Title: When Autumn Came
Chapter 1: A Coffee-Stained Beginning
Rain drizzled lightly on the glass window of the quaint café nestled in a quiet corner of Shanghai. It was one of those mid-autumn mornings when the world moved slower, the air smelled of wet leaves, and people wrapped their hearts in layers of wool and silence.
Mei Lin sat at a corner table, nursing her lukewarm latte as she stared blankly at the blinking cursor on her laptop. The words for her next magazine column refused to come, and the deadline loomed like a storm cloud over her head. She tugged her cardigan tighter and exhaled sharply, annoyed at both the blank page and her uncooperative muse.
A sudden gust of wind pushed open the café door, sending a chime ringing through the quiet space. Mei Lin glanced up—out of habit more than interest—and saw a man enter, shaking droplets of rain off his umbrella. He was tall, dressed in a tailored navy coat, and had that effortless air of someone who never quite belonged in one place.
He ordered a black coffee and scanned the café for a seat. Every table was occupied—except the one across from Mei Lin.
“Mind if I sit?” His voice was smooth, with a hint of warmth.
Mei Lin hesitated. She was used to being alone, to her space being hers and hers alone. But something in his expression—calm, open, tired—made her nod.
“Sure,” she said, pushing aside a stack of notes.
He smiled and sat down, placing his coffee cup on the table carefully, like it mattered more than it should.
For the next ten minutes, neither of them spoke. Mei Lin tapped at her keyboard, producing fragmented sentences and half-formed thoughts. The man pulled out a notebook—an actual leather-bound one—and started sketching. She tried not to look, but her curiosity won.
“You draw?”
He looked up, surprised. “Not well. I’m an architect. Sketching helps me think.”
Mei Lin blinked. “I write. Sort of.”
“Sort of?”
