In The Light Of Truth: Rots And Decadence In The Nigeria Police And Its Repercussions To The Society. Who Will Change The Narratives.
By Yamah Abdulateef
The Nigeria Police in recent times have been a subject of ridicule, from it's mode of operations, attitude, behaviors and it's relationship with the people, there seems to be a whole lot existing the weaknesses of the force in all fronts With the facts that, the force cannot be detached from the happenings of the what is going on in the country, as a lot is yet to be unravelled in the force.
A p***c institution like the police, established to protect lives and properties is on the other way round enmeshed in wrong doings against the state and you wonder what had changed in the one if the best in Africa. Lest we forget, the force had produced one of the finest in men and women that had stood against and defend the country against internal crimes that had happened in the past.
In the 80s when "Anini the law" was terrorising Benin city in the old Bendel state, the Nigeria Police rose in action to bring Anini to it's knee, with the likes of Chris Omeben leading the charge. Since then, bribery, corruption, nepotism and indiscipline had taken over the once revered crime fighting outfit in Nigeria.
The level of unprofessionalism brings to mind which model is the police patterened, as the metropolitan police in the UK ensure that the home land security is safe and with high level of commitment to service. Which brings to question, how committed is the Nigeria Police Force and how insulated they are from crime.
With several indictments around it, the people have lost trust in them, as their agenda to always be the first to dehumanize, kill innocent and defendles Nigerians and trample upon the people's human rights in a gestapo manner, while asking them to go to hell.
Though, not a surprise as even the process bringing in recruits into the force seems to be faulty as even those training the newly intakes and the facilities used in training them seem to be archaic, while the seed of discord is sowed into them to see Nigerians as their enemies, whereas, the weapon fashioned against them is their hierarchy that ensures that their barracks are unkept, police stations are like pig houses, rickety vehicles, with high targets demand from their oga at the top. All these are major issues not addressed, with the usuals of always defending the few, carrying their bags, illegal road blocks and scrambling to be orderlies to political exposed persons and mighty I'm the society, brings their credibility to function as law keepers to book.
At this point, it shows that the job is centred around forces and chain of command that can't check excesses of men and women, rather, show of force and power within, has further deepened their core values, without strong will to deal with the whole, but a few. As quick as they are, in framing up victims, the police have been complicit in most cases, as we have in accidental discharge, unlawful arrests and killings. Who answers for the appo killing in Abuja, what about the death of Chief Bola Ige, where all his security details were said to have gone to eat at the same time before his untimely death.
This non absence of proper checks and balances as a result of wranglings between the IGP and the chairman of the Police Service Commission that has a former IGP as it's chairman is a major reason for this. With the government knowing, why not seek help outside to reposition the police force, by bringing in a seasoned administrator to reposition, sanitize, rehabilitate, train and refocuse their attention to community policing which is the yearning of the people. Nigerians saw this with the customs, as Col. Hameed Ali Rtd. was appointed as Custom's Comptroller General and heaven did not fall but, repositioned it without stress.
Now that the chicken has come home to roost, how can the Police clear their battered image that is showing everywhere, how can they restore their lost glory. Just recently, men of the Nigeria Police where seen lined up, receiving money from a Chinese based in Nigeria and that alone is a testament to the stench oozing out of the Nigeria Police which they can't deny. We now ask them where the best practices they preach is.
The governments before now and the present one can't deny that the Police as an institution is in a mess, but how did they treat the issues, problems and the consequences, if any, but It all rolled over with the status quo remaining and the people disenchanted with their activities and operations. As they are perceived as liers, killers and never to be trusted institution.
Also, their involvement in some organized chaos is one hate the people have for them as they happened to be chief instigation of crisis and don't believe in fair hearing but intimidation which saw them loose respect in the eyes of the law and the people.
Now that Nigeria is even under policed and few ones available are underutilized and the one utilized are for the wrong reasons, it is right for national policing and state policing be taken seriously, coupled with strong stance on discipline and welfare. The human angle be brought back to the police because their violations of human rights is more than the ones they are meant to preserve and protect. With their slogan that bail is free and the police is your friend, which are never true, there is every means for those in authority to take proper monitoring of the police seriously with appropriate sanctioning at any point in time, with a renewed vigour to bring back standard practice.
The innocent people the police have thrown behind bars is more than the criminals that have been let loose. Imagine, having a crime scene without thorough investigation, but every body within and from afar, are picked up unchallenged, just to prove a point. All these negates standard practice of policing, reason being that, the authority have failed to do the needful in correcting deviations in the areas of crime and internal security.
Now that the police has lost it's commanding respect, urgent moves by the government should be placed on their funding, recruitment, welfare and general operations because the police look like demigods and this has to stop to ensure that public trust returns to the police. This will aid the police community relations and people will volunteer information to them, because, as it is right now, even the police are suspects of revealing and selling out information to the public, thereby betraying the trust and believe of the people as information management has been breached.
In this regard, responsible men and women be given the responsibility to be at the top echelon of the institution to bring back the professionalism the police is known for, as this will bring about a more approachable police with a human face.
