“I am pregnant! I am pregnant!!”

I turned to see the person announcing her pregnancy status on the streets of Lagos.

“Yes now, since you are looking at my big tummy, I have to tell you that I am pregnant.”

Oh! She was actually talking to me? When? How? Did I even look at her?

She walked past me and entered a building. I still didn’t see the tummy she was talking about.

I didn’t say anything to her, but I understood her.

You know how you think something is wrong with you, and when you walk on the street, it’s as if everyone is looking at you because of whatever it is you think is wrong?

It has happened to me before. I wore a faded black trouser, and I felt so many eyes were on it.

The truth is, you are only seeing them in your mind, not with your eyes. No one is looking at you.

Everyone is busy with their own lives. They don’t think about you as much as you think they do.

Get busy with your own life too.

“You can’t let her be at peace like this. Have you forgotten the implications?” he questions his assistants, anger dripping from every word.

“So you want her to see, hear, know, and do? Don’t you realize the damage that would cause us? Do you want our labor over her all these years to be in vain?” His attempt to control his vexation slips away.

“She must remain at war in her mind. Don’t give her space to find clarity or align with what is written for her. There should be no end to the conflict in her thoughts. Find something to give, anything, as long as it keeps her mind restless,” he growls, as if ready to pounce.

He howls and roams, roaring and barking. His desire is simple: “May she never concentrate, may she never be still, may her desires never be specific.”

What they don’t know is that she is no longer ignorant. She has uncovered their devices. She stands where they never wanted her to be—the place of peace and quietness. The place that allows one to sleep in the midst of a storm. The place where creativity flows freely. The place of understanding. The place where one is rooted and grounded in love.

Your concentration was stolen.

Now you drift here and there,

Yet somehow, you are nowhere.

You spend more time on trivial tasks,

Doing much but achieving little—

But it hasn’t always been this way.

Social media intervened,

Now your mind can’t find stillness.

You chase after distractions,

Trying to catch up from every corner.

When was the last time

You gave your full attention to a task?

Can you read or listen for an hour,

Without wandering off?

Have you tried to simply be,

To stay still and do nothing?

No, you can’t.

For as soon as you begin,

Thoughts of messages to reply to,

Trends to chase, flood your mind.

Concentration beckons you.

“Come, my child, and be still.

Focus on one thing at a time.”
