THE MAN I WAS TOO BLIND TO LOVE
Amariya danced barefoot, on long gown spinning around her as everyone clapped and cheered. She laughed. For one brief moment, she was free.
Then—
A horse charged toward her.
Amariya froze.
The rider pulled the reins too late.
She dropped beneath the horse’s path and ran.
The rider turned and chased after her.
“AMARIYA! STOP!”
She ran deeper into the woods.
“I’LL LET YOU GO!”
She finally stopped.
Breathing heavily, she turned.
“Why should I believe you?”
The rider lowered his voice.
“Your mother is sick.”
Amariya’s face changed.
He took her home.
Her mother lay weakly on the bed.
Amariya fell beside her.
“I’m sorry I left you, Mama.”
Her mother smiled through tears.
“Gig helped me.”
Amariya looked toward him.
“Your husband is a good man.”
“Please, Mama. I don’t love him.”
Her mother reached for her hand.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
Then she whispered:
“Gig promised me he would set you free.”
Amariya froze.
Before she could respond, her mother’s eyes closed.
That night, they buried her.
Amariya cried against Gig’s shoulder.
Later, she fell asleep.
Gig sat alone nearby, watching her.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I love you so much…”
He looked away.
“But I promised to let you go.”
Before dawn, Amariya quietly left.
She ran through the countryside with a smile on her face.
She had finally escaped.
She reached Malik’s house.
She opened the door.
Then stopped.
Malik was in bed with Lani.
And Lani was heavily pregnant.
The cup in Amariya’s hand fell.
Malik woke.
“Amariya…”
She ran.
Malik chased her into the woods.
“Stop! Please!”
She turned on him.
“Explain!”
He tried to approach.
“Amariya—”
“Explain how my best friend is carrying your child!”
Silence.
She was crying now.
“I left for three months because I was trying to escape my marriage…”
She shook her head.
“…while you were sleeping with Lani.”
Malik lowered his eyes.
“We were already together before you married Gig.”
Her face broke.
“Did you ever love me?”
Malik looked at her.
“I did.”
“I always will.”
“But Lani knows me better.”
Amariya walked away crying.
She returned home.
“Gig?”
Silence.
His clothes were gone.
On the table was a small note.
GOODBYE, AMARIYA.
“No…”
She ran.
At the river, she saw a small boat pulling away.
“GIG!”
He turned.
“Why are you here?”
Amariya fell to her knees.
“I was a fool.”
She wiped her tears.
“I thought I loved Malik.”
“I was wrong.”
Gig said nothing.
“Malik never loved me the way I thought he did.”
She looked at him.
“But you…”
Her voice broke.
“You were kind to me when I gave you nothing.”
She stood.
“I don’t know if I love you yet.”
“But I want to learn.”
Gig looked away.
“It’s too late.”
He turned the boat.
Amariya collapsed beside the river, crying.
Then a hand reached down.
She looked up.
Gig.
“If you really want me…”
He held out his hand.
“…come with me.”
“Leave this town.”
“Start again.”
Amariya stared at him.
Then grabbed his hand.
She jumped into the boat.
Gig looked at her in disbelief.
“Aren’t you coming?”
He laughed.
For the first time, she laughed too.
They sailed into the sunrise.
CUT TO BLACK.
FINAL LINE
Sometimes we don’t realize someone’s worth until we’ve lost everything else.
