Tensions are rising in South African homes as unemployment and household financial pressure worsen.

South Africa has formally asked Nigeria, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to reimburse part of the costs it incurred while repatriating their nationals. In a briefing to Parliament, the Home Affairs Department said it had spent nearly $18 million on housing and transporting migrants who requested to return home. According to reports from the Associated Press, the steep bill covered bus transport, temporary repatriation facilities, staff overtime, food and other operational expenses. Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode noted that although the affected countries assisted in some aspects of the repatriation process, South Africa ultimately shouldered the bulk of the financial burden, prompting the government's latest move to seek cost recovery.
