Meta will lay off 10% of its workforce, equating to about 8,000 employees, as it continues investing heavily into artificial intelligence, the company confirmed on Thursday.

The social media giant will initiate the job cuts on May 20, and is scrapping plans to hire people for 6,000 open roles, according to a Thursday memo to employees that Bloomberg News first reported on.

Meta plans to lay off 10% of its workforce, about 8,000 employees, as the company continues to ramp up investments in artificial intelligence.

Amazon stock jumped 3% after it doubled down on its AI bet by agreeing to pump up to $25 billion more into Anthropic, the startup behind everyone’s favorite AI assistant, Claude.

That’s on top of the $8 billion already on the table.

The deal isn’t one-sided though. Anthropic is returning the favor in a big way, pledging to drop $100 billion on Amazon Web Services over the next decade.

Translation? Two tech titans just shook hands on a $133 billion relationship — and Wall Street loved it.
