MASJID OF THE WEEK- AL-JABBAR GRAND MOSQUE (MASJID RAYA AL JABBAR), BANDUNG, WEST JAVA, INDONESIA.
The Al-Jabbar Grand Mosque (Masjid Raya Al-Jabbar), is a striking, monumental landmark renowned for its neo-futuristic architecture and unique setting. The mosque is built on the edge of a large man-made retention lake (the Gedebage retention basin) spanning over 6 to 7 hectares. Because it sits directly on the water, the structure creates stunning visual reflections and appears to “float” on the surface, particularly when viewed at sunrise, sunset, or during the blue hour. The mosque was designed by Mochammad Ridwan Kamil (an architect and former Governor of West Java). The main prayer building measures 99 by 99 meters, a deliberate choice symbolizing the Asmaul Husna—the 99 names of Allah in Islam. Designed to accommodate massive crowds, the complex can hold up to 33,000 to 50,000 worshippers across its indoor prayer spaces, mezzanines, and surrounding courtyards. The vast interior features a massive, column-free prayer hall covered with plush Turkish-woven carpets.
There are 27 entry points to the complex, each decorated with a distinct batik motif representing one of the 27 cities and regencies of the West Java province. The lower ground floor houses an extensive, modern educational multimedia museum detailing the history of the Prophet Muhammad and the historical spread of Islam, particularly focusing on its arrival in Indonesia. Spanning a total land area of roughly 26 hectares, the complex includes landscaped grounds, educational thematic gardens centered around prophets, and public recreational spaces that draw thousands of visitors daily for religious tourism, education, and community gatherings.
