Nigeria’s non-oil exports have risen by 25.75 per cent to $1.79 billion in the first quarter of 2025 as sesame seed exports attract global market. The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, disclosed this in an event for sesame seed farmers on Thursday.

Ayeni, representing Chika Sylvia, Chief Trade Promotion Officer of the council, said the increase represents 25.75 compared to 19.59 per cent for the first quarter of 2024. She noted that in 2024, sesame seed ranked number three out of the top 20 export products, amounting to 337.8258 metric tonnes with 4.63 per cent of the quantity exported.

The naira appreciated significantly against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market after Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary holiday on Thursday. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the naira strengthened to N1,455.24 on Thursday, up from N1,475.35 traded on Tuesday.

This means that the naira gained N20.11 against the dollar on Thursday compared to the N1,475.35 exchanged at the close of trading before Wednesday’s holiday. Similarly, at the black market, the naira firmed by N5 to N1,485 on Thursday from N1,490 on Tuesday.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, says the brief nationwide strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, led to a significant drop in oil and gas production in Nigeria.

The NNPCL also revealed that crude oil output recorded a reduction of about 283,000 barrels per day, roughly 16% of national output, and a reduction of 1.7 billion standard cubic feet per day in gas output, while knocking out more than 1,200 megawatts of power generation.

The North-Central All Progressives Congress, APC, Forum has urged President Bola Tinubu and members of the National Assembly to reject calls for creation of state police in the country. The Forum, comprising APC stakeholders in the North-Central region, made the plea in response to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang’s recent call for creation of state police.

Mutfwang had, while speaking at a special court session organized to mark the commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year in Jos, declared that the time for state police has come. The governor urged the President and members of the National Assembly to support the actualization of state police, saying it will help to address insecurity in Plateau and other parts of the country.

Chairman of the Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, stated this on Thursday in Abuja when he hosted Barry Andrews, Head of the European Union, EU, election observation follow-up mission to Nigeria.
