETTER LIVING CONDITIONS AHEAD, LASG PROMISES

By Lasisi Temitope

Better living conditions are the yearnings of most residents of the centre of excellence, Lagos, Nigeria.

Achieving this feat, the Lagos State Government under the administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a bid to make this happen and to reach out to all residents of the state under this democratic process and to plan ahead for the betterment of Lagosians in the year 2025 has staged a "budget consultative forum" across the five divisions of the state.

In Epe division, the event was held on Friday July 26 at the Epe Jubilee Chalet and it had in attendance various traditional rulers of the division, market men and women, artisans, youths, top government functionaries, educationists and host of others.

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Temitope Ope George stated that the aim of the Lagos State Government on the annual budget consultative forum is to meet with the citizens to discuss developmental requests and issues affecting them in their various areas.

He also pointed out some updates on the implementation status of completed and ongoing projects and programs outlined in the 2024 budget.

He further assured that;

“The state government is doing everything possible to see that all residents have the minds of hope and trust in the communal development”

“The Governor and his team will continue to provide better opportunities for the citizens and residents of Lagos state”

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Olalekan Hafeez Balogun in his speech said;

" This august gathering is in preparation for the Year 2025 Budget hosted by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget”

"This forum has always charged itself to reach out to the five divisions in Lagos State so that inputs of all stakeholders are taken into consideration in the State’s Budget preparation process to further ensure transparency, accountability, inclusion, effective representation and acceptability of the Budget”.

"As an indigene of the Epetedo area of Lagos Island & a resident of Apapa, today’s edition being the first for this year is very special and personal to me”

"As a Government, our commitment to the wellbeing of citizens and residents of Lagos, as well as the growth of our state is resolute and unwavering”.

"We shall remain dedicated to the successful completion of on-going projects, implementation of pivotal and iconic ones that will make our infrastructure robust and resilient, thereby creating economic opportunities for all residents" He assured

The SA to the Governor further stated that the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu will continue to ensure that Lagos state remains a beacon of cultural vibrancy, intellectual prowess, and humanistic values; a Lagos that not only drives the economic engine of Nigeria but also enriches the soul of the West African corridor.

In his words

“Our philosophy remains that for democracy to maintain its essence, citizens’ engagement with the Government must be encouraged and indeed deliberately courted”

"This is evident in our State’s slogan of ‘Ajumose’ which literally means ‘joint effort’. It has been this guiding principle that led to the movement of 1 State consultative forum to 3 Senatorial districts and now coming down to each of the 5 IBILE divisions of our great State”.

"This gives the people a voice to have a say in the State budget preparation, while also holding the Government accountable to deliver on projects agreed upon”.

"While strengthening our resolve on “All-inclusive Governance” and reinforcing it with the ‘No One Must Be Left Behind’ maxim, either on account of their social status, gender or age; this administration will focus on policies and programs that will ensure that everyone is carried along and catered for.

"Thus, the main reason why the State has always adhered to proper consultation and due diligence especially in decision making processes, while also creating an avenue to update stakeholders on the half year performance of the budget, the resources available for the annual budget, taking into cognizance all economic variables such as the global and local inflation and much more”.

"Most importantly, this forum provides us with an ample opportunity to share ideas geared towards a “Greater Lagos”, while rubbing minds with you, the citizens to ensure that your desired interests are captured in the budget as resources available permits" he reiterated

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat who responded to some of the royal fathers and residents requests through a zoom stated that the government of Babajide Sanwo-Olu is leaving no stone unturned on the well-being of all residents of the state while assuring that all requests would be put into consideration

He said;

“We are poised as a government to support individuals in achieving greatness together in the state”

“We assure you of good governance and more dividends of democracy in the nearest future”.

The HRM Oba Owolabi Saheed Mompson, the Abowa of Agbowa Ikosi, Ikosi-Ejirin LCDA said;

“It shows that the present government is very proactive and responsive to the yearnings and cries of the people”

“Though, the state government is trying its best to maintain peace and order in the state, but much needed to be done in areas such as; security, food safety, electricity, road management and maintenance”

Some other residents have also registered their cases for better care services and good democratic policies for all to live well in the state.

By Temitope Lasisi

The Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA yet again distributed foods to the people at the grassroots to alleviate some of their sufferings in this harsh situation.

All the five wards in the local council benefited from the gesture.

It would be recalled that the state government gave this directives to all the LGs and LCDAs in the state and Eredo has not in any way relented in this regards.

The government at all levels are not resting on their oars in bringing lasting solution to the present situation in the country.

The council chairman, Eredo LCDA, Hon. Monsuru Akinloye while addressing the gathering commended the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for rolling our food relief packages to the people across the state to cushion the current hardship.

Adding that the distribution of the palliatives is for all residents of the area without any bias.

He said;

“We have arranged things (raw rice and beans) to go round all and sundry"

"Let me assure you that the federal, state and local governments are not leaving any stone unturned in seeing that this country is a better place for us to live in”.

"Let's all exercise patient and cooperate with the government as the hardships will soon be things of the past" he assured.

“The Executive Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu must be appreciated and thanked for this laudable project”

“He is a man of honour and grace. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without his effort and support”.

“More of these measures are still coming in the nearest future”

In a similar way, just few weeks ago, the chairman disbursed twenty million naira (N20,000,000) to one thousand (1000) people of his LCDA as palliatives to further relief the hardship off the people.

“May God continue to be with them and their family members”.

Mr. Emmanuel Olatunji Oshilade from Noforija also expressed his gratitude to the Governor and the Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA.

He said;

“My unreserved appreciation goes to the Governor of the state, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for keeping to his promises”

“Our son and chairman of the LCDA is also very important to be appreciated. He has the leadership qualities to administer over the local council”.

“My prayers are that they will live long to witness more of good things to come”

Meanwhile, in a notable directive, Governor Sanwoolu has emphasized that no council chairman should seek personal recognition for the initiative. Instead, all praise and acknowledgment should be directed towards the state governor, emphasizing the collective effort of the government in responding to the needs of the people.

This directive highlights Governor Sanwoolu's dedication to inclusive governance and the equitable distribution of resources, ensuring that the relief reaches those people in need without political biases.

As preparations for the programme intensify, Governor Sanwoolu urges residents to remain vigilant and cooperative. By fostering a spirit of unity and solidarity, Lagosians can work together to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic and build a stronger, more resilient community.

Through sustained collaboration and mutual support, the state can navigate these uncertain times and emerge stronger, paving the way for a brighter future for all its inhabitants.
