Habemus Papam: Leo XIV Elected as New Pope

In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel's chimney on May 8, 2025, signaling the election of a new pope. Cardinal Robert Prevost, a Chicago-born Augustinian friar, has been chosen as the 267th successor to St. Peter, taking the papal name Leo XIV. He became the first American pope in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.

The new pope is expected to join the cardinals for a special celebration at the Vatican guesthouse and deliver his first major public event, the Sunday Angelus, on May 11 from the window of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace. A potential trip to Turkey at the end of May to celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea is also on the horizon.

Lagos Traffic Chaos: Sanwo-Olu Apologizes for Gridlock, Cites Bridge Repair Necessity

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued an apology to Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced yesterday and this morning. The governor attributed the chaos to the ongoing repair works on a critical bridge, which was undertaken to prevent a potential disaster.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the decision to repair the bridge, handled by Messrs Buildwell construction, had been in the works for over three years. The governor emphasized that the repair works were essential to ensuring the safety and stability of the bridge infrastructure.

The traffic situation in Lagos has been a recurring challenge, with the recent closure of the Independence Bridge (Marina bound) for extensive maintenance and rehabilitation works exacerbating the issue. The 14-month closure, which began on April 1, 2024, has diverted traffic to alternative routes, leading to increased congestion and frustration among commuters.

Sanwo-Olu's apology comes as a response to the public's outcry over the traffic situation, with many Lagos residents taking to social media to express their frustration. The governor's acknowledgment of the challenges faced by commuters and his explanation of the necessity of the bridge repair works aim to alleviate tensions and reassure Lagosians that the government is working to address the issue.

Supreme Court Sacks Abure as Labour Party Chairman

In a dramatic turn of events, the Supreme Court has set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). This ruling effectively sacks Abure from his position as the party's chairman.

The Supreme Court's decision is a significant development in the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party. The party has been embroiled in a bitter dispute over its leadership, with Abure and another faction vying for control.

The implications of this ruling are far-reaching, and it remains to be seen how the party will respond to the Supreme Court's decision. One thing is certain, however: the Labour Party's leadership crisis is far from over

Akpabio Fires Back: "Assassination Claims by Senator Natasha are Baseless and Malicious"

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has vehemently denied allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, claiming that he plotted to assassinate her. Akpabio's office described the accusation as "false, malicious, and inflammatory," stating that it's a deliberate attempt to incite public unrest and damage the Senate President's reputation.

According to Akpabio's media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, the senator's claim is part of a recurring pattern of misinformation and defamation. Eyiboh recalled that Akpoti-Uduaghan had previously accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim she later abandoned without explanation.

The controversy began when Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio conspired with former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to have her assassinated in Kogi State. However, the Kogi State Government has denied the claim, calling it "reckless, malicious, and entirely false".

Akpabio's office has initiated legal action against Akpoti-Uduaghan, demanding a public retraction, apology, and compensation for reputational harm. The Senate President remains committed to his duties, emphasizing that he will not be distracted by malicious falsehoods or inflammatory rhetoric.

Burkina Faso's President Ibrahim Traore Survives Another Assassination Attempt Amid Growing Instability

In a daring attack, President Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso has survived another assassination attempt, marking the latest incident in a series of violent attacks on his leadership. The attempt on Traore's life occurred late Wednesday in the capital, Ouagadougou, when unidentified assailants ambushed the presidential convoy with heavy gunfire and explosives.

Although Traore, 35, was unharmed, several security personnel were injured in the assault. The attackers fled the scene, leaving behind significant destruction, but have not yet been captured. Government officials swiftly condemned the attempt as a terrorist act aimed at destabilizing Burkina Faso.

This latest assassination attempt underscores the fragile security landscape Traore is navigating. Burkina Faso has been grappling with increasing instability since 2015, driven by insurgencies linked to extremist groups like Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, which have ravaged its northern and eastern regions.

Traore, a young military officer who took power in September 2022 after ousting former President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, promised to restore security and defend Burkina Faso's sovereignty. However, the ongoing insurgent violence presents a formidable challenge to his leadership.

The international community has expressed alarm over the attack. Both the African Union and the United Nations have called for calm, urging all factions in Burkina Faso to engage in dialogue to address the country's complex political and security crises

Kogi Government Reports Senator Natasha to Security Agencies Over Homecoming Rally

The Kogi State Government has taken a strong stance against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, reporting her to security agencies for allegedly inciting violence and causing unnecessary tension. This move comes after the senator held a homecoming rally in the Ihima community of Okehi Local Government Area, despite a government ban on political gatherings.

Commissioner for Information Kingsley Fanwo accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of deliberately violating the ban, which was put in place to maintain security and prevent breaches of peace. Fanwo stated that the senator should be held accountable for her actions, which he claimed were attempts to provoke unrest in Kogi Central.

Despite the restriction, Akpoti-Uduaghan received a massive welcome from supporters and residents of the Ihima community. Crowds from the five LGAs of Kogi Central had gathered as early as 8 am to receive the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker, who arrived in a helicopter.

The Kogi State Government has warned that Akpoti-Uduaghan will be held responsible if any violence erupts in the state following her rally. The government has also called on security agencies to take note of the senator's actions, which they claim pose a serious threat to peace and stability in the state
