JUST IN: The Federal Government has launched a dedicated security outfit, Coastal Highway Guards, to protect the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway from vandalism, theft and other unauthorised activities.
Minister of Works David Umahi inaugurated the initiative with an initial deployment of 40 officers, who will maintain security presence along the highway, monitor suspicious activities, report vandalism and prevent hawking, loitering, motorcycles and tricycles from operating on the road.
According to the government, the team will be led by retired General Adekunle Shodunke and will work alongside other security agencies.
Umahi stressed that the assignment is not an empowerment programme but a full-time job aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure.
The minister expressed concern over reports of people removing construction materials, damaging fences, stealing rods and occupying sections of the highway, saying such activities must stop.
He also revealed that during a late-night inspection of the project, officials found people sleeping on parts of the highway, describing the situation as unacceptable.
The 750-kilometre, 10-lane Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of Nigeria’s largest road projects and is designed to connect Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. It is being constructed by Hitech Construction Company Limited under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works.
